EDIT: After much thought and reading all responses here carefully, I have decided to stay with Pentax and I have ordered a K1-MKII. I would like to thank everyone who responded. I received very useful advice and I sincerely appreciate it.

Thank you!

A hard decision....*

*

I’ve been a Pentax fan and user for well over a decade. I love the ergonomics, ruggedness, and control scheme of Pentax cameras. They are a joy for me to shoot with. I am currently using an old Pentax K20D.*

The K20D is a 14 Megapixel camera, and has served me well, but it’s terrible low light performance, terrible autofocus, and general out dated-ness has led me to decide it is time to upgrade, as I want to dip my toes into more professional work on the side.**

My current kit is:*

Pentax k20D*

*SMC Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4 - Full Frame*

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Telephoto - Full Frame

Pentax A50mm F2 - Full Frame Vintage

Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 AL – APS-C*

Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Lens - APS-C

Out of these lenses, I love the 50mm, and like the 35mm. The sigma is also a nice lens that I don't often use.

*I am considering a few cameras. The Pentax K1-Mk ii, the Pentax K-3 iii, the Sony A7R III, the Sony A7 IV*

Reasons I love Pentax:*

Optical viewfinder: I PREFER this over EVF. I’m making no claims that it is better, just my preference. It makes me FEEL more connected to the process in a way I prefer and it brings me joy. I understand the EVF has advantages and I respect that. I am also a wood worker, so an apt comparison for me would be a power planar vs a hand planar. The power planar is faster, more consistent, and more precise. It’s great for cookie cutter results delivered in the same way every time for production line type work. The hand planar is less consistent, takes more skill and practice to use well, but creates a more intimate and connected experience making for work I find more joyful and fulfilling. Both are great tools, but if I had to choose one, I enjoy using the hand planar more. It just makes me happy, and that’s important to me.**

Rugged weather proofing: The K1 is a tank. It’s a go anywhere in any sort of weather camera. I love this, as I enjoy landscape, travel, and nature photography, sometimes in very extreme conditions.**

Ergonomics: I love the ergonomics and control placement of Pentax cameras. It feels natural to me and they fit my hands well. I am a large man in my early 40’s. I have large hands, I am strong. When I backpack I don’t mind slinging 80 pounds on my back if I need to. The size of the Pentax K1 and large DSLR’s is an ADVANTAGE to me. The weight of the camera and lenses means nothing to me. I often see size and weight touted as an advantage to mirrorless. This is great for smaller or older folks who have a hard time with large tools, but that is not me. I hate small tools because it’s very hard to use them comfortably with the size of my hands. Maybe this will change when I’m 70, but for now small, light weight cameras to me are a big disadvantage. If I need to go small, I can use my phone.*

Lenses: Pentax makes some fantastic lenses. I’d like to get the 85mm 1.4, the 15-30mm, and the new 100mm macro.**

I love the 36 MP sensor of the K1, I love it’s size, ergonomics, high iso performance, and super rugged build. I can get it with the battery grip for 1799 and I already have a nice 50mm to go on it. I find astrophotography as a new hobby to be very interesting.*

Drawbacks:*

Smaller used market. I’ve looked at used K1 MKII and the price difference of used vs new is so small I would never make that choice.**

Poor autofocus.**

Questionable future of the system.**

I’m irritated as hell that the K1 MK III isn’t a thing yet. Pentax moves so slowly and I hate that about them.**

Alternative choice:*

Sony A7R III – on sale right now for 1999$*

I like the look of this camera. 42MP, great autofocus, more varied lens choices, though that doesn’t always mean BETTER lens choices.**

Downsides for me are EVF, battery life, overheating issues, less rugged, and small size which will be difficult with my large hands. I also don’t like the layout of buttons and dials. I don’t mind chimping a little as a consequence of keeping the OVF. I don’t like to shoot with live view, I’ll never use that on either camera most likely.*

The biggest upside to me is the autofocus.**

That said, I’m not a closed minded curmudgeon. I’m open to considering possibilities.**

What will I be doing?**

I’m going to be embarking on a second career in which I would like to shoot portraits (Family, headshots, engagement, seniors etc.) I may dabble in product and real estate photography. I will shoot landscapes to perchance sell at art shows. I will shoot candid's for my own pleasure. I have no interest in weddings or sports (other than my sons soccer games). I have absolutely no interest in video production of any kind. Only stills.**

