Well, it took me a while to compose my multiple shot's into 1, but here it is. Ended up learning a lot of Gimp along the way. @Weevil, I really like your shot.

Nice shot! We'll have to wait for these birds to migrate back in spring, but you are getting me pumped up to head out this come spring.

Such nice focus! Looks like your depth of field isn't more than a mm. Do you focus using the view finder or on the screen?

I like this shot. I often try to look for patterns in nature when I'm out hiking, and I like convoluted web you've got. I agree with jcdoss in what he suggests and would add maybe wetting the roots with water to make them a little darker

Nice pic! I especially like how the background blue compliments the slightly yellow coat on the animals. And I agree with Fdooch, an out of focus foreground would not harm the picture, but it's still good with the vignetting you've put in.

Your pictures remind me of a picture I once saw of small icicle with a drop of water. Maybe 50% of frame was filled with the small icicle and water drop. What made the picture interesting is that drop acted like a crystal ball where you could just make out the fact that the icicle was close to a pool of water, and there was ice around pool. Simple composition, but the context was still there.
Keep shooting!

Are there any particular compositional elements you try with your shots? How do you capture cold, dreary, quiete, calm in a scene like this?

I like the 3 Bobcats we've got. They do a good job of keeping the jackrabbit population under control, not to mention driving the magpies crazy.

I agree. I was already using a telephoto lens and sharp branches in front of the rocks you see so getting closer was a challenge. Still, the suggestions above are helpful to see other possibilities. Thanks!

Fooling around a bit more, I made a BW image. I think the BW image works better since the coloured rock is rendered more muted.

Just had some fun taking a quick shot of Neighborhood bobcat. I didn't have time to set up a tripod, but just being introduced to the green button on my pentax, I was able to get this shot. Nice to keep the camera around for those times when you need it quick.

Agreed, as Ansel Adams said "A good photograph is knowing where to stand"; or in this case where to lie down :)

Oh it's always possible! It's simply a matter of risk 😜. I remember a professional photographer suggesting that you take a minute to consider what drew you to the scene, then fill the frame with it.
In this scene I now see that I was over thinking it. Not having as much color appealed to me because the feeling of autumn is a bit more solemn. I liked the harshness of contrast between dark rocks and the water. It evokes a sence of harshness in the that is too come. I also liked the thin layer of ice around the rocks.
So I made the mistake of trying to do to much with the image.
Thanks to all for for your suggestions, the conversation really helps.
