I will not be using the Adapter F with a flash gun. I will be using its PC-socket connector to trigger the transmitter of my Neewer RT-16 Wireless Remote Flash Trigger. Note that the foot of the Pentax O-GPS2 has no pin for the center contact (flash trigger contact) of the Pentax K-70 hot shoe - there is no conflict between the O-GPS2 and the RT-16 transmitter.
I will not be operating in bulb mode - I will be using much shorter exposures and even shorter manually selected flash durations from my modified Vivitar 283 flashes.

A 2021 review on this site states that, despite Pentax claims online and in the manual, his Adapter F works fine with his O-GPS1. I see no reason why it would not work with the O-GPS2, which has the same pinout as the O-GPS1. ---------- Post added 03-01-24 at 05:42 PM ---------- Now that I have taken a closer look at the Pentax Adapter F I don't like the fact that it does not clamp into the hot shoe the way that the O-GPS2 does. Perhaps a better kluge would be to kluge a Flashpoint Pentax hot shoe foot onto an Adapter F so it will clamp solidly to the K-70 body. Then the adapter and the GPS can always be left on the body.

I am looking for a way to trigger a remote flash with my O-GPS2 mounted on the hot shoe since the K-70 does not have a Prontor/Compur (PC) flash socket. Has anyone used the Pentax Adapter F for this purpose or a similar adapter from another manufacturer? Something similar to the Pixel TF-322 would be ideal if it came in a Pentax hot shoe version. If push comes to shove I may have to kluge a Flashpoint Pentax hot shoe foot onto a Pixel TF-334 because the latter looks like its top contacts will work with the O-GPS2 foot.

A printed copy of the manual was packed with the O-GPS2.

I just tested my AF160SA on my K1000, and it always flashes. I have tried it with with every combination of:
1) Flash in program or manual mode
2) Aperture in automatic or manual mode
3) Body with or without metering battery
That yields eight combinations and the flash works in all of them. Are you sure that the batteries in the flash are good? If not, put a new pair of alkaline cells in it. Note that the manual warns against using NiCads (does anybody use NiCads for anything nowadays? I don't.). It is possible that the Program/Manual switch in your flash or in the OP's flash is defective. Although my AF160SA is more than 30 years old it has seen very little use. It is also possible that the OP's flash has a different problem, such as bad battery contacts or a defective flash capacitor. ---------- Post added 02-21-24 at 01:44 PM ----------
I will have to investigate the functions of the second and third contacts, but they are both floating on my K1000 shoe.

I wanted to know which lens you used because it might be possible that having the aperture in automatic mode might be different than having the aperture in a manual setting. Now that I know that you also have the smc Pentax-A 1:2 50mm I will try some tests. ---------- Post added 02-21-24 at 01:10 PM ----------
There are two other control contacts on the AF160FA foot.
I just measured my AF160SA at 5 volts. ---------- Post added 02-21-24 at 01:21 PM ----------
I have not disassembled my K1000 to check the flash triggering, and the K1000 manual does not mention whether it uses mechanical switch or electronic switch triggering.

I agree with Lord Lucan. Which lens were you using for the test? Please give us all of the camera and flash settings for that test so we can try to duplicate the failure.

I used a K-1000 with an AF160SA for nearly 20 years.
Which lens are you using? Please give us all of the camera, lens, and flash settings for a test where you "set the settings up correctly, but it doesn't seem to sync up."

Are you using major brand batteries or off-brand batteries? I have no problem with battery life in my O-GPS2, which is turned on when I need to tag and otherwise has the battery removed. I easily get the specified ~5 hours with a major brand alkaline battery.

I am glad that you like it. I work with broadcast equipment which often costs more than any Pentax camera, so I have to be very careful in choosing the chemicals which I use. I was a chemistry major before I found radio and switched to mass communications, so I may have a slight advantage in choosing chemicals.:)

Thanks to Mrlocksmith and AstroDave for the photos. I have begun to get ready for the April eclipse, which will require a road trip of a day to get to the path of totality (I'm about to book a hotel room for two nights). From the settings of those photos it looks like I will need more glass than my smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3. I will probably need my Rokinon 650Z 650-1300mm f/8-16. I need to determine which lens I will use because I will have to buy an eclipse filter for that lens. I plan to make some test shots of the next full moon to determine which lens and focal length I will use.

In the Pentax forums photogem wrote the book on that repair. I followed his directions and successfully repaired my K-70.

I agree. 12800 is actually not terribly high compared to the max ISO of 102400. I have my K-70 set to not go beyond 6400 automatically.

I repaired my K-70 early this year with one of the eBay solenoids mentioned by Not a Number (NaN, are you a free man?). The repair was not difficult, but requires a good quality jeweler's screwdriver set which includes Phillips screwdrivers, a low- or controlled-temperature soldering iron with a fine tip, experience in soldering very small and somewhat finicky things, steady hands, patience, and good organization to get all the parts back in their original locations. For me (at 72) it was a piece of cake, but I have 60+ years of experience in electronic repair and YMMV.

My old Pentax AF160SA which I bought for my K1000 has a trigger voltage of 4.8 volts. It has a guide number of 16, an angle of illumination matching a 35mm lens (my most used prime on my K-70), and a 6 second recycle time. The SA flashes have ready and mode pins and are program flashes which control the f stop. The AF160SA works quite well on my K-70 considering that it is not P-TTL.

The inexpensive Neewer radio triggers which I use with my Vivitar 283s work great, but all they have to do it trip the center pin of each flash as I adjust the duration of each flash manually.

I use a number of Vivitar 283 flash heads (original Japanese production), but unlike many photographers I am a retired professional electronics technician with a well-equipped shop. As a rule I don't pay more than $10 for a 283 (usually $5) and I can easily repair them.

My viewfinder cover has arrived. It was listed as a "Pentax M Viewfinder Cover" and described as fitting a K-1000. It looks perfect on the K-1000 but is not quite tall enough on the K-70. I will add a narrow strip of rubber to the bottom, test its ability to keep direct sunlight out of the viewfinder, and report back.

It appears that the viewfinder cover for the K-1000 will fit the K-70 and KF. My K-70 viewfinder hood fits fine on my K-1000. I have a K-1000 viewfinder cover on the way.

I may make one, in case I want to try long exposures with ND filters on my K-70. I almost always have my O-GPS2 GPS unit mounted on my hot shoe, so I keep the hot shoe cover in an unused SD card pouch under the lid of my Lowepro camera bag. If I make a viewfinder cover it can be stored in the same pouch.

I have a K-70, as does the OP. When did Pentax start supplying a viewfinder cover with the K-70? Neither the OP or myself have one.

I bought my K-70 in 2018 after more than 50 years as an SLR owner, the last 35 of those as a Pentax owner. I wanted a DSLR that I could grow into and not grow out of, and the K-70 more than fits that description. Even after 5 years I am still learning new tricks with the body. I have spent more on glass in 5 years than I spent on the body, but I knew that was going to happen. I started with just the body and my old Pentax SLR glass, but now own two primes and a zoom which are all automatic, plus a big manual zoom used only on a tripod. I am fortunate to have an excellent local Pentax dealer because I like to try glass before spending hundreds of dollars on it.

You can Google "Pathfinder." Anyone asking a question here who has the kit shown in my sig probably doesn't need basic advice. There are plenty of members here with decades of experience. I started using a loaner Hasselblad and a school-owned Speed Graphic in the late '60s, used my Instamatic and my dad's ca. WWII Leica for years before that, and got my first SLR in 1969. Some experienced members just have a new bit of kit that they may be having a problem with, and may need some advice from members who have experience with that bit of kit or something similar.