I do not need to pay bills with this endeavor. I’m fortunate enough that it’s simply going to be supplemental income chasing a dream. I could make 0$ and suffer no consequences. It’s a passion project.**

*

I’m really looking to get feedback from other photographers on the fitness of these systems for my uses.**

Will the K1 autofocus well enough for me to get some nice shots at my kids soccer game? Because if it will that’s great. Everything else I do will be slow paced. Is the autofocus on the K1 much better than the old k20D?**

Does the Sony have more advantages that I’m not seeing? It has a slightly higher MP count, better autofocus and much better video. However, I have no interest in video.**

*

Looking back at what I’ve written, it seems like the Pentax is still a good choice for me, but it’s a big investment and I’d just love some discussion.**

*

Thanks!**

Buying either into a new system or into a full frame system will mean buying new lenses as most of yours are K-mount APSC. If you want to re-use your lenses with a new body, then you are looking at a K70/KF/K3iii (or a used K5 series/K3 series/KP). Given your needs the KF or K70 or a used more premium model are probably perfectly fine. This would also leave money left over for another lens or so.

Even the K5 handled soccer games very well. I used it for years. The K-1ii is of course a huge improvement over that, so coming from the K20 it's chalk and cheese.
The K-1ii's optical viewfinder is bliss. If you like OVF like I do and dislike looking at a little EVF screen, then the K-1ii is the logical choice in my view.

Or, you can stump up the big bucks and get a new K-3III. I'm sure that's a big step up too. Or, wait for the next K-1 which, I'm sure, will incorporate tech from the K-3III in FF format. And will be even pricier. So, if budget is a consideration, then the K-1ii is the way to go in my view.

At this point, still image IQ is limited by light levels on Earth -- the number of photons per second per pixel creates a statistical process that limits IQ. Even if the read noise of the sensor were reduced to zero, images would still be noisy.

The biggest opportunity for improvement in still image IQ would come from replacing the Bayer filter design with some clever way of getting good red, green, and blue data from every pixel. Sigma's Foveon was one approach but it suffered from very poor DR because of how poorly the RGB layers in the sensor actually separated R, G, & B. Some older high-end video cameras used a 3-chip design with separate R, G, & B sensors that were carefully aligned behind a clever color-separation system but that design is quite bulky.

I'd also buy a true hybrid OVF/EVF camera in a heartbeat. I love the OVF of a DSLR for most composition tasks but would like if the post-shot image review flashed in the OVF eyepiece or if live view could be sent to the eye piece. There are at least four different architectures for doing this and hopefully Ricoh will implement one of them.

I'll run through my really rather simple procedure for this image...

One piece of A4 copier paper, in an "S" curve to provide a seamless background on the window ledge. Place the subject directly on the A4 paper. Tracing paper attached to window with masking tape to act as large source diffuser. I usually use a large pop up collapsable reflector on the White side, to bounce light back towards the window and subject. Sturdy tripod, camera and “Femme Fatale” Pentax-A 50mm F2.8 Macro.

I've included below the original shot, which I thought was too sharp and detailed (playing about with K1 pixel shift). So the shot directly below got washed through Photoshop... blur, softened glowed etc. etc.

Here is the image posted recently, the PP'd one for comparison.

Original Shot Image, pixel shifted.

I have used a very similar step up for all these other product type shots shown below.

"HM The Queen" SMC Pentax 500mm F4.5 lens cap and "Street Lady" Pentax-A 28mm F2.8

Toyota Landcruiser Piston

"Special Lady” Pentax-A 50mm F1.2 and memory cards.

“Friendly Lady” Pentax-A 24mm F2.8 and "Street Lady" Pentax-A 28mm F2.8.

"Retro Lady" SMC Pentax-M 40mm F2.8 and hood.

I hope this better explains my modus operandi.

And we typically give flu the freedom to spread throughout the population rather than take any steps to limit it. Thus, we allow the flu infect about 25-50 million Americans each year.

