Question about Pentax MX

Correct, as long as I'm in the shade, or indoors, I can see all 5 lights. The minute I get into the sunlight though the "christmas tree" goes black. I know it's a strange problem.

Yes, I've been considering getting in touch with him as the only thing I could think of was the led lights were just getting old and dimming.

Thanks for the reply! It's not the batteries, I've got 2 new 357 batteries in it and they say they are the equivalent to SR44's. I've tried with number 2, and the lights still blanked out in sunny conditions like I described.

I'll try cleaning the contacts, they appeared clean, but since I haven't tried that I'll give it a try.

Thanks!

Question about Pentax MX

I just recently purchased a Pentax MX, and it is an impressive camera; however I have encountered a problem. Everything on camera works, however unless I'm in a shady spot I can't see the light meter, and even is a shady area when I point the camera at a sunlit area the led lights go out. Could the led lights be getting dim from old age? Other than the light meter problem it's a great camera.

It'll be awhile before I'll be developing anything, but I thought I'd add a few old pictures I took. Normally I wouldn't have set foot on d***edyankee soil, but since this was bought and paid for in blood I made an exception. I don't have a film scanner so I scanned prints on a flatbed scanner, and these are the only ones that came out good enough to post (the quality of the actual prints is excellent). I reckon the quality not being good on the others was due to the fact that I was scanning prints rather than negatives, or that's my best guess anyway since the prints were excellent. I don't remember what State the monument in the first two pictures was for (been too long ago), but the last two pictures were of the Confederate lines at the time of Pickett's Charge. The camera was a Pentax K1000 and the film was Fuji (probably 400, but again too much time has passed for me to say for sure).

Are the Focal brand name lenses any good?

I used it for just about anything at the time. I was a cop back then and took it with me to work quiet a bit, got a very good picture during a thunderstorm one night there was very heavy lightning; I shut off the patrol car so there would not be any vibrations, set the camera on the dash with the shutter speed set to 1 second and waited for a really big bolt of lightning (which actually turned out to be several bolts of lightning at the same time) and hit the shutter button when it came. Also got a very good close up of my grandma at Thanksgiving in 1988 with it. I took a lot of pictures of various things with it, but unfortunately my ex-wife got off with all those pictures with the exception of the one of my grandma, which I had enlarged to 8x10 and it's hanging on the wall now.

There's no danger of me using it on a digital camera. I use a camera for photography, and the "camera" on my phone I'll use to take pics where I just want to show someone something real quick.

The 28 - 70 Sears lens I used to have must have been and exception as well because it took very good pictures.

That's what I'm looking for right now; maybe after I get back into it more I'll look for something better but for now getting the job done is good enough.

No worries there, I prefer all manual cameras. I've got a really nice K1000 SE now, but I intend to get an MX when I can find one that is in very good shape.

I doubt that I'll be enlarging anything more that 8x10. I've got a picture of my grandma that I took with my old K1000 that had a 28 - 70 lens on it (one of the best pictures I ever took) and it enlarged to 8x10 and it looks as good as the print I got when I got that roll developed.

I know primes are better, but I'm looking for the flexibility a zoom gives you, and I don't want to be carrying around a lot of extra weight for reasons I've explained in previous replies. I'll end up getting some primes too, but I won't be carrying around many of them.

My first 35mm, other from the cheap Kodak plastic 35mms sold back in the 1970s, was a K1000 bought from Sears in 1987 which had a 28 - 70 zoom on it, and while it may have been an exception, it took excellent pictures. I explained my reason for wanting this size lens in my reply to the first person that replied to my posts so I won't duplicate the reasons again, but sufficient to say this is the size lens I'm looking for; perhaps I'll get lucky and find another good one. Also, I don't have a lot of extra money to work with now (I'm disabled, and eat up with arthritis from old injuries).

Thanks for the reply, and apologies for taking so long to respond, but I heat with wood and ran low so that took priority over everything else.

T main reason I'm looking at the 28 - 70 is because my first camera (a Pentax K1000 bought from Sears in 1987 came with a Sears 28 - 70 lens on it), and I found that size lens ideal for walking around with (not too long and heavy, but it gave you the option of zooming in or out some), and the lens took excellent pictures. That camera and lens were destroyed in a house fire in 1996, and I've just recently got another K1000. Up until now the only 35mm camera I've had was a point and shoot Bell&Howell (and btw, I only shoot film, digital to me just isn't photography). Another reason I'm wanting a 28 - 70 lens is because I've got 5 compression fractures in the thoracic area of my back, and I don't want to carry around a lens that will add a lot of extra weight on my neck or it'll end up setting my back off. I've got a 70 - 210 lens, but that's more weight that I'd prefer to carry hanging from my neck.

Maybe this will help y'all out, here's the url to one of the lenses I'm looking at: Focal Compact Macro Auto Zoom 3.5-4.5 / 28-70 mm Lens Ricoh PK KA Mount (LN-106) | eBay I'm trying to get back into photography after being out of it for longer than I care to think, and I'm trying to build up a decent set of lenses, not real expensive because I'm disabled now, but lenses that will make decent pictures.

Hello, I've located a couple of Focal brand name lenses on ebay, and I'm not familiar with this brand so I was wondering if they were good quality lenses. They look very much like the lenses Sears sold in the 1980's, and they were made in Korea as were the Sears lenses. Any information y'all can provide will be much appreciated.
