OK
Following UncleVanya's recommendations I picked up a K100D on ebay and have used it to sucessfuly convert the 16-50 to Screwdrive, it is now working fine on my K3-II.
Thanks to all for the links on how to do this, and all those who worked out how to do screwdrive conversions in the first place.

I have contacted Doormat (by PM) to work out some way of getting his lens converted.

PB
Note the K100D is much nicer than I expected for the money I paid for it (shutter count approx 3000), so It spent the day with me yesterday at Souter Lighthouse.

(DA* 60-250 can’t be converted, so it’s the exception to this rule.)

Thats interesting - Probbaly explains why there is a "faulty focussing" DA* 60-250 going on ebay (UK) for £20.

Thanks for the info.

quick question K100D - super or non-super. Didn't the super add the support for SDM?

I'll have a trawl through these forums for more info and set up an ebay search for a suitable body

Thanks

I don't have a suitable body (I have ist DS, K3-II and K1-II), from what I've read on these forums none of these are suitable for carrying out the conversion.

So,.....now comes the conversation with my wife about how I have to buy another camera to fix the lens on an older one, wish me luck.

There is a little SDM life left in mine, but it needs the "Live View" shuffle to get it activated. This hasn't really been much of an issue as it's spent most of the time since developing these symptoms on an ist DS. However, the ist DS will reach 20 next year, and is getting a little temperamental with batteries (the onboard battery backup having failed in it's teenage years) and so may end up being relegated to light duties.

it'd be useful to get the 16-50 converted to keep it in use.

Not sure if this is the right forum, but does anyone in the UK do Screwdrive conversions?

I have a 16-50 thats failing - I'd do it myself but I don't have a suitable camera body.

Turn off the "Slow Shutter Speed Noise Reduction" (On K3-II) and the camera will respond as you expect.

Essentially the camera is taking a "Dark Frame" with the same exposure time and subtracting it from the "Light Frame" to reduce noise. If I'm taking sub-exposures for stacking I usually turn the Slow Shutter Speed Noise Reduction off and then generate a seperate set of darks. lights. flats etc as appropriate. If I'm just grabbing a quick image - I usually leave it on.

I can also assist, I'm based in Durham (UK)

I have a fully functional ist DS (firmware 2.02) which is more of less the full time home to my sdm failed DA 16-50 2.8 and (non-P) TLL flashes.

If required I can post a 2Gb card formatted in camera with a couple of test shots for good measure..

It still gets used occasionally with B&W film.

AF400FTZ Failed

I have an old AF400FTZ flash which appears to have failed, it will not charge. I have left brand new AA's in it for several days to no avail, I have also tried this with fully charged NiCd's. I do get an occasional flicker on the ready and check lamps when turning on the power - then nothing.

Any suggestions? or do I assume this has failed beyond repair.

I'm not too worried about this, as I have other flashes, but it's been a useful flash over years and I'd be sad to see it go

With so many great offerings from Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc., why do you choose Pentax?

Like others - it's historical - I have good glass going back over 20 years that has plenty of life left in it. Add to this the the skill cap - if I'm 100% honest then I'd say (the best of) my kit is better than my skill level.

investing in another system wouldn't make me a better photographer - but selling up and switching manufacturer would make me a financially poorer one..

Ditto except that I swapped the DA35/2.4 on my DS for the DA40 a few days ago.

I'd assume the new APS-C flagship would be priced somewhat above the current KP prices, which gets very close to discounted K1-II territory. In which case I'd have to have a really good think about whether to go APS-C or FF.

Yes - I know about the e-books - I may pick one up for reference. I understand most of what the K3-II does, except for the multi-exposure modes. I think I know what these do - I'm just not sure when I'd use them.

I used to live in Glasgow for a while. I have quite a few picture from my film days of Cullin's and Munro's - MZ-10 with A28 2.8 on "orange"

My interests are fairly general with no specific areas of specialisation. I used to do quite a bit of photography whilst hill-walking many moons ago, but I'm not really up to that at the moment. I am thinking of setting myself up a challenge - but I'm currently looking for a bit of inspiration.

Hi

Long term lurker, first time poster.

Been using Pentax since the late 1970's, with an MX (which still functions but probably needs new light seals). I passed on the later manual bodies due to being an impoverished student, getting into the auto-focus trend with an MZ-10 and later an MZ-5n.

I moved into the digital realm with an ist DS and recently purchased a K3-II to bring myself up to date.
