I see! (That’s funny,,,). My problem is small field of view and high parallax, yours is clearly different.

The huge depth of field of short physical (not equivalent) focal lengths is what makes the Q’s so interesting for Makro - that plus the magnification effect of the tiny sensor. so much to play with and learn.

For up to about 1500mm equivalent fl my Nikon P900 beats the Q and a 200mm Tamron pretty handily, above that the P900 just gives magnification, the resolution drops.

Thanks Lowell,

I have a “box” type magnifying cover for the back. My problem is not so much focus or framing, but quick location of small targets within 2 - 10 meters. The parallax makes it hard to “point” the camera due to the small field of view of anything over about 3X magnification - 15mm focus length, so the 50mm f4 Pentax macro up through the 70mm Tamron C mount and the 90 and 200 mm Tamrons are a pain. My results using my “open sights” method are OK so far. Up close for bugs and such, the parallax would make a red dot optical sight of limited use since the displacement of the sight’s aim point and the center axis of the lens from the target changes a lot with distance changes that close in.

I went completely “Q-mad” and got an original and a Q7, then all the zooms plus the 01 and 03. Then I had to have the K adapter and some lenses to hook up to it - oh yes - C an D mount adapters, a Tamron industrial 70mm C mount and some Kearn Palliard D’s.

The long lenses - the Tamron C and Tamron 90mm SP2 Makro and 200mm close focus are a bit to handle when trying to focus stuff nearby outside with the dim viewfinder and the small field of view. I found that if I sight along the top deck of the camera at a point between the right edge of the hot shoe and the shutter release the target is pretty much right there - up close a hair lower because of parallax, but close enough.

Worth getting a Pentax MX-1 if you already own a Q?

Have a Q and a Q7 and all the zoom lenses plus the 01. Last weekend I found an MX-1 locally.

All of them are great fun - Matthias nailed it when he said that he need both!

I love the weight and grip of the MX-1. Even in brilliant AZ sun, if you turn the screen brightness to max in all three channels, it’s good enough to compose (if you started out with a Brownie Hawkeye).

Just got a Q and a Q7, along with the 01,02,03,06 and 08 lenses plus 3 Kern Palliard 8mm’s, a Yashinon 8mm Cine and a Tamron 70mm C mount insustrial viaion lens. This shot is with the Tamron - baby hummingbird today here in Arizona.
