Broken DC Jack, thoughts on DIY repair or alternatives?

Yeah, I've been working to try to figure out cable management. I actually added an adhesive quick cable organizer to the bottom of the camera which has exactly the effect you mention, but getting it 12V compatible would eliminate the extra cable to the ground entirely, so probably a better solution. I think the jack was already failing when I added this, however, so the shock could have come earlier.

Will a different focusing screen help?

That looks like an autofocus screen, and doesn't appear to have the microprisms being discussed here. Is that what you're going for?

If you know enough to know about the white solenoid fix, surely you know that any number of people would take that camera off your hands. I hope "the bin" was metaphorical.

It pulls double duty: triggering focus for autofocus lenses using the AF button on the back of the camera instead of a shutter half-press, as well as triggering the catch-in-focus, focus confirmation etc. behavior (if enabled) for manual lenses.

Taken early morning on a K-S2 with an old 17mm fish eye: SMC Pentax 17mm F4 Fish-Eye Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

It's not tack-sharp throughout the scene (and the dog has motion blur, he was running all over the place), but there's not much in the way of bokeh.

The Peak Design one should work, since it should come with a plate to screw into the tripod mount. Edit, link:

Taken August 2017 at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, using a K-S2 with the 100/2.8 D-FA WR. The focus wasn't quite right, but I liked this composition a lot better than the others I took at the same time. The flower is "Showy Milkweed", which is pretty "wow" by itself, and the Monarch in the background gives a neat sense of depth.

K-S2 overheating and other issues

Hmm, neither of those sound familiar to me. I've never had a shutdown due to overheating. Unless you're shooting in an oven, that alone would make me think about returning it.

As a longshot, maybe try reset to factory defaults and update the firmware?

Pictures from the K-S2 process:

1. Green solenoid
2. Green solenoid de-soldered
3. White solenoid installed (not the best soldering job, but it works)
4. Mystery washer thing which dropped out of the camera body

Information on Businesses that offer cameras and lenses for rent

Adding my experience: I recently rented the FA 31mm Ltd. and the Sigma 35 Art from LensRentals.com.

Overall it was a good experience. I'd recommend having your shipment delivered for pickup at a FedEx location - mine went out for delivery on the chosen day, but never came ("No delivery attempt made"). I assume the FedEx guy ran out of time or something. Got it the next day.

I ended up using their purchasing option to keep the Sigma. I was pretty torn between the two lenses (both were amazing), but the purchase price quoted for the Sigma ended up being $640 while the 31Ltd was like $930. Both lenses were in what appeared to be perfect shape and functional order, and the biggest difference I noticed between their resulting images was the slight change in focal length.

Shipping back was easy, dropped off the package at a local mailer and was done.

I have a quick update on the 35 ART vs. 31 Ltd; I rented both lenses, and they just arrived about an hour ago. Some initial impressions:

1. Both are better lenses than I am a photographer
2. The AF in both is more precise than my 18-55 (noticed I may have a very slight front or back focus issue with the split-prism focus screen I installed)
3. The AF in the Pentax seems faster, but the silent AF in the Sigma is pretty cool
4. Edit: The quick shift feature on the sigma is nice.
5. The size difference is real, but I was expecting the Sigma to be a lot bigger. I've been shooting birds with an SMC 300m f/4, so both lenses seem manageable in comparison.
6. The 4mm focal length difference is more noticeable than I'd expected (not good or bad, just there)

I'll need to spend some more time playing with them this week.

Not entirely, you've convinced me to take another look at the 31. I'm thinking now I'll rent both for a week and then make a decision. For science!

I'm new here, and have no experience with mirrorless, but I love the 100/2.8 on my k-s2.

One of the first photos I took with it:
