I was at Best Buy the other day helping my mother in law shop for a P&S (she's ordering a W60 tomorrow). There was a lady (40's) next to us talking to salesman asking all sorts of tech questions. She obviously knew what she was doing with a camera. Then, she moved onto the next model and it came with a free "armor" pack, as you call it, in the color of her choice. She asked no tech questions, but asked how much additional colors are, what colors are available and then took that camera. I think you're on to something.

I am wondering where shake reduction really comes into play. For instance, indoors shooting people it wouldn't matter would it? If I am at a low enough shutter speed for camera shake, then it would be low enough that my subject would have to be extremely still? Outdoors in landscape photography, wouldn't I just be carrying a tripod?
Maybe I am all wrong, I am just curious what type of scenes that Shake Reduction really comes into play.
Thanks,
Jeremy

I wonder if the changes are hardware or programming? i.e. the K20D could see updates via a new firmware download.

Hm, I can read my cell phone from a greater distance than 12". I can see the LCD clearly at any normal distance (close or far) but the lines in the viewfinder are far from clear when the diopter is on it's center point. All the way to the right and it's crystal clear.
I hate to think of myself as aging, but I guess, as someone said, it's better than the alternative.

What does the diopter indicate if you have to go +1 or -2? i.e. is +1 far sighted/near sighted? I find to have clear lines, I have to move my diopter all the way to the right :-( My brother can use my camera and it's clear lines right in the center (where his Sony A700 is set as well), so it's not the camera, it's me :-(

From the "https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-news-rumors/44200-white-k2000-km-announced.html" thread, I understand we are all excited for Pentax to reach into new markets and gain more popularity. I think we all know that will be good for everyone who uses a Pentax camera. So, how can we, as Pentax users, help promote Pentax?
1. Talk about Pentax with your family/friends (recommend)
2. Blog about your Pentax camera/gear
3. Include a tag about "Shot with Pentax K20D/K10D, K100, etc..." below your photos with your online photo gallery
4. When at local camera stores, play with a new non-Pentax camera and say, "It's nice, but I really like XYZ about my Pentax, I think I'll pass. Thanks!" (then proceed to what you were there for in the first place)
5. When you purchase a product, write a good (don't lie if it's not good) review of the product you purchased at the stores online feedback
6. People who are very good photographers, post some "How-to" videos on YouTube showing how to do XYZ with your Pentax camera
I am sure there are many, many other good ideas how we can help. Let's discuss some ideas!

I guess from my shopping experience. That's all. I have no inside information at all. I would like to read where there are going to be new camera releases this upcoming year.

I was speaking to if Pentax did not release a new advanced camera by then. Meaning, that if they did I would upgrade. Of course I do not expect Pentax's old technology to compare to Canon's/Nikon's current technology. But, if the K20D *was* Pentax's current technology in 3 years... I might be paranoid, but I am that way because of my recent shopping experience that I posted to above. Sorry. I think I said things in a way that has not conveyed my intent well.
It's good to hear someone finally agree's. Most people are all for it thinking it's going to change the world. I would be much, much more for it if that were the case (not limited).

I'll finish up with my personal Pentax story. I am a new Pentax owner. I've never owned anything Pentax until about 2 months ago. I am a technical/well informed buyer. I did tons of research online before ever going out of my door to look at anything. I originally decided on a Sony because my brother is a big time Minolta (now Sony) user and has all kinds of gear. So, I went to the local Best Buy type stores and then camera stores. Everywhere, I saw Sony, Canon and Nikon cameras. I compared prices, looked at how supportive the store was/wasn't, etc...
In all the stores I voiced my view that the Pentax was better IQ and all around better camera, what do you think about Pentax? Every single person I talked to said "Do not buy Pentax." There was not one exception! Even stores that had Pentax P&S cameras said "Do not buy Pentax."
I wound up buying a Pentax after owning a Sony A300 for a short period in time and comparing it to the K20D manual online that I had, sample RAW files I found, etc... Local camera stores have a great 10 day return policy. I took them up on that deal and then purchased my K20D from B&H.
Until the camera stores, the Best Buys, Targets and Walmarts start carrying Pentax, I think we will not get very far in market share. A white K2000 or not. In fact, I think the White K2000 is a waste of time *until* Pentax is in Walmart/Target/Best Buy. *Then* I think the White K2000 is an *awesome* idea. Prior to that point? Useless.

That quote was taken out of context a bit. The whole quote is "If they begin to focus on Walmart and forget advanced/professional photographers, I am going to be highly disappointed. Sure, my K20D is fantastic now, but in 3 years it will not compare to the Canon/Nikon cameras."
I was voicing a slight concern, not knocking going into new markets, attracting new cutomer base, etc... I for one am for new modern colors, getting more people involved.
The thing that concerns me is I do not thing this white K2000 is going to do a single thing. It's a limited edition (more $$$ and only available in very small numbers) and it's only going to be available on normal photographer outlets (Adorama, B&H, etc...).
The market that everyone says this camera is for, it will not reach! Why doesn't anyone see that? A chic woman who wants a DSLR and thinks this white camera is cool will never see it or know it exists! The reason? It's not in Walmart or Target, where she will be shopping for one. She is not going to be going online, researching the market, looking at professional photography stores such as Adorama and B&H.
Besdies, being a limited edition, how much market share can they take, even if *every single woman who could* bought one?

A woman concerned about style is not going to be shopping for her first DSLR online at B&H or Adorama. They are going to be shopping for their first DSLR at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, possibly a local camera store like Ritz (who doesn't stock Pentax). There, they will see Canon/Nikon and buy. To hit this supposed niche market, they need to 1. Make it a normal edition (i.e. you can get the K2000 in either Black or White) all the time for the same price, 2. Get it placed in Walmart, Target, Best Buy. If they do not do that, they have done nothing that will gain them any market share.

I have not done macro work before. Any suggestions on the best macro lens (most versitle) to start working with and learning some macro photography? I know in the marketplace their is a 35mm DA 2.8 Limited that is tempting but want a bit of input first.
I do not know the benefits when doing macro work to a 35 vs. 100.
Thanks for any input,

I am all for Pentax getting more revenue in the doors and for hitting a broad market, however, I've mentioned before and have had no resonse... How is a limited edition (read $$$) going to match their target (at least what we think is their target)? Also, their target (consumer women?) is not going to be shopping at Adorama or B&H for a camera, they are going to be at Walmart. So, how is this camera doing anything good except for the few who like the color white?
If they truly wanted to target women, great, come out with a Standard Edition K2000. You can get it in White or Black. Sell for the same price and sell them in Walmart. That would hit the target. All the talk of Pentax selling to women with this camera seems very misguided. I can't see at all how that's going to happen.

I can't see how this would be as it is a limited edition (thus $$$) and also not in Walmart. The people it seems to be targeted toward are not going to be shopping online at Adorama or B&H. I'd be happy to be proven wrong. Due time will tell I guess.

Samsungian, I am not questioning you, but... how is that (price) going to attract new comers? Also, being a limited edition how will that attract new comers? Doesn't seem to smart to me.
