Thank you all this is really helpful if no more than to show that other people have this same quandary. I am using a Pentax 3 iii so do want to couple the best lenses with it if possible. I have the 12-24, 50-135, 60-250 and 55-300 plm so not short of lenses but the 16-50 is my most used range and I want to get it right!

Hi Unfortunately the Staff report only compares the older Sigma which includes stabilisation and the older Pentax 16-50 which we know is a lesser lens than the new star PLM Version. I fully agree that the sigma 17.50 is excellent but I am just unsure whether the new Pentax 16-50 is excellent +++. I was surprised by the sigma 17-50, having previously, in my Fuji life, had the brick (Xf 16-55mm 2.8) I rate the Sigma better.

Hi, I have the HSM version which as you say is quite fast, I found it to be a pretty good lens - I wasn't disappointed with it . I just wondered if anyone had both and whether they found it worth it to change apart of course as previously mentioned the weather sealing. I had forgotten about that and I do tend to do quite a bit of outdoor shooting, animals, wildlife and waterfalls being the favourite.

Hi, A while ago I bought a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 second hand specifically to use at an indoor winter wedding, it was great and did all that I wanted on the day, it was sharp and the colours good very little post work to do. This was before the HD Pentax* 16-50 plm came out and I am just wondering whether to swap the sigma for a Pentax plus of course the payment balance of about £1000. I know at the end of the day it is my choice whether I blow the money or not. As a learning amateur you might think it not worth it but the extra bit at the wide end and the quality of some of the photos I have seen are very tempting, plus it is the odd one in the pack - every other lens, and I have far too many, have a Pentax label on them, OCD rules! Hi You need to buy Pentax lenses with an aperture ring to give control so you are really looking at K,M,A,F and Fa lenses unless you acquire a PK to X adapter that also gives aperture control however as said the Da lenses that you could then use would be out of your price range.

Like You I must also be crazy as I had exactly the same thoughts, having just added two more film cameras to my collection - both in mint condition - I also thought how brilliant it would be just to have a low resolution preview before imprinting on film. We can all dream!!

This is really disappointing to read. This is a lens I planned to buy when the money tree grows, I bought a sigma 17-50 f2.8 as a fill-gap until the hd lens came out but I really like to keep pure to pentax if I can. However, I do not want to expend a lot of hard earned cash on a lemon. Shall have to think very hard about this one - it is ok while Pentax keep replacing them but that won't last for ever, plus months without a lens while they decide.

A man of my own heart! I had been a Fuji convert since the Fuji X-T1 was announced which I loved. I then had a flirtation with the X-H1 and finally an X-T3, I also had all of the red star zoom lenses 16-50, 50-140 and 100-400. But, I had also started to collect Pentax Film cameras and a few lenses and in a mad moment bought a secondhand KP at a very good price and only 3000 actuations. I was immediately sold on the Pentax ethos, the ergonomics left the Fuji X-T3 for dead and what ever the scales say the KP feels lighter than the X-T3 and the pictures and colour just feel more natural and honest.
I rebought an X-T1 as a light compact system - which I love and have now order the K3 III Silver premium kit - Don't ask about lenses - I think we are now approaching 50 lenses - but don't tell the wife!!!

Thanks Steve, That is really great, I have followed your instructions and the Kp is now recognized by the program and it finds the AFA information. I have only one trouble - I have sold the KP and waiting for the K3 III to arrive, so will have to add another line of code me thinks. But it is really great to at least having the programme working. - Big thanks
Edit - Have now added another line of code for the new K3 III so all should be well. I also note that the K1-II is not included, I would therefor suggest that the following is added to the cam.dat file.
["pentax kp"] = { ["alias"] = "Pen-KP", ["fptype"] = "Pentax_1", ["afastatus"] = "skip"},
["pentax k-3 iii"] = { ["alias"] = "Pen-K3III", ["fptype"] = "Pentax_1", ["afastatus"] = "skip"},
["pentax k-1 ii"] = { ["alias"] = "Pen-K1II", ["fptype"] = "Pentax_1", ["afastatus"] = "skip"},

Actually Focus tune says 25 times the focal length which I find about correct. Has anyone had any success actually using Focus Tune with Pentax files? When I tried to use it, it could not find the AFA in the Exif data even though it is there when you open the data up with other software. I contacted the seller and he chose not to reply with an answer. However the ruler out of the lensalign is brilliant for doing the adjustments.

