Yes FA lenses, I don't complain about that. I just wish we had fast silent DA equivalents too. Smaller and lighter. Personally I'd be content with a 24 and a 33/35 each f1.8 or f2 and silent motor. Just what I'd wish for my K-50 now that I am spoiled by my 55-300 PLM in terms of fast and silent af and accuracy .

True. On the other hand a set of modern lenses that match the fullframe equivalent of say 35, 50 and 75mm or maybe 24mm too would be a good argument to buy into Pentax crop cameras. Part of the Fuji hype is their range of primes.

Dear Pentax, do what Fujifilm does - provide us with well built small, fast, silent 23/33/50mm DA primes with 9 rounded blades. Do it fast or I'm off to Fujifilm. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Hjortron, it's been a while since my last visit here. Your car could be a dismantled Morgan as they still have wooden frames underneath the sheet metal. ;)

Thanks Nuno. Love looking for Details. The circumstances have to be right, though. If I was only one foot shorter, I'd never noticed it.

You might try to take a picture without a lens attached or use a fully manual lens to sort out if it's the cameras electronics or the communication with the lens, just in case you were using a modern lens when you noticed the issue.

With the *ist D, the internal battery can be reached through a flap on the bottom of the camera and is easy to replace. End of the story. After that, Pentax went to the dark side of internal battery placement.

I took the freedom to apply some curve adjustments as well as desaturating your example. In the process some hard steps in tonality appeared, but I think I could bring out te streaks a bit, which are visible to the left of the red marks. Is this what you meant?

Thanks for sharing. The last one with the audience to the right is my favorite of the Rollins set.

My copy of the DA 55-300 shows the same issue. These days I've sent it in to be serviced and the answer is they cannot clean up the haze because it's caused by balsam cristallisation.

Yes, this looks similar. In between I've bought the plm anyway. Aside from these effects from reflections on water I'm very pleased with its IQ.

Tested the second copy the vendor had in Stock, results are the same. Would be great if you guys would give it a try with your copies and tell/show the results you got here. I asume by now it's a quirk of the HD 55-300 PLM.

This is how I did reproducing it: Focus on some highlights. Then pull the focus in front of them so that the highlights are slightly out of focus. Play around with defocussing until the phenomenon shows (if there is anything to show with your copy). When I first noticed it the lens was at 230mm f6.3 distance about 7 meters but I was able to reproduce it at 300mm f6.3 and two meters distance as well. The harsher the highlights the more noticeable the effect.

They're different and much more pleasing. ---------- Post added 06-07-23 at 08:37 AM ---------- I meet with the Vendor tomorrow to give back the lens. If he still has another copy I'll try to replicate the phenomenon. I will tell the outcome then here.

I'm comparing this 55-300 PLM copy with my smc 55-300 which has 3 blades less but never gave me anything like this in all the years of good use. As I do wildIife a lot this is not a rare situation with highlights as harsh for me. I'll test the other copy the vendor has in stock to see if I can reproduce the issue.

Thanks for this helpful reply. Actually the vendor has another copy he said, so I will try the other one too. I don't think I want a lens that gives me that kind of frills as an extra.

I know these hexagons well enough since I have a copy of the old smc 55-300 which has six blades, but it never was producing donut rings with a dot in the center. ---------- Post added 06-06-23 at 03:02 PM ---------- Thanks for your replies so far. I think I've found evidence that rendering oof highlights this way is just how the 55-300 PLM do. In this example there clearly are oof highlights shaped as rings with a dot in the centre. Now I get hungry  ---------- Post added 06-06-23 at 01:29 PM ----------
True, but rings and dots also appear in the much softer highlights in a dimly lit plastic bottle, same shape, just softer.
