Appreciate the input. Did the reply in the format you presented. I got a response "your message consists entirely of a quote. Please add something new before sending your reply". What in the he**. I am only trying to sell a camera. I guess they also want to have included something new like "by the way I am also offering an aircraft carrier for sale too". Of course I am not but this is pure nuts. Have you come across this issue and if so how did you handle it or get around it? Many thanks!!

Reminds me of the Gold Special LX. The material used to make the camera body and viewfinder cover wasn't designed to be plated with a precious metal. I have seen three of those offered for sale and they have some peel issues. Just hope Ricoh used a good quality paint. Fading black is pretty tacky!

What would your hope for a new Pentax Film SLR

I have a little used LX that I purchased from B&H back in 1994 when Pentax was closing out the last of the LX bodies. Think I paid them around $900 for it. They continued to offer accessories for the camera for a few years later until the remaining stocks were sold out. Not the first LX I owned. The first was purchased in 1983. Still have the motor drive and battery grip m in great condition that I use with the current body. What would I consider? I have large hands and a redesign hybrid of a cross between the SPF and the bullet proof electronics of the LX would be ideal. I last used the LX about two years ago and a 36 exposure roll of Fujichrome film cost and processing together was over $50. Think that cost will continue to increase due to ever tightening environmental laws covering the disposal of spent processing chemicals. And the worry is the lack of a decent network of film processing labs. Sadly the closing of labs led me to give up my beloved 6X7 system in the summer of 2009. Was beginning to have lab processing issues because as their customer bases shrank they overextended the processing life of the chemicals. They only work for so many rolls before they are played out and can no longer do their job correctly. My hat is off to the very limited group of individuals at this point that would be interested in a new SLR design. Ricoh is a highly respected company with a wide range of products. They saved the Pentax name and was one of the reasons they acquired it from Hoya. Hoya was under capitalized from the beginning and was never able to develop the technology required to meet the new digital systems coming out from Nikon and Canon. I am sure what decision Ricoh makes will be well researched with a full cost/benefit analysis. Maybe they will be able to introduce a new 35mm SLR that will be cost effective and provide the return according to their cost/benefit analysis. But a word of caution here- you would be beyond amazed at the depth of research done on concept products that for one reason or another never come to market. I would be highly satisfied if all they eventually decided to do was analyze the numbers of Spotmatics still kicking in photographers hands and did a cost benefit analysis on what parts to produce to keep them going.

Pentax announcement: Considering developing new film camera

I don't think the main reason Ricoh is canning the K1 is fewer buyers for digital cameras. The real reason is when manufacturers went from film cameras to digital cameras they lost sight of the KISS principle. Mainly Keep It Simple and Stupid. I use a K1 and the operating manual is over 100 pages of instructions. Now let's be totally honest here. I don't use about 95% of the functions indicated in the operating instructions and I consider myself an average user of the digital medium as I did with film. I have never come across a film camera owners manual that had more than 20 pages of actual use instructions. Why is the camera on a cell phone so popular? It is simple because the designers stuck to the KISS principle. Pick up the phone turn it on point at your subject and press the button to record the image. No poring over dozens of pages of program instructions to find what you need to do just that. I use a Canon scanner as needed and a Canon Pro 100 to make photo prints. Mind you from the K1 memory card and also scans of negatives and slides dating back over 55 years. Absolutely blows away the youngsters! And a lot of my relatives and friends too! Which explains why Ricoh is thinking about "specialized" digital cameras to cater to specific interests of individuals. All of the computer whiz programming has caught up with them and they don't appear really able to fix the programming in the K1 to make it meet the KISS requirement. Hell if they just dumbed down the digital camera offerings to begin with they and the other large players in the digital camera market probably would not be discontinuing cameras right and left. They must now consider starting from scratch. I like to use a solar telescope to image the Sun with a K1 specially modified to the infrared spectrum. Get real nice images but that sure as hell doesn't make me an astrophysicist by any means. Same with digital camera buyers. Very very very few are computer programming geeks that love to flip through 100 plus pages of programming options just to find the best sway to photograph their pet! Therein lies the issue. I wish Ricoh the best of luck on their new marketing approach. If you are aware about a decade ago they discontinued servicing of all screw mount cameras and many K mount cameras with the exception of the LX. They used the excuse of parts scarcity. Well at that time they weren't willing to have the most needed parts fabricated for those cameras. I think that was really a marketing ploy to force film users to switch to digital and they already had a substantial investment in that relatively new medium.

Hmmmmm......... I really wonder how far Ricoh will go with this "revival" of film cameras under the Pentax banner. As all reviewing this thread who worked for years with film cameras before switching to digital understand there were myriad issues with film that I for one am very happy to consign to the past. One of the issues to consider carefully is the environmental impact of the production of film and then the chemicals used to process the image. Digital may not have the "feel" of film and now at age 70 I have come to accept the limitations of digital but the nostalgia of film by youngsters who have never really had to work with film is quizzical to me. Digital cameras have far fewer parts than quality film cameras or any film camera in general. Asahi Optical Nikon Canon Minolta and the other players in the competitive Japanese camera manufacturing market relied on literally hundreds of individual producers of the parts that gave these film cameras their quality and longevity. Imagine attempting in the present Asian labor market to gather a group of small parts producers that could create the precision parts that were needed for a film camera of like quality. The costs would be prohibitive and most likely why Ricoh talks of a "limited market" and for good reason. If you are well heeled and looking for another status symbol by all means dive into film!! In short time after using a film camera I have no doubt you will again worship the images on your cell phone.

Would you have any contact information for this Norwegian gentleman? He may have enough information available that I could attempt a repair. I have recently acquired a number of repair parts for these drives. The working collection includes a pair of SP units, a pair of SPF Units, an SPII and a KX. Thanks!!

Spotmatic Motor Drive MD II

I have one of these units where the motor drive release pin assembly part number 0-02086 and 0-02087 has locked in the up position. The pin, when in the up position, automatically depresses the shutter release button when you attach the motor drive to the body. This is an interlock that when locked in the up position prevents release and firing of the motor drive unit. I have spoken with Eric Hendrickson and he won't touch these units and has no parts for them as well. Does anyone know of a repair source for these units or better yet does anyone know where the repair manual (not the parts list and exploded views of the motor drive which I have) that includes trouble shooting these units might be found? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide!
