Quick 2 cents from a hobby photographer.
Please take a look at the lens review section here. There's a wealth of information.
I've been using a 50mm M f/1.7 on every one of my Pentax cameras since 1982. It's a lovely lens that really can get me through most everything. I've used the 2.0 and it's just fine, and they are so inexpensive, it might be worth keeping as a back up or beater for bad weather / beach etc.
I'm a big fan of the A35mm f/2.8. I bought it on whim for shooting street photography in New York, and it's become a favorite.
Have fun!

Piling on.
Excellent experiences with KEH and "bargain" items.
I only buy used equipment so really don't have any issues with the occasional ding or scuff.

Hey Folks,
I'm just a hobby photographer, but both quantitative surveys and qualitative surveys (focus groups) have been my day job since 1984, and despite trying to retire a few times, still are.
My opinion is that this is legit.
It reads as a Japanese originally crafted survey amongst various internal groups with varied interests within the Pentax/Ricoh corporation where everyone was able to "get a couple of questions in", translated into English (and probably other languages) that have multiple (but not completely exclusive responses) in a drop down thru customer usage / journeys. That's why it's kind of a slow read in English.
I'm not a pro photographer, just a dude who has written and seen a bunch of surveys over many years for many companies.
My sincere hope is that we continue to see Pentax be super successful with their strategy to appeal to niche photographers.
Meanwhile, I'll just keep loving using Takumar and K/M/A lenses and anxiously await the Film Project Cameras!
Just two cents from here...

Ok, get this last night a client cancelled a set of meetings in Orlando on April 8th and moved the venue to... Dallas TX!!!
Going to be able to view the eclipse and having a client pay for travel and lodging! How cool is that!
Maybe I should go buy a lottery ticket too! :D

All,
The self-timer on one of my Spotmatics is overshooting the usual stop point. Everything works fine, timer duration, firing the shutter etc. It's just going past the stop point over to the camera body.
Is there some easy remedy to this?
It's really just more a cosmetic issue than anything else.
The camera otherwise works fine and sees a lot of use.
Thanks!

Thank you for posting! That was amazing.
It also brought back memories of long-long-long ago.
My older cousin, in my aunt's basement, smashing my uncle's flash bulbs with a hammer! Exploding and shooting glass everywhere.
Good times!

OP, please heed the comments from UncleVanya!!!
The K-50 I have developed the dreaded block right smack during the middle of an important family event.
Auto was dead as a doornail...
I didn't have a back up body.
Thankfully being an old guy, I was able to go full manual in a couple of seconds.
If it's not already second nature, it's totally worth spending a couple days getting comfy shooting in M with the green button.
Best,
Joel

FWIW...
Works for M42 also! And beyond Takumars.
Just playing around with a 1954 A. Schacht München Travenar 135 f/3.5.
Focus and then drop the aperture down to whatever and the camera meters it properly.
I can be lazy with old lenses now :D:D:D

I did 3 weeks in Japan last Feb, with the sole reason for the trip to shoot pictures.
It was a mix of urban and way-off-the-beaten path destinations.
The kit was K-1 II with M20 f/4, A35 f/2.8, M50 f/1.7 and A 70->210 f/4.0
I was so glad that I had the 20, some places are really tight, and a 28 would not have cut it. The other great thing about the 20 is that you can just set it at hyperfocal and simply use the camera at waist level in very busy crowds (like at some of the markets).
35 was fine for the street and most of the parks.
50 got way more use than I thought it would. Primarily doing detail shots where I wanted to have very narrow depth of field, think bamboo at a temple and various snow compositions. And there's enough light at night in the cities to use it easily.
Wild card was the zoom. I needed it for the Snow Monkey Hot Springs. Other than that it just got occasional use.
If you haven't been to Japan before, the real trick is to pack light. You really don't want to be on the trains with a suitcase. It gets squeezy quick.
I travel the world with a 40 liter GoRuck G2 backpack. Everything (clothes, camera, I mean everything!) goes in it, and it's fine for a month on the road.
Anyway, have fun! Japan is wonderful and make sure you go to the Pentax Clubhouse in Tokyo!!!

