If you have the JPG's then look at the exif data, it may show you the lens info. If not contact the photographer and ask her what the lens was.

Ode to the *ist Ds vs/ K5 and beyond...

The Ds didn't have the green button, but the original *ist D does have it, The default function today is the same as it was on the *ist D, that is in Program line to return to Program line after you had manually adjusted one of the control dials, And it also stops down and meters when using manual lenses in M mode.

I still have my first Pentax ME Super, although It has not been used in many years. So the *ist D was my first Digital SLR, I chose it because I could use all my lenses that I already had, and I still really like Pentax cameras.

If I remember, back when it first came out, Pentax had said that the * was a wild card, so you could put what ever word in front of it to describe it, like BESTist or FASTist or WHATEVERist you like. It really didn't translate to English that well in my opinion (at least culturally).

I didn't really notice FF or BF issues with my older bodies. I guess you just get to know the limitations of your equipment and adjust to it.

I just got my original *ist D back from my daughter and son-in-law. I took a test shot yesterday to make sure it's still working. Wow, I'm surprised at the colors and sharpness that it captures! even though it's only 6MP. I'll be shooting with it over the next couple weeks and posting some photos comparing it to the K-3, just for grins.

Welcome to the Zoo! Since others are recommending shooting modes, I'll chip in too. I personally like the "P" or Program line mode. I've been using it since my first Pentax DSLR the *IST-D. I like it because you can select the program line you want to shoot, such as speed or wide DOF landscape or narrow landscape. when you are in P mode the camera will select the Aperture and Shutter, (iso is statically set by you). If you want to switch to Aperture priority you just adjust the aperture with the back control dial, if you want to switch to shutter priority just adjust the front control dial. If you want to go back to program line just push the green button. I find it very flexible.

Awesome series Ron! I think this should prove to you that you don't need to carry but one camera. Although you stated that you brought the K5 and the K01 you only showed K3 images in this thread. And by the way you captured some very nice images.

I to am just starting to familiarize my self with the K3 and I'm loving it. I really like the dual SD card option that we now have. I agree that the file sizes are a bit large, but then again storage is just getting cheaper every day. So go buy a few more terabytes of storage and keep shooting.

K-3: Anyone solved the RAW PEF or DNG on Mac?

No, I'm not saying that it will never be supported, what I'm saying is that Apple will support it when they determine that they have enough customers complaining that they don't. Squeaky wheel.

I would guess that the DNG issue is due to a camera source label that is not recognized. As to the software companies developing support, most just need a sample file to support converting it. And no Adobe is not going to put software development resources on it until they know that they are going to lose revenue to competitors.

I'm sorry but Ricoh is only responsible for the software that they provide with the camera. You need to open a service request to Apple for your program not supporting your new camera. Otherwise use the software that was supplied or go download and buy a license for the full version of SilkyPix.

I pushed the button Saturday night, It should be here on Wednesday! I can't wait!

So I ordered the 18-135 kit, I'm hoping that I will be happy enough with it that I can carry it on the motor cycle without any additional lenses. If so i will give my Panasonic GX1 to my daughter.

Buy the K3, crop the image or get a longer FL lens - keep the K5 ?

Yes, I had an early version of it that I bought back in the film days. 70-300 DL macro if I remember right. It took some great shots with my *istD. As a matter of fact it's still with the *istD, gave it to my daughter and her husband (I'm trading them my GX1 for it, to get it back, when I get my K3). I did have to watch those bright light dark sharp edges though, lots of purple on it.

there is noticeable CA on that Sigma, I'd keep the DA*300 and get the K3 and let the K5 go

(I know he's not looking at the sigma 70-300, but how does the 500 he's looking at compare? does it have CA?)

hey, I'm just a little slow to respond to this type of thread, I can't help it if you guys already hijacked it for entertainment purposes! And besides, what's wrong with trying to bring an out of control conversation back on track? Even if it is of no real . . . (wait that would have been rude).

Remember a camera company called Minolta? When it was purchased by Sony, they didn't bother branding the product line with anything other than Sony Alpha. So be thankful that Ricoh has seen fit to maintain the "Pentax" brand/product line.

I personally don't have a problem with Ricoh putting their name the camera, after all they do own the Pentax brand and trademark. I'm thankful that they value the Pentax brand enough to have purchased it in the first place. And if you want to see our beloved Pentax K mount system flourish in the future, I would suggest you join us in buying the newly branded Pentax cameras by Ricoh.
