I use the Nokton 58/1.4 on my K-3 with no issues; granted, I wish I had focus-peaking in the viewfinder on the K-3....

I cannot agree more.
The VL58mm is a true gem. The VL58mm is very sturdy and perfect for harsh outdoor conditions. The IQ is superb. While I tend to prefer usually the IQ of the FA31mm Ltd and FA77mm Ltd, the VL58mm is extra-ordinary (IMHO) in poor lighting conditions: e.g., fog, smoke, smog. In these conditions, I prefer the VL58mm to my Limited lenses (and that says a lot IMHO). Lastly the VL58mm is superior to the FA Ltd and DA Ltd in very-very-low light when the AF does not lock. The MF ring of the VL58mm is very smooth and easy to use.Although a FF lens, I have used the VL58mm with a K-7, K-01, K-3 and K-3iii and it is fantastic with each camera body.
My 5 cents....

It's also worth remembering that focus confirmation doesn't appear at just one precise spot... there'll be a small range of focus movement throughout which you'll get the confirmation indicator and beep, and with a 50mm f/1.4 lens, either end of that range could produce slightly out-of-focus images. A technique that works for me is to find the limits by rocking the focus ring back and forth then moving it to a position half way between those limits. It takes a bit of practice, but you'll get there...

Maybe or maybe not.

One thing that may be causing your issue is Focus Shift. This usually only applies to fast lenses when stopped down. If you are seeing the softness at f1.4 then it is not going to be focus shift.

The focus confirmation may need calibrating as it relies on the AF system to beep/green hexagon. You can do this for manual lenses via the AF/FA menu APPLY ALL setting.

Do you notice any focus errors (FF/BF) with any autofocus lenses ?

Confirmation is surely the best way. From your experience, what is the cause of other brands not having a reliable focus peaking?? Is it that inaccurate?

Partly yes. DSLRs have 2 AF systems: phase detect AF for the optical viewfinder and contrast detect AF via the sensor when using LV.
Mirrorless cameras only use contrast detection (as far as I am aware).

They still could implement a beep signal and a red box though.

Phase detect AF with MF lenses only works with the centre AF point though

To add to this, you can also use the AF/FA menu (in APPLY ALL mode), to adjust for any tolerance needed.

Pentax 43 > Pentax DFA SDM AW 50mm*

It's highly subjective, of course. I would say the DFA50 is technically better, but the 43 has more character, and I enjoy using it (and carrying it) more.

That's subjective, and I disagree. The 43 has character, the 50 is technically superior.

That's marginal.

I agree, but not to a huge extent.

That is the best way to put it.

The 50 is a superior tool, but the 43 fits me like a glove, plus its small size means it gets used more than the 50 would.

The discussion reminds me of what made one photographer choose between his Rolleiflex with Tessar lens and the one with the Planar: the former for portraits, the latter for architecture and landscape. The former has a pleasant rendering and is softer, the latter is sharper.

I've been debating getting back to Pentax and the 43 or 31 are top on my list. The 31 is a bit harder to justify due to the price.

I don't own the HD 50 but I did rent it. Its an incredible lens but I'll agree that the 43 is better, to my taste. All talk of rendering is subjective and there are no rights and wrongs concerning such things but I prefer the way images come out with the 43. Just a perfect combination of very nice resolution with a, I dont really want to say, softness about the lines and edges. In prints it simply creates an image that pulls you in like nestling into a warm blanket when you're sick. I could be wrong, though

From the images I've seen (I don't own either), both lenses perform admirably.
I agree entirely that the 43 has a character x-factor to it while the 50 is almost more clinical (like a marco lens).
However, both produce excellent images!

I have never used the DFA 50 mm. But I have had the 43mm the 77mm the FA 50 1.4. The 43mm is the only lens I regret not keeping.

The rendering of the DFA 50 is much better.
The DFA 50 offers much better subject separation options.
The AF is more precise.
I never could accept the softness of the edges on the 43.

HD Pentax-D FA* 50mm F1.4 SDM AW - happy with this lens? What are you using it for?

Was going to say something, but luckily Medox did bring up those photos.

I have DA*55, DFA50/2.8 macro and FA trio. Also DFA*70-200

I'm still having DFA*50 and 85 on my shopping list because of not just 2 examples above, but also because of that. Amazing quality edge to edge even wide open or little stopped down. This is not actually what you can do with any other of lenses I listed above(except 70-200, which is in league of DFA*). Using good light/lighting does bring every lens up couple notch. When it is great lens already even more so.

:)

Thank you.
These two star lenses (85 and 50) are similar in rendering. I use 85 outside (on locations) and 50 - in studio or when there is less space available. They are great really. I can't compare to 77 Ltd or DA* 55, or FA 50 directly. Those who use 77 Ltd or DA*55 are satisfied according to some posts in FB groups.
Here is a example of *85 at f1.4. There is more examples in dedicated Flickr group or in the link below (juzaphoto), where there are some full resolution samples

In case you shoot portraits using central composition there is no need of sharp edges or corners. But if you like shooting f1.4 and recompose e.g. the face to the area near the corner, then sharp corner is must for quality, detailed image. Or simply try to shoot whole height portrait with FA 50/1.4 and look to details near the edge. I think you will be disappointed. But DFA*50/1.4 will do the job.
Good sharpness near the edge is advantage if you shoot with face detection AF (it works almost near the edge of the frame) and position the face not in the center of the frame, because good sharpness near the edge is achieved due to no or very few spherical aberrations. This same could be said about phase detection AF points that are closer to the egde even Pentax AF system has just 33 points. But who knows, how much AF points will be in next models.
I agree that less or no spherical aberrations of DFA* 50/1.4 could be the reason why this lens produces different pictures compared to FA 77 Ltd or other older 50-55 mm lenses, but you still can achieve 3D pop using better lighting.

I think Ricoh needed to make this lens - precise, accurate, modern etc. However, Pentax do have so many options that don't display these characteristics, or not all of them, and this can make then excellent lenses too.

I used the DFA 50 macro for landscapes when I sold my prints, printed to A1 size. This lens is uniformly sharp across the frame and many customers commented how much detail there was "right to the edges". Perhaps it lacked the 'something' the Limiteds possess, but it is a great lens for some types of landscapes. I suspect the DFA* is similar in characteristic - a tad smaller, though ;-)

Personally, I'd always go for the DFA 77mm for portraits for that 3D rendering that is hard to identify, but exists - not always, but when it does I still gasp a little. The 43mm is similar, though I find it less impactful.

Guess, modern lenses have fantastic specs and consistency, but they may not throw up those surprises that the older lenses do. This is why I enjoy using Pentax lenses - surprises and now a few excellent, modern lenses. Soon the odd hole in the range will be filled and nobody will find a reason to complain. <- Nor saying the OP is complaining, to be clear, but just occasionally a voice does pop up for a moan ;-)

I feel a revolt coming along against this crazy must have centre to corner sharpness at F1.4 coming along.

I'm a landscaper but if I feel the OP should sell the DFA 50 and get a FA 77mm Limited as it is the best portrait lens Pentax made. I love the amazing 3d pop it makes and who looks at corners of portraits? Who looks at any photographs corners?

I have seen good portraits with the DFA* 50mm though.

I think you should see if you can get a copy of the DFA 24-70. It is a nice lens. At f2.8 and 24mm, the corners are pretty soft and there's quite a bit of vignetting there too, but things sharpen up quite a bit by the time you get to f4. For landscapes, I tend to be at f8 where it is plenty sharp.

Anyway, as far as new lenses in that range, it is what I would recommend.
