Broken DC Jack, thoughts on DIY repair or alternatives?

I suggested epoxy since it is used to pot circuit boards. It is unlikely to damage anything and it isn’t conductive typically. The bond is very strong and often slightly flexible avoiding the fragile bond problems of superglue as well as the outgassing.

That might be a good solution.

It is a shame the jacks are not accessible without taking the entire body apart.

Thanks for posting; I now know I must be very careful with the DC jack....

I would be inclined to go with Number 3 if you have the skills to do it. It's a better long term fix IMHO.

Just to add, I always looped my cable connections to my astro gear to try to take some strain off the connectors, even zip tying the loops in place when the cables were heavy or could cause excessive strain. Though it is important to take account of the full range of the EQ mount when you do that even if you only plan a short session. You might fall asleep and the mount track further than you planned and when you woke up the cables had been torn from the devices they were plugged in to resulting in lots of tears and expense. You know; theoretically ;)

It is not unusual for items to take weeks or months to sell, and keep in mind that it's currently winter, so not as many folks are looking for a wildlife-centric lens as in warmer weather.

I have both the Pentax K50 and the K70. When I noted this problem on K70 I immediately tested the lens on the K50. The lens worked perfectly. As it should. No issues with the HSM. The lens isn't compatible with the K70.

I'm waiting on Sigma to respond to an email. Will see if they say anything. I'll be well upset if they say they don't support Pentax anymore.

Ugh. Try photographing the mount and contact the seller. Dude may have said "no returns" but he misrepresented the item.

I wondered for a moment whether we were going to get some shots through a Pentax endoscope, but this is much nicer and certainly less visceral to look at! :D

Yes, the DFA* 85mm should be just around the corner. I'm guessing that it's the next roadmapped lens that we will see.

One K-Mount PRIME to rule them all 2019

Having acquired a very nice copy of that lens a little more than a week ago, it may be a good contender for my choice for 1 prime but I am only now starting to get to know it. Had you asked me 2 weeks ago I would have said hands down my Sigma 300mm f/4 APO Macro but now I'm not entirely sure. It is a pretty good astro lens, which I do a lot of when the weather cooperates, and at the 1:3 magnification end really suits my style of shooting for plants and flowers.

Now that I think about it, that 300mm gets used almost exclusively at infinity or within a few inches of its minimum focusing distance. I should probably explore using it at other distances more.

So given that I would probably at this moment still say that Sigma 300mm f/4.

Just Aquired a Bunch of Old Manual Gear, Time for a K1?

Congrats on the acquisition! Trying out new lenses is always a lot of fun!

The K-1 is an awesome camera and would provide both the features and the sense of serious upgrade investment to motivate you to take your photography to the next level. The K-1 will make all your wide angle lenses truly wide and that's great for landscapes.

That said, the KP is a great camera, too. You'll get more reach with the 300 & 500 for distance nature shots on APS-C. Of course, if you keep the Kr (or use crop mode on the K-1), you'll have the APS-C reach advantage covered that way.

Enjoy the K-1 (or whatever you decide to buy)!

New Sony APS-C Sensor - 26MP

What would be nice with a hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder combined with on sensor PDAF is the possibility of using EVF with manual focus lenses with focus peaking displayed in the EVF. Would make manual lens focussing so much more certain of where focus falls. Especially good for longer focal lengths/heavier lenses where using live view at arms length is a pain, especially when magnifying the image.

Aperture block but green button availability

In failure mode the aperture mechanism on the body always moves to the full stop-down position, rather than the proportional movement to the set f-stop. The reason lens with aperture rings work is that the aperture ring mechanism stops the iris from closing down past the set f-stop.

Probably find a spot they frequently pass through, prefocus and just fire away when they're passing through. Trying to follow them is probably a fool's errand.

As many have written, anyone with a manual aperture AF lens (F, FA, etc.) should give you $50 + shipping for such a nice camera. I have more than 20 manual aperture AF lenses. Then again, I have a K-01.

I hope you have nothing but enjoyment from your K-70. As for the K-50, I would have taken it off your hands for the cost of shipping.* As far as cheap repair goes, that would have been nice, but c'est la vie.

Please take it out of the bin and sell it or send it to someone who can use it as is.

A camera with a dead aperture block mechanism can be fully enjoyed with M42, manual aperture K-mount, projector lenses, telescopes, microscopes, pinholes, etc. There's a world of optics that don't need a working aperture mechanism.

Your K-50 can live on!

The problem could be sensor related or AF module related.

If you manually focus using the viewfinder are the pictures sharp ?

If you use Live View does the AF work ?

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in these great posts is if you are using manual focus make sure you have your diopter setting set perfectly for your shooting eye. Even if you don't wear glasses you should adjust the diopter to maximize your chances to nail the manual focus. To set the diopter I first use live view zoom with focus peaking then switch back to the viewfinder and check the diopter setting. You might find you are slightly off on your manual focus. Of course this all needs to be done on a tripod and with a stationary target.

Hood doesn’t rotate. The filters are moved into place by carefully rotating the ring which is is accessible between the petals of the hood. It’s a great lens I use often.

This was a surprising challenge to host, as I wasn't expecting landscapes to be the primary topic for submissions. Thanks all so much for contributing, and without further ado,

The winner is SpecialK, because there's interest in the foreground, midground, and the background as well.
