I used to have both the K10D and K20D. They have different shutters. The 20 shutter has much shorter shutter lag. Much more responsive. It also sounds slightly quieter and much "crisper".

In so many ways the 77 is better than the 85. The 85 is a special purpose lens built for portraits. It is not so great for landscapes. But, what the 85 can deliver, like "3D'ness", bokeh and other portrait effects, the 77 just cannot.

I have the same experience, too. I suggest that you shoot some distant objects on a tripod and then do the AF adjust based on that.
In my case, the AF for near objects also seems to be OK after the adjustment, some 80 or 90% of the time. Good luck.

My first Pentax dslr was the DS. At that time, I already had the Nikon D70. I felt the DS was better in most areas except AF. Overtime, I also got the K10 and the K20.
Looking back, I think it is (1) the rich and lively colors (in raw) (2) the quality of the Pentax lenses and (3) reasonable size and weight that have kept me with Pentax. The colors from the K20 (with some help from Silkypix) is just amazing.

First the easy steps:
1) switch off SR
2) stop the lens down to F6.7 or smaller
3) use the middle of the zoom range, like between 20-45mm
4) shoot in good light
5) always half press to pre-focus
Next:
6) read the manual if you have not already done so
7) try out the various in-camera image quality and JPEG settings, especially the contrast and sharpness
8) adjust the autofocus setting. Do a search and you will find all you need to know
9) shoot in raw files and use Pentax PhotoLab.
Finally if picture still not sharp, return or repair the camera and/or the lens. In truth, digital photography is computer PLUS photography. Not necessarily easier than film photography.

I think it is very difficult for a consumer to test the effects of SR.
My theory is, when it is on, it will try to move the sensor to compensate for camera shakes. When it does that, it may compensate accurately, overcompensate or undercompensate. There are lots or variables, like how much and how quickly the movement, how good is the motor in moving the sensor, the shutter speed, the lens' focus length, the camera to subject distance, etc. It is very difficult to compensate accurately everytime.
When I first got my K10, I found that on pixel peeping, some pictures look blurry when SR was on. Its sort of like double vision in a small scale.
So, where I think I can manage, I turn SR off so that it doesn't add shakes of its own. At 1/30 or below, I engage SR. Between 1/30 and 1/500 I sometimes got blurry pics but I will know that's my problem. Above 1/500 is usually fine.

The test chart also gives me different results with different shooting distance. What I did instead was just shoot around town at the widest aperture for 30-40 shots and use the results for AF adjustment. Ends up with about 90% accuracy with the correct AF adjust setting.
