Pentax 100mm macro f/2.8 WR

This lens is so underrated!

And for me personally, I don't primarily use it for macro. But the colors and microcontrast are superb. In my experience, having used well over 100 lenses, I don't normally find a 3d pop, high microcontrast and exceptional definition in many 100mm.

The image quality for me subjectively resembles the Pentax 43mm limited 1.9 smc fa, which is of course also brilliant, though not as sharp.

If i sold the 100mm I'd probably get $250 for it. Kind of insane. and as I said, I think the lens sticks more out for the colors and general performance for shooting portraits and all random stuff than just macro. Is it the best macro lens I've used? Maybe, maybe not.

The encouraging results will definetely have me giving it a new go, but I still believe the long focus throw will make it difficult to use with the OVF. Will try again but if I'm left with the Pentax LCD screen, i'll use the lens on my mirrorless stuff instead :( Unfortunately. But I don't think I will be selling the lens at least.

Had the Voigtlander 58 1.4 sl ii with me to work. During my lunch break went for a walk with the Canon R5 and the CV.

Wow, the images are top notch. I don't think the lens should have any softness on the K-1 if focused correctly

Appreciate your input guys, but it's a full frame lens. That being said the focusing stuff is the same. I am still curious as to if ppl viewed the 58 as soft or sharp wide open and how they focus with the k1.

Thanks, Dave. It may be my poor English, but I was trying to say in the opening post, that the use of live view was what showed me I was getting the focus wrong in the OVF.

But this old and heavy (but also fantastic)camera isn't made to live view focus manual lenses - at least not for me. It is the only (digital) camera I own now except Leica M that has an OVF and that's what I love about it.

Hence why I am probably only using it on Fuji xt30 and canon r5 where I can at least focus peak in the (electronic) viewfinder :)

I am wondering if the unusual large focus throw on the cv 58 1.4 sl ii could be the reason why it is almost impossible to hit focus at 1.4 using the OVF. Don't suppose you guys have used it? Would be interesting to hear from someone who has :)

---------- Post added 09-21-23 at 08:19 AM ----------

If so I think IŽll only use it on my Canon R5 since it has focus peaking in its EVF.

Using Pentax K-1 for lcd with focus peaking is probably too much pain in the a.. for me.

Thanks BigMackCam! I'll take this into consideration, but the thing is I haven't noticed problems with manual focusing on the K-1 until this lens. I used to shoot the Rokinon 135mm f2 a lot for example. And the Pentax 50mm m 50 1.7, plus a few others.

Thanks a lot! I will check out this option. But it's weird, I havent had the issue with other manual focus lenses.

And not with AF lenses either. These days I only use the three amigos, they do fine.

Hey guys,

I bought a nearly unused CV 58mm 1.4 sl ii a few months ago.

Didn't fall for it on my K-1. Seemed very soft.

Then I decided to sell it. Only to try it once more to find some magic in the photos, actually some kind of colors or contrast or whatever, that I haven't seen in /on my other lenses.

So i decided to give it a new go. And I only use it with the optical viewfinder since that's the reason I still have my K-1. But when it beeps in focus, I this time checked my liveview and I think the focus comfirmation beep is wrong.

I have to calibrate it right? Darn, this is one thing you don't have to do on mirrorless.

Do people here have experience with K-1 and CV 58 1.4 sl? Soft wide open? Or sharp (hence me messing up the focusing)?

Focus comfirmation beep: how unique is this feature to Pentax (K-1)?

That's the point of the whole thread my friend. I'm saying that for me personally, they're not as effective as the focus comfirmation. Most people use focus peaking out of the options available on mirrorless cameras. I guess it's about taste, but for me focus peaking for subject photography is less effective :)

---------- Post added 07-23-21 at 05:30 AM ----------

I have the X-T30 too, and allthough the split screen was nice, to me it was mostly nostalgic, but again all of this is subjective I guess :) different things work better for different people :)

Maybe the DSLRs do, it's been a while since I used the D850. But both Nikon and Canon are now doing mirrorless first and foremost. I don't remember how the Z7 does, it's been a while, but the Canon R5 I have in front of me does not beep, and the focus guide only works with manual lenses with electronic connection... :) I was mainly comparing the focus comfirmation of the K-1 to the newer cameras though, newer cameras are, without the exception of K3iii - mirrorless..