How many people would COVID-19 kill if we let it infect 25-50 million Americans? So far, it's killed 34,000 people per million infections. Even if you assume that the undertesting of Americans means there's 9 untested COVID-19 cases for every tested one, that's still a fatality rate of 3400 deaths per million infections* or 85,000 to 170,000 deaths. BTW, if we allowed COVID-19 to spread without countermeasures (either the current lock-downs or Asian-style test-and-trace), COVID-19 would infect a lot more than 25-50 million people because, unlike the flu, there's no vaccine and no one is immune from previous exposure to this virus. It would inevitably spread to about 200 million Americans (and cause 680,000 deaths) before herd immunity effects cause the infection to exhaust itself.

So, yes, COVID-19 is at least 10X the flu without social distancing measures.

*Note: 3,400 deaths per million infections estimate is in line with the estimated 3,700 deaths/million infections found in a careful German study that tested 80% of a town's population for both ongoing or previous COVID-19 infection.

P.S. 3,400 deaths per million infections assumes the hospitals have the capacity to treat everyone who has a serious (but not fatal) case of COVID-19. If we let the number of active cases overwhelm the healthcare system, the death rate can easily go up by a factor of 2 to 4. That's why the "worst case" scenarios put the US death toll in the millions because there was no way the hospitals could handle tens of millions of patients which is what would happen without "flatten the curve" efforts that the US has taken.

Here's a image of a street view car (with its "tower" folded down) that was parked not far from home for a while. The camera is a multi-lens contraption.

The image is taken with a Theta :D You can pan around in it on Flickr.

I believe they edit out the car from the images, should be fairly easy to automate.

Just holding the camera above you doesn't make you disappear, just become smaller (using a selfie stick here).

I've read quite a few articles from people who finally decided to quit social media after what they considered wasting time for many years. Some social psychologists even predict that facebook will die due to having a business models based on selling user privacy data to third party companies. What the world will be like when social media will have gone bankrupt? Or how will camera forums be transformed so that users don't feel like they are a waste of time? One of the thing I'm wondering, given how much time is spent, is if forums are only for retired people , or if not using internet forum will give the active professional a competitive edge over those who spend time on internet forums.

The rumour you started here on PentaxForums where you implied that Ricoh will lose the right to use the Pentax brand and which resulted in several other camera forums and bloggers going into a froth and referring to you as a "trusted source" and which led to Ricoh issuing a denial that they will lose the rights to use the Pentax brand.

That rumour. :)

Which was refuted by Ricoh here and elsewhere with the statement:

"Hoya is the owner of the PENTAX trademark, but there are no restrictions or limitations attached for RICOH to use the PENTAX brand in the camera business. We will continue to offer the PENTAX brand products including new items."

Olympus closure is near, can happen in less than 8 months - Personal View Talks

I wouldn't place much if any credence in the rumour... rather, it seems like one man's opinion of what might happen. That said, there's no doubt Olympus is feeling the pinch like every other brand, and convincing the buying public to choose micro four thirds over APS-C or full frame is becoming increasingly challenging.

I certainly hope Olympus continues for many years to come...

New information about new flagship's selling date

Sorry for the confusion.

The photo you posted from Tanaka san's blog shows the tape rather sloppily reapplied where as the Pentax release photos show carefully applied tape. That tells me that the tape has been removed by someone who was curios about the name and then it was re-applied after looking at the name. The culprit who removed the tape could have been Tanaka san.

As for the other paragraph it was regarding Karen's post that the release date would be much later than most expect. to paraphrase, you said the camera was pretty much complete but probably needed the firmware tweaked to complete the system.

I hope this clears up your confusion.

Pixel level quality on my K-5
Posted By photoptimist

The sharpness of the photos you see are almost certainly partly due to using the sharpest lenses under the best conditions. But the real source of the sharpness almost certainly involves post processing. Even the best of lenses tend to be a little fuzzy at 50 LPM (line-pair per millimeter) and the sensor on the K-5 can resolve down to 100 LPM. The Bayer filter found in virtually all digital cameras also creates some pixel-level blur.

The point is that even with a "sharp" lens, the RAW image will be fuzzy at the pixel level. Post processing is the only solution.

Look into getting a 50mm lens. Stopped-down, a modest prime can get really nice results but still require post processing if you pixel peep.

Nope, no sign of doom this time either. And yes, I'm quite confident the APS-C flagship will be mentioned when the time comes.