Thank you for your comments, after a few hours the frustration got the better of me. Yes, I have now printed and bound the introduction with all of the default settings, I find this a very useful reference to tuck into my camera bag rather than ruining the full printed manual.

Well That's great ! I'm really pleased that you all managed to download the Manual so easily - you made me feel a proper Numpty!!! In spite of running the very latest windows software and subscribing to Microsoft 365 and updates neither of my laptops would play ball even after disabling all security. ………… But the IPhone did play ball and I managed to download a copy on to it and then email a copy to myself which then opened perfectly on my laptop. - That's modern technology for you
:mad::mad: But at long last I am a happy bunny and can start to digest the manual before my Silver kit arrives :):):):)

Likewise, I have an X-T1 which is a brilliant light camera, I then upgraded(?) to an X-H1 which was a nightmare because some idiot had put the Q button straight on the end of the thumb grip so that every time I picked the camera up to take a photo it went into the menu - it took them 3 year to decide to let you cancel that button. I couldn't wait that long so then I changed it for an X-T3 which as others have said I hated because of the handling - it felt heavy and ugly in your hand The reason they made it like that was to act as a heat sink for the improved video which I am not interested in.
So I bought a KP, loved it, and am now fully committed to Pentax - My pre-order is done for the Silver k3 III kit!

A big thank you to everybody on here for posting so much information about doing the conversion back to screwdrive. Here in the UK I managed to buy a 50-135 on eBay at decent price and surprise surprise it was fully working and a later model after the earlier problems had been largely sorted. However you could not describe the AF as quick and I was curious how much quicker and accurate the screwdrive would be.
I bought a K-m with 9000 shutter actuations and looking like new but with autofocus a mile out and have today done both the drive conversion and sorted the camera autofocus at the same time. I managed to find an uncorrupted version of PKtether but actually ended up using the sd card hack to get directly into the debug menu. From there on it was all very quick and straightforward. The results are fantastic on my Kp, the autofocus is quick and not particularly noisy and now gives you confidence that it is going to nail focus first time which I did not feel was happening before.
The intention had been to put the K-m back on the market but it is in such good condition and now works correctly that I think it will stay for a while - I've got a nasty habit of collecting cameras! I think we will soon be adding a K3 III so whether my Kp will stay is still up for debate!

Having gone against the grain and moved from Fuji to Pentax I'm starting to get really excited. My first "proper camera" was an X-T1 which I loved and took some fabulous photos. I then was an early adopter of the X-H1 which for me was a disaster as every time I picked it up or brought it up to my eye my thumb pressed the Q button which some idiot designer had decided that the end of the thumb grip was the perfect place for a fn button, I got rid pretty quick and was an early adopter of the X-T3 which I was never happy with, they made it larger and heavier to enable the heat from taking video to be dispersed and I felt it photos lack the purity of those from the X-T1 - we parted company plus all of the red dot top range lenses! I then re-bought a secondhand X-T1 and on the spur of the moment a guaranteed KP with 3000 actuations from a well know UK dealer for £450. I have not looked back. I now have a collection of modern Pentax lenses and a huge collection from the legacy back catalogue.
My Fuji inventory is gradually been reduced and I will end up with the X-T1 plus some smaller lighter lenses as a compact system. The future hopefully PENTAX!

Hi I think that is a 200 not a 201 which you have. the 201 head goes up and down but does not rotate, but is very good for bouncing off ceiling etc - Michael

Asahi man has just posted on the other forum that he thinks the K-New looks like coming in October. I hope so, then it will just be in the Pentax 100th year and we will all be happy before we die of anticipation.

I had a surprise visitor yesterday and went to grab the KP, Having been following this thread I had been trying the 55-300 plm with different settings and adapters including the 1.4x teleconverter. However I remembered that I had a 1.7x Sony VCL-DH1758 front teleconverter which I bought a while back but it was never very successful with the Fuji 50-230. So when I had a surprise visitor on the lawn it was the KP with 55-300 + the 1.7x Sony. Shot through double glazing with lens at 230mm giving 390mm at f8 the result impressed me greatly. I have since tested it out to 300mm/510mm and the results are excellent. The beauty of the front teleconverter being that you can still use the full aperture of the lens. The down side is that when the lens is set between 70mm and 100mm there is vignetting - but not at 55mm or above 100mm