I'm not sure if this is "right" but here's what I do.
1) Be in Manual mode for green button metering
2) Set outer ring to most minimum stopped-down aperture on the lens (f/16 or f/22) and leave it there.
3) Spin inner ring to most wide-open maximum aperture on the lens.
4) Focus wide open!!!
5) Spin the inner ring down to the depth of field you want & green button meter.
6) Shoot :D
This sounds like a lot, but in practice I spin down the inner ring with my left hand. While my right hand thumb is on the green button and my second finger is on the shutter.
It's all kind of one smooth move and is super quick.
Like I said, not sure if this is "right" but on the K-1 II it works for me.
Have fun!

Good question!
I have the camera in front of me right now.
If I press the shutter release button half way down the light meter comes on.
If I --hold-- the shutter release button half way down, the light meter --stays-- on.
If I either take the picture or let go of the shutter release button, the light meter goes off.
If you have not already done so, please make sure you have fresh batteries and there is no corrosion on the contacts. After not using the camera for long time I did have a bit of corrosion that was getting in the way of the light meter operating properly.
And otherwise, these cameras were built in the mid 1970's, so all the electronics simply may not be functioning properly at this age.
I'll leave it to any other K2 owners for additional ideas!

I've had a K2 for years.
What you describe is the correct way for the camera to operate.
The light meter indicator (showing the shutter speed) activates when you press the shutter release down half way. This way you can check your shutter speed before exposure. It does not matter if the shutter is cocked or if there is film in the camera or not.
You can, of course, simply take the picture depressing the shutter release fully and the camera will meter it (in automatic mode).
Personally I always just check the exposure by depressing the shutter half way (manual or on automatic).
Does that make sense to you?

Roadboat 24,
Thank you so much!!! It's right there on page 46 as you point out. Clearly I missed it!
It's C3 in the control panel and then 'type 2' with lock button and back control wheel.
It still took me a few attempts to get it correct.
Have a great day!

All,
Wondering if the K-1 II filter selection can be "locked" to prevent accidental changing.
When shooting our holiday pictures, I somehow hit the right hand toggle and ended up switching everything from 'auto select' to 'muted'.
I know I can go back in the RAW files and add the color back in, but was just planning to send out jpeg snapshots.
Is there some way to lock that right hand button?
I've looked but can't seem to find anything anywhere.
Thanks!

Neat comparison, thanks for posting.
Question. What is in front of the baseball please?
There's some really interesting changes in the rendering of that sort of string of light /reflections. It's interesting how little it changes on f/1.2 when stopped down a bit.

Similar lens "collection" as you have. Almost all manual. Enjoy them for the same reasons.
Went with the K-1 II and love it.
It's wonderful to work full frame as the older glass was intended.
Strong vote for the K-1!

Very cool collection.
Looking at that gave me a flashback to reading photography magazines of that era - and being a broke college student - just simply drooling over the pages!
I hope that you're able to enjoy shooting with each one!

So, it is a thing. Or at least it "was" a thing.
I came across it in a rather deep piece of work that I'm slowly working my way through...only have an electronic copy, so can't post the example image. The text about the practice is interesting.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Photography A Cultural History Fifth Edition. c. 2021
By Mary Warner Marien
Page 136: "The idea of securing the shadow image, before the sitter deceased was not always possible; it sometimes meant commissioning images of dead people. The custom of creating a death bed image, by making a death mask or a painting, was democratized through photography and became a routine practice among the mid-19th century middle class. Because of high mortality rate, infants and children were the frequent subjects of such photographs, which were not, as today, considered ghoulish. The post-mortem photography became widespread in America and throughout Europe. Later when most people had photographs of their family and friends, the practice declined."

I was terrified of cleaning my K1-II sensor. Despite best efforts to keep everything clean, some dust and dirt had gotten on there and would not be blown out.
The Pentax swabs worked exactly as intended. It was really much ado about nothing.
Now if I can get over my fear of doing a firmware update...:D
