1/4 mile away with the DA* 300 that does not like tracking over water or open sky.

Love the woody shots, frustrating things to try and capture.
We have those and a couple of the lesser woodpeckers that will visit and harass our suet feeders, the Flickers have zero fear and even less cares unless you are trying to take a picture.

I've caught bigger, easy three times that size which puts those at 150+ ft.
But still if they are that massive being shot 1/4 to a 1/2 mile away it just means that monsters are among us. Without tweaking the contrast and colors a bit they would just be grey and white washed with little to no detail.
All the wave shots of mine are handheld, the winds during those storms and tides are surreal. Both shots in the multi string just one is tweaked color wise.
Handheld, 65 sustained winds 85 gusts, high tide during the recent bomb cyclone. Was not a chance I was going to mono or tripod it and have several thousand dollars of gear turn into a Pentax debris rocket. Already lost the door to my PLM shroud in a gale and almost lost the camera due to the winds.
Top shot for the sizing of it those rock formations are 150' above sea level at high tide at the tallest point.

The lockdowns threw a giant ugly monkey wrench into our plans here also, why so many of my photos as of late are one of four places ad nauseam. It does make it difficult to motivate to grab the camera and go, or just what is out the front door. ---------- Post added 02-16-21 at 09:50 AM ----------
The extended battery and grip also help.

KP with the trusty PLM due to water resistant.
Barview jetty recent King tide with a storm surge, normally that area is sand and beach but is under about 65' of wave on the back flow.

Be prepared for people to think you are rocking a film full frame and what to yap about it while you are trying to shoot, well if you are using a shorter lens.
Had more than a few people blow my shots wanting to talk about the Pentax right as I am pushing the button, kind of like when people cough or talk when a golfer is releasing the swing. I have given up trying to take beach night shots around here during tourist season.

Nah a bit more drama and shows the contrast well with the feathers.

2nd one.
Because the birds are quite dark, also less of the ripple effect distracting from the bird.
IMHO.

Been trying to bring these guys to the yard for weeks.
Changed feeder and changed up the feed, they have been swarming this morning.
While not the most clear on the noise front I cranked the shutter speed up to get the wings clearly. Not sure which of three species of hummers that are in the area but happy none the less.

HA I felt the same way when I got my KP with a PLM.
Then it hit that birding is actually kind of enjoyable when you get that shot of something that just fidgets around all the time, you have to be lucky or quick or quick and lucky. Been trying to get a shot of the Anna's and Calliope hummingbirds around here, or even the several pairs of bald eagles but they all seem to know when I have or don't have my camera.

A few from the recent King tide on the Oregon coast.
Oh and that tower is like 50 feet tall those rocks are a jetty top.
Wind was so bad it blew off my shroud's CP gate. Not a chance in hell I was going after it.
