Very interested to see how you get on with this lens as it recently made it on to my radar. Seen some nice starbursts from it.

Mind you, a lot of things make it on to my radar without getting any closer.

Do geese arrive, or for that matter, leave any other way :D

I normally get hissed at by them when I walk past them in the local park lake.

This is just a comment on the E m5 iii weatherproofing; This is a still from a video I was taking, one of several, whilst skiing during a blizzard. The camera was soaked and soaked for some time and then to compound things I went in from the cold to a warm mountain cafe for a well deserved hot chocolate, whereupon the camera completely steamed up, only clearing after a period back out. I'm pleased to report it continued functioning without a hiccup, unlike it's owner!

I've watched some of it, the tech live shows tend to be better as questions come up in the comments which can lead in interesting directions, the product reviews tend to be a bit gushy and non-descript.

Talking of macro, I'm still holding off getting one as I'm finding the 12-40 can do a lot of what I tend to do with a macro, not being a proper macro photographer. If I hadn't already copied the majority of my film stuff with the D FA100 I would probably get the 60mm but as it is my head is being turned by by the Voigtlanders or possibly the 42.5 F1.2 pana-Leica. We'll see.

Blossom is out and the snowdrops and daffodils, which always leads to a bad few weeks for me, allergy wise, though I'm fine the rest of the year.

I would further expand on your premise and say, there's going out to take pictures and there's carrying a camera to record what you're doing and what you see. The two aren't incompatible, there's a Venn overlap but in my choice of gear and accessories I still lean towards portability.

The KP and the 20-40 used to be my choice for a holster bag at my side on my hip or over my shoulder. I get that carrying method from taking a camera mountaineering, scrambling and climbing and it always needing some protection from the elements or rocks.

I did once not close the holster properly and as I scrambled over some rocks, the camera slipped out, I yelled and the bloke in front of me turned and caught my camera before it disappeared 3000ft below. That was some time ago on a winter traverse of the Aonach Eagach and the camera an OM10. He didn't pay for his beer that night.

Next week I'm going skiing, taking my camera on a holster over my shoulder with a stabiliser strap. I expect only to record the trip this time.

If he's just talking about Sigma, those lenses have a lot of competition, m43 is well served for lenses, however, in general the camera market does seem to be moving to a higher cost lower volume model.

I don't know if anyone gets the Olympus emails, I do because you have to sign up for them for the extended warranty, so they send through all the promotional stuff and various offers but some of it's quite useful, various live workshops and tech explanations of certain functions or customisation. There's a live session on the 90mm tomorrow if anyone is interested

Image quality... not linked to ISO? hints?

A dilemma indeed. I would say that pschlute makes a good point and it's a tricky decision. I do think if you buy the K70, it's a good enough camera to suddenly make lens deficiencies obvious and your 100-300 will still be a weak point, a more obvious weak point.

I would add, a good lens is something you'll keep beyond one camera and somehow I see this road you're on continuing because we've all been there. Forums are terrible places for Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS).

Either choice will improve things for you and either choice may lead you on to the next perceived weakness. I used the Tamron on my K5, eventually I moved on from the K5 to the KP because the KP controlled noise better in low light, so in this regard pschlute has a point.

I think you're just hitting the limits of your equipment here, particularly the lens and you're viewing those limits at 300% crops, so that's always going to look ugly, though I appreciate you've done that to illustrate a point. There are some cheaper 70-200 lenses out there which I've seen excellent results from on here from people covering sports. One of them is the Tamron 70-200 F2.8 Di, it's just about the most accessible price wise, it's still about $400 so accessible is relative. Other options include using a fixed focal length lens like a 100mm or 135mm F2.8 and waiting until the action comes into it's zone, I've used similar for my sons badminton tournaments and climbing competitions in the past but in all those things you are always struggling with light and colour cast and iso, so the keeper rate is low.