Same here! I'm also using Fuji and the focus peaking is the best manual focus aid. Still not as good as focus comfirmation. But I love the DOF indicator etc on Fuji and focus peaking works fine for landscape :)

You're probably right, but for example Pentax manual lenses are popular reasonable lens choices for many owners of mirrorless cameras :)

I'm not sure about the cause, it may be as simple as the colors on the focus peak not being visible enough. And I know that not everyone agrees with me, especially regarding Fujis compatibility with legacy glass using focus peaking. For me the Sony was just a lot better. But again, the focus comfirmation is just the best solution for me :)

K-1 and Samyang 135 mm f 2, not a lot of combos out there that will deliver a better image in terms of sharpness and to a certain degree color, my friend is using the Samyang 135 f 2 with mf even :)

It is more to do with the effectiveness for me, I think the other brands are reliable enough but it's just a lot faster with Sony's peaking. I'm not a huge fan of Pentax' focus peaking either tbh, but doesnt matter since they can offer the focus comfirmation :)

Hey guys!

So like many of you, I also enjoy shooting manual lenses. Both vintage/legacy glass and newer MF lenses.

I've shot with Pentax, Fuji, Sony, Nikon and now Canon R5.

Most people will tell you shooting legacy glass is easier on a mirrorless system, especially Sony cameras where zooming in through your viewfinder and then nailing focus seems to be the preferred method.

However, having tried this on many systems, I actually feel Pentax has the best solution for it. Sony has a pretty effective focus peaking (in my opinion), Canon and Fuji not as good.

But even with Sony's relatively effective focus peaking, I feel the focus comfirmation beep and square that I get with the K-1 is the superior way. I am getting focus so much more quickly and precise with this method. I can't believe that Sony, Fuji or Nikon can't make something like this. Is it due to the tech involved in mirrorless cameras?

Anyway, just wanted to throw some more praise towards the K1. I don't use catch in focus letting the camera shoot when it's in focus, rather i just adapt the focus ring to the beep and I've gotten quite effective at it, even shooting a rabbit in flight getting it in focus,

---------- Post added 07-21-21 at 12:58 AM ----------

To clarify, I know focus peaking is a better method than the focus comfirmation beep when you're for example shooting landscapes and want to make sure that everything, or at least large parts of the frame is in focus. But if I'm shooting a subject, may it be an object or a person - to me the focus comfirmations is the best solution :)

Please eloborate? The focal length is at least pretty similar. I feel i'm getting more than sharp enough images at 2.8 too. Tbh I don't even mind some at 1.9.

---------- Post added 04-21-21 at 06:44 AM ----------

This! Same experience here. Better rendering :) And no, we're not wrong ;)

---------- Post added 04-21-21 at 06:46 AM ----------

How is the 43mm demanding to use? It's as easy as to pop the camera in auto (if you want to) and the camera will usually stop down to around f4 and you'll get amazing photos. :)

---------- Post added 04-21-21 at 06:47 AM ----------

Same here, buddy. Have had the 77 and 43 for a while and they're brillaint. But still, as you say, the 31mm is more expensive and I'm a bit unsure about the focal length...

---------- Post added 04-21-21 at 06:48 AM ----------

Nice! I wish there was a separate review section for those using the 43 with FF as it was intented for. Because I have a feeling it does better on FF using the whole image circle.

Thanks for clarifying!

The AF and sharpness is certainly better.

But am surprised you prefer the rendering. That being said, that's a subjective thing and I'm glad we don't agree on everything, that would make this discussion boring :)

Thanks again :)

I've had both lenses for 1-2 years and have 6390 shots with the 43mm and 5935 shots with the 50mm.

I prefer the 43. The images it produces is just magical. Yeah, maybe the 50 is better corrected for this and that, and better flare resistance and sharpness. But the IQ award goes from me to the 43.

Anyone agree?

That is a really good portrait my friend! Well done. Shows the possibilities too. I've used my 50mm* at events, also using flash and it helps a lot!

You're a real good portrait photographer!

How do you compare the 50mm* and the 85mm*? Both for portraits and in general?
