The large assortment of windows and buildings is interesting in one photo. The planes centered overhead flying to the Starburst of a Sun and the airplane shadow on the building seals it for me. Great shot.

Gorgeous shot. Love the composition. The cactus look like hands waiting to catch the rain, and the lone pole with cross bar adds a human touch. I have seen both these phenomenon in the Arizona desert, but never at the same time.

K-50 pictures are black when taken through viewfinder, but not in live view - help

Once again, if the aperature control has failed, live view would not get proper exposures either, but the OP says live view is fine. Still points to the failure of the sensor located in the prism, which controls exposure only during viewfinder operation and not during live view, which is controled by the main sensor. Question for the OP, when set to full manual control, with ISO, aperature and shutter all set for proper exposure, is the picture still dark in viewfinder mode? Full manual control does not depend on any in camera metering, so should work in either viewfinder or live view. Try that and let us know your results.

K-50 pictures are black when taken through viewfinder, but not in live view - help

If the problem is with the diaphragm actuator, it would cause the same exposure problem in both viewfinder and live mode. It occures to me that in DSLR cameras there are two light metering sensors, one in the pentaprism housing that works when in view finder mode, reflected by the mirror, and in live view with the mirror up the main sensor itself determins the correct exposure. I'm thinking the sensor in the viewfinder is faulty, that's why the images are dark in that mode. You can check diaphragm operation by setting to manual, set shutter speed to one second and while looking into the lense you can watch the diaphragm close when you trigger the shutter. Try it with various f stop settings and observe for varied aperature operation. If the meter in the prism is faulty, I would think the camera should still expose properly in both live view and viewfinder mode if you use full manual mode providing the ISO, shutter and aperature are all set correctly. Something to try anyway.

Excuse my ignorance, but if the diaphragm control is not working and stopping the aperture down instead of opening it to the proper value, then won't the pictures be dark in both viewfinder and live view? If the pictures are exposed properly in live view then the aperture must be working correctly. When using the viewfinder and you press the shutter the mirror goes up, the diaphragm goes to the proper setting and the shutter fires. In live view the mirror is already up and when you press the shutter release the diaphragm goes to the proper setting and the shutter closes and then fires at the proper speed and then opens again for live view. If the pictures are completely black in viewfinder mode, I think it is because the mirror is not going up before the shutter fires. If that is the case then while looking through the viewfinder and pressing the shutter release the viewfinder will not black out during shutter activation. If I am wrong, please correct me, I'm not a expert on camera operation.

So, for all of us who are drooling all over ourselves looking at that fantastic photo, about how much have you invested in your telescope, tracking mount and imaging cameras. Also, how much better is this photo vs. what you could have done with your K1?

[Printing] Setting up a color darkroom?

It's been a long time since I had my color darkroom, another addition that I found to be indespensible is a color analyzer. I had a Beseler PM2 which worked very well. It makes getting the settings on the dichro color head much easier to do. Analyzers are available on ebay for a fraction of what they were new. My enlarger was a Beseler 23C with a dual dichro color head, it was quite excellent, though there are probably better ones available now. Electric powered print drums are nice, but i just hand agitated them, price conscious I guess. Have fun with whatever color set up you end up with.

Will Canon and Nikon Ditch Crop-Sensor Cameras?

Untill full frame cameras become as affordable as crop cameras I dont think they will become dominate. Also smaller cameras are in demand, and full frame sensors don't lend themselves to small cameras. As sensor technology and manufacturing technmiques improve, who knows what the future will bring?

Years ago my brother gave me a Pentax SF-10 with a 28-80mm and 70-200mm Takumar lenses. That makes for really cheap lenses. Recently purchased a used K3 and trying to figure out how it works, not easy for an old guy who has been away from serious photograpphy for many years. The old SF-10 was pretty simple, and took very good photos. These taken with the 28-80mm on the K3.

Wish for a 4:3 or 5:4 sensor

I don,t think it matters what ratio your sensor is. You are almost always going to crop it to fit your final result. No sensor size will always give you a perfect ratio fo all shots. A camera with multiple viewfinder crops would be ideal, I don't know which ones have the best selection.

Is a used K3 worth it?

$490 sounds high for a well used body only. I just bought a K-3 with SMC DA 18-55mm WR lens on ebay for $390 with less than 1700 shutter releases, nearly new. The advantage of buying from a place like B&H is their return and warranty. On ebay there is always a risk but I have generally done well. The only thing I miss on the K-3 is an articulated screen, that would be a definate improvement.