By the way the images look fine viewed normally and they'll still make great memories in the future. Most of my early shots of my children were on film or a 3Mp canon compact, I still love looking at them and they're not as good as the images you're getting now.

That's a fabulous setup but I'm surprised on two levels, one that it exists in a school, it can't be cheap to run and two that you still have a film based setup and haven't moved to digital, unless you have both.

The only setup I've used like that was way back in art college but that had colour darkrooms too. After that I survived in cupboards, attics and bathrooms with various borrowed equipment and was quite thankful when digital came along, although I hadn't appreciated there'd be another learning curve for digital. Sadly no pics of any of those situations I was in were taken.

Nearly missed absolutely perfect conditions for this shot this morning, which I'd eyed up some time ago. It looked slate grey out of the window and I lingered for a 2nd coffee. When I did finally get out and down to the estuary, there was a stunning temperature inversion and perfect flying conditions. I took several shots but never improved on this, the first one I took.

Manual exposure 1/320 at 200iso and this has been run through Gigapixel AI to remove the jpg artifacts.

Nice pics. The K5 is still a very good camera and that 16Mp sensor is capable of some really nice images, it should do your hound justice.

Talking about detail is an interesting thing though and it's important to understand why you get more detail from larger sensors. One of the reasons is noise and noise is related to light gathering and sensor amplification. This is where full frame pulls ahead from m43 and apsc. At some point, below a certain ev, sensors have to boost their amplification and you get signal noise. Broadly speaking, noise destroys detail and it destroys tonality, you lose it first in the shadows, so I think below about ev5 a ff camera will always outperform m43 because it needs less amplification because it's gathering more light. Likewise if you need to boost the ISO beyond base, a larger sensor will do better. In other circumstances, where you don't need much amplification from base ISO, it's less certain, so I can quite believe the Olympus claim with a good lens. That's not to say I think m43 is the equal of the K1, I've seen enough K1 images to admire the tonality of that particular sensor and it's dynamic range but not all sensors are equal and a lot of circumstances are equal, so I would think M43 is quite capable of landscapes, limitations excepted and with good technique and post processing you can substantially close the gap.

Will Pentax ever have focus stacking?

Focus stacking only works with certain Olympus lenses and doesn't work at all with Panasonic lenses, so I would guess that the focus motor has to be controlled precisely, so the lens compatibility list includes the macro lenses and some of the pro range of lenses.

Edit: I should add that focus bracketing works with any lens but then you have to combine the images, stacking does it automatically.

If you're not doing much photography, why consider a new system, for the price, that repair is economical and the K70 a good camera. If there are other reasons you might want a new camera, then you need to evaluate them and cost them and then decide if you gain anything from the move, I know this because I've been there and got the badge.

I haven't used the drone too much over the last year, enough so that flying it and orienting it is pretty natural now, I'm not pushing the stick the wrong way any more and I'm comfortable enough with it so that if I lose sight of it, I don't feel any panic and losing sight of it is kind of inevitable if you're looking down to your phone to check information or take a picture, even if if it's only briefly. I did do a survey of my roof with it, needs work, the roof, not my survey technique. I have the shadows of a dive bombing seagull on my survey, who took exception to my drone but after a few passes, he buggered off.

So now I've started to use it more as a camera platform and am trying harder to envisage what will make a good drone shot. I took two today which I'd been thinking about as possibilities and was just waiting for the right conditions, in fact I was actually out a bit late for one and perhaps a bit early for the other. The golf course shot would have benefited from a lower sun and the pit from a higher sun but still I'm seeing some promise from what I can do. I should probably have experimented more with manual exposure, especially for the pit shot but I'll do that next time.

I also ran both of these through Gigapixel AI, which made a negligible difference in these cases

I would hazard that most medium format users know what they gain over FF, which I would suppose to include things like dynamic range, tonality and how much the files can be pushed, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not sure those things are immediately obvious from reviews and sample galleries.

I have the poor man's version in M43 but I like the 4:3 ratio, always did since I used to use Mamiya 645's
