Got some news! Time to wait for replacement one was about 1-2 months due to covid situation, so I took my lens straight to authorized repairshop to be chcecked. I was told that under zoom ring is a pin and a socket to transfer rotation from ring to zoom mechanism. During production levels of grease added to that socket varies from copy to copy and some lenses can have that wobble since new and all of them will develop this over time. It shouldn’t affect neither performance nor weathersealing and is just annoying to hear and feel. It shouldn’t affect durability of the lens. If it’s too annoying to stand it’s enough to justify the replacement or it can be easly corrected under warranty.

I’m using Zeiss Cleaning Fluid on my HD FA35 2.0 and SMC DFA 50 2.8 macro. As well on Irix 15mm, on all my filters, binoculars and my glasses- no problems with coatings after six months.

Sooo their reply was „hard to say”. It seems that by design every pens needs some play in that ring and amount of it will vary from copy to copy, and if wobbling is barely noticable the best way is to compare it with other copies of this lens. The amount you can see on my video sended to them was a bit strange but not alarming: Youtu.be |

As long as it’s common, it won’t affect lens performance, durability and handling, and it’s related to design, and not poor manufacturing, it is normal. I’m not an engineer and I don’t even know if its justified by lens construction, but everyone who responded here and all people I know have some play in zoom ring in this lens. I’ve emailed local Ricoh/Pentax warranty repairman to ask about it. Still waiting for response.

Thank you for your help!
Mine is firm and without any slightest play when locked, at 24-35mm wobbling is merely noticable and getting worse at 50-70mm.

We have two years warranty here in Poland, and I additionally bought two year insurance for that lens :)
All this topic is to check if lens even needs to be fixed. It seems that some play in zoom ring is comon and can be considered as design related, not bad fitting or faulty quality control.

Sad to hear that you are disappointed with it... as I asked few people I know who has the same lens it seems from their responses that this shake/wobble/looseness is not uncommon in this lens... as for now it doesnt seem to cripple its zooming function, and in normal use is merely noticable, so guess I won’t be fixing it anytime soon -unless more users here will tell it’s not normal with their copies. I had similar play in my DAL 50-200 but thats a kit lens, I dont expect those two to be quality comparable...

This movement is in zoom ring, focus ring is not affected.
Mine was new, it came two days ago, so it’s not usual wear of the lens... I’ll look at it and return it gets worse...

Hi there!
I’ve just got my first zoom for my K1 and I’m getting to know with it...
It’s superb lens, love the image quality (though It had to be callibrated for -5), it’s a tiny little bit softish at 2.8, but still better than 50mm macro and hd fa 35.
But after long walk I realized that when playing with zoom ring it has a little move in it, similar to this: You Tube |
src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nu8PmjffXZ8?controls=1" allowfullscreen> |
It zooms flawlessly, with pleasant feel but all my other lenses don’t seem to have such... mobility.
Is it common or should I consider it as wrong fitting?

Ok, then still K1 and K1mkII is great choice. I usually go up to 3200 without any fear of noise levels. Shake reduction allows me to go easly up to 1/10s handheld (i did some 1/4s and even 2s lap supported) if you don’t want to push ISO. Some example from K1mkII with home lightning (f2.8, 1/50s ISO 3200)

Wasn’t it discontinued shortly after K1mk II hit the stock? I remember seeing it in discontinued section year ago.

Always take into consideration that’s just my K1II problem, not the lens, however my dfa50/2.8 hits the target almost 100% of the time, my crop screwdriven lenses doesn’t seem to have that huge problem too... and microcallibration didn’t improve that ratio a bit. I’ll check that 35mm on my k70, maybe it would work better.

I’ve had two of those lenses so far, first one returned because of minor scratch on rear element. Both were sharp from f2.2/2.5 and razor sharp from 2.8. AF is bit disappointing, hitting at least 20% out of focus, even when shooting stills from tripod (when I write „out of focus” I mean minor ff/bf seen when cropped, but still annoying in portrait). AFC is out of the question with this lens. I still like and use this lens, it has good contrast, CA is not a problem from f2.5, it’s really lightweight, and works well as my everyday landscape/cityscape/portrait lens.

I’ve chose K1ii over KP mainly because:
1. Better screen, I use it often, love to make landscapes in portrait orientation with a lot of foreground, also easier when doing macro.
2. Battery life, almost two times longer in K1, important for me while backpacking for few days with no chance for charging it. Also less problem with changing battery in bad weather. When you add cost and weight of spare batteries and grip for KP, K1ii with 200€ discount was easy choice.
3. Astro tracer- always wanted to try it out!
4. Got a bit scared when few people started to complain about KP weather sealing, WR is the most important Pentax feature, however I always considered it as last resort and tried not to test it. I protect my camera with extra gear.
5. Image quality and resolution, I’m awful pixelpeeper.

Yeah, it was the clicking sound that I was mostly worried about. Good to hear that it’s not only mine tho ;)

Thanks, mate! It just seemed weird that body feels almost unnaturally well built without any cracking or wobbling parts except sd cover.

Hey guys, I’ve just found out that SD cover in my K1ii may be a little bit loose.
When locked it stays still in place but when I press it near „SD Xc” printing I can feel little play and hear clear clicking sound.
I’m concerned: is it normal and would it decrease weather resistance of my camera? After inspecting the seal inside it seems to be pressed against slots, it has visible mark on it.

I would reconsider purchasing CPL If you often use gradual filters as well. Irix 15mm on full frame will show big vignetting (completely black corners) when you mount IFH100 holder even on dedicated slim UV filter.

That’s for K1 mkII, on my K70 artifacts realted to movement are more severe, with a lot of green and yellow fringing, so it may look a lot worse in this scenario... I’ll chceck that some day.

Not always true, every single long exposure (up to 30s) went good with one condition: motion correction should be disabled. Each shot had a big boost in resolution, no artifacts seen as long as there is no real motion in frame (as grass on a wind), even in changing light conditions. In most cases exposures from 5 to 15s were ok, even with MC on, only few of them resulted with artifacts as mentioned, but there comes the DCU which allows to disable MC in postprocessing.
