Thanks BMC. As I was reading your reply, my brain kicked in and replied; "duh" LOL.

True, as when I shoot night stars, while on A on the ring, I do often jump between M and Bulb modes to make my shots.

Good Evening,

I thank you all, fantastic feedback. Of course, I wake up in the middle of the night, starting to realize what you all conveyed. I have to shake my head at myself as I work in DNA Forensics and Biometrics. I can build a $5 Mln ABIS (Automated Biometric ID System), and yet, there are times when, as I noted, the obvious just escapes me. As most pointed out, I awake in bed; "you idiot, you're using the cam dial to set the settings" and it just went from there.

I agree with those who highlighted variations in lenses and quality. I will say, I've been very pleased with the Pentax SMC 15mm f/4.0 DA ED AL Limited Wide Angle. Yet was so so with the Pentax DA 55-300mm f/405.8 ED lens. My goal now is to find a good landscape lens. I've been making the move back to prime lenses and find I wasn't satisfied with a large range zoom like the 55-300mm as photo clarity and quality didn't see that great.

I accept all recommendations on suggestions for a solid landscape lens.

Again, thanks everyone. I really appreciate the patience of a guy who, as I say; train went into the ravine (my explanation of a lost thought).

Lens suggestions for landscape photography

Good suggestions.

This looks as good as any place to throw out a question. I shoot primarily landscape/nature. Yet, I have always be back and forth on the best mm range to use for landscape. My gear:

Pentax K-3 Limited Premium Silver Edition
Pentax SMC 15mm f/4.0 DA ED AL Limited Wide Angle
Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX DG RF Aspherical Wide Angle
Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6. DC Macro HSM

I really like my Sigma 20mm for night stars; takes great shots and good on the landscape general. I recently had me Sigma 18-250 take a dive off a hill and it died badly in the fall. This leaves me with deciding to replace the 18-250 or start going more with prime lenses. While a longer mm range zoom is great to avoid carrying a lot of gear, the overall quality is not as good as a prime lens. With that in mind, like to hear what you or others recommend for landscape shots.

I'm in such places as Zion, Arches, Grand Tetons, Anza Borrego. I read how many opt for a prime 35mm or 50mm, some go with a smaller mm range.

Thanks

One other question I forgot to touch on; any recommendations on lens hoods. My Sigma 20mm does not come with a hood, Sigma doesn't make one for it, not even a screw mount, so will have to go with an add on, possibly rubber. Any one have good feedback on any particular brand.

Good Day All,

This is one of the moments in life when you just completely lose any thought; a brain fart. I'm probably asking a question most will think is obvious, but seriously, my brain is just not functioning this week.

I have a K-3 Limited. One of my lenses is a Sigma 20mm 1: 1.8 that I use for star shots and landscape. My cam was flashing F-- today and I realized the lens was not set to "A" It got me thinking, and that can just be a bad thing some days because I just overthink. Obviously, as a Sigma lens, I have to put it on the A setting, which prohibits from using the varied f-stops on the lens. Knowing that, is there any disadvantage to utlizing A settings on varied lenses vs using lenses (more often than not, Pentax lenses) that allow you to pic specific settings. In short, is the A (automatic) setting as reliable as the standard setting?

I've never really found discussions on this and was wondering. I do like Pentax, I only have Pentax cams, but have found not all Pentax lenses are great. I've had some under-perform compared to some Sigmas and others which often requires you use the A setting.

Thanks

Good overview. I've been shooting landscape & wildlife for years (well, everything for years, but love outdoors the most). I embarked on star shooting last year. I'm using a K-3 Limited. I've found having something int he foreground always adds to the dramatics. I took pics of my Cam settings with the photo on the cam screen to give some perspective. Highly recommend tripod or bean bag and used the Pentax GPS unit

For the Milky Way, here are (2) shots

Cam - Pentax K-3 limited
Lens - Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX DG RF Aspherical Wide Angle Lens - Love this lens!

Access - Pentax GPS OGPS-1 Astrotracer & Pental F-Control Remote

First Shot

ISO 6400

F-Stop: 3.5
Exposure 10 secs

Second Shot

ISO 6400
F-Stop 3.5
Exposure 20 secs

These were taken at June Lake CA. I personally feel 20 secs is the sweet spot for Milky Way. The Astrotracer did well to eliminate star trail. Of course, star trail can be dramatic and simply remove the tracer and go for a nice 30 sec - 2 min shot.

This realm is still new to me, so this thread is great resource. I look forward to shots this June at June Lake; Anza Borrego State Park (in CA) is so dark, night shooting is intense.
