Well, I cant afford a clean room, but I guess I could rip out a shop fan and re-purpose it to move the air. As noted the key is the angle of attack into the wind stream. I wonder if my wife would notice that our whole house fan is missing while I tinker around with this. That is highly adjustable, produces a directed wind stream, and can easily blow long enough and hard enough.

I haven't had my rock wool tested but one of the neighbors had some asbestos in theirs. Their home looked like a crime scene where everything was taped off and 1/4 full bag after another 1/4 full bag went into a taped off entry into the disposal truck. All that care for insulation we had crawled around in during my 30 years in this house. You would think that is what would have hurt you not them loading the stuff into the truck. By the way, this final paragraph is true.

I think moving a lot of air is the trick. I ask my wife to get our car going precisely 19 miles an hour , though I would limit it to 30 KPH fot those outside the USA. Then, after carefully locking the mirror up I open the window and hold the camera at an angle between 20 and 24 degrees. We usually get it done within 4 or 5 blocks

Three cautions.

1. Make sure you have a good wrist strap. I made the mistake of relying on one from a discount kids store. Wasn't pretty.

2. It goes without saying you should not do this on a dirt road or on a high ozone day.

3. Finally, as my departed brother's family learned, you should not be wearing a neck strap. Not that bad of a loss, it was a Nikon.

Cheers!!!

Do you still have this camera? I am planning a trip to Yellowstone and this could be a cool (or should I say warm) addition.

I am just starting to learn about IR photography. If I am right this is measuring the heat signatures of items with the hotter items being brighter. But when I look at pictures of the creek, the water is brighter than the banks or the rocks in the stream. Where am I going wrong?

Will all of my Pentax K mount glass from my K-73 and k-70 fit this camera or it limited to certain lenses?

Finally, do I need any filters for my lenses beyong the UV, CP, ND, etc. filters I already own?

Power Adapters Pentax vs Third Party

I have started looking for power adapters for my K-3 and my wife's K-70 cameras. On the K-3 I have a choice of a Pentax branded adapter at B&H for $99 vs a $15 third party adapter on Ebay. My initial response is to get the $15 Ebay adapter. BUT ... I really do not want to fry my camera whie using this version. I would be stepping over dollars to pick up pennies if that were to happen.

SO, Have any of you had much experience with the third party adapters? Have they ever harmed your cameras, or the batteries? This would seem to be a pretty remote chance to me based on my knowledge of electronics, but I am a camera newbe, and I am not ashamed to admit there are likely to be some holes in my knowledge base.

For the K-70000 it would appear that the Pentax option has been DQed, leaving my choices to be third party or none at all with the none at all being preferable to harming the bosses (41 years now) camera.

SMC Pentax 28-90 3.5-5.6 Lens

Hello, I got what I hope was a good deal on a lens for my wife's K-70. My question has to do with the rear lens area. On all of the other SLR and DSLR lenses that I have used the rear lens opening is round. My new lens appears to have an adapter shaped like the Wide Screen TVs.

I have attached a picture of the rear of this lens. The engraved name of my lens is SMC Pentax FA 1:3.5-5.6 28-90 focusing Infinity - .4 M/1.3 ft.

Can somebody please tell me what that plate is for, and if I need to remove this for normal photo shooting purposes. I am sorry for how unexperienced we are, but everybody needs to start someplace and I would sooner look foolish with an elementary question than hurt her camera or have one of her first sessions ruined because I left something on that I should have removed.

Does all of the Sun Screen that somebody put in my SF-10 I foolishly lent my daughter count? Must have been at least 6 ounces in there, permeating my shutter, etc? I have earmarked it for her in my will.

But getting back to my point on dealers, I live in Denver and there is only 1 authorized dealer within 100 miles. They do not sell Pentax Cameras, just service them and the lenses. Hope my lenses don't start leaking.

---------- Post added 06-27-19 at 05:31 PM ----------

Hey, I love her enough to leave the camera to her in my will. Probably will give her the near new SF10 I got on Ebay earlier this month. The strap is still wrapped up and I cannot find any signs of use inside of it. It won't stay that way for long. I really want to take it out with me on my wheelchair and start shooting some of those rolls I missed out on shooting.

I never said I liked Harley, but outside of Triumph they were the main thing you would see back in the early 60s. My Uncle had a Beemer, but they were not that popular back then. Anybody who has ridden those 60s era Harley's should honestly report they got a BBQ on their right leg on long rides. That hot as H oil tank was right there, and it roasted your leg. I think that was one of the main reasons leggings became so popular among the riders.

As noted elsewhere I am a Suzie Q lover and will always love them.

My use of Harley was rather as a real life example of how a huge player in the motorcycle market through a series of collosal mistakes almost became an ex player in the motor cycle market. Does that remind anybody about how Pentax has taken a similar path through a series of mistakes?

I started in my mid 30's, then made the mistake of lending my original Pentax to my daughter for a class trip. The first trp she broke my original telephoto lens when my camera bag ended up at the bottom of everybody's backpack on the class trip. I ate that expense and bought a no name telephoto lens made by Access*Tempo. At least their name was good, but it was a significant step backwards from my Pentax Lens.

2 years later my daughter and my wife convinced me she had learned and my camera would be safe for a school trip from Colorado to England paid for by the students through numerous car washes, bake sales, pizza sales, etc. i.e. -- large contribution from Dad driving old car that was very clean. Then my daughter and my Pentax went to England. She shot numerous rolls of film that were to be developed in a photography class she was going to take where they wouldn't cost anything except for a significant class materials fee that is. When she got back she kept putting me off regarding my camera. Finally, after a week I demanded it and found that through some strange quirk of fate the insides of my camera was full of Sun Screen. Obviously, someone was trying to get back at her, but missed and hit my photo career.

With more kids in the pipeline I decided I just could not afford photography anymore, and went through a few years with disposable cameras. Finally, i crept into series of cheap Digital Cameras. Sci-Pix 1.5 MP, Concord 2.0 MP, Olympus 8 MP, GE X5 10 MP. Then, celebrating reaching 64 I bought me a K-3 and my wife a K-70. The old Pentax is waiting patiently on the shelf if my daughter ever wants to borrow a camera. .

My point with the Harley's was that they were the bike to go with, then they stood still, then they cut back and went to war with the workers. They leaked oil not due to their design, but due to the guys on the line getting back at Harley for a paycut by not torqueing the bolts down. 20% less pay, I will tighten down 20% fewer parts mindset.

I had friends with Harleys and hated riding them back then. It has long since been changed but they used to have the oil tank where it would roast the rear of your leg just above the knee. I very much preferred my 73 Suzuki 750 Water Buffalo so named as it was the first to market with a water cooled engine beating the Gold Wing by 2 yearsI have kept my Suzuki 1400 Intruder in the garage as I can't sell the beast even though I know I can never ride her again.

But back to our favorite camera company. They need to show they are still relevant and you do that through bettering the product or developing companion products. Their recent product news about an exciting new paint job just does not cut it, and we all know it. How many felt that was a leap forward for Pentax? To me it was more like "You called us together for that?" Enough of those and people stop paying attention.

Note: It does not need to be equipment. Paid firmware enhancements that expand the camera's abilities will also work, such as pairing the FLU Card with new coding allowing voice control of the camera could be one area to explore along with powered tripods etc. To somebody like me who is wheelchair bound except for very short distances that would be a great improvement.

Does anybody else remember the once popular brand Harley Davidson? At one time back in the 50's they represented the epidemy of motorcycling. Then while it's Japanese and German competition grew in the 60's the Harley line declined. It was bought by a conglomerate AMF in the late 60's and was tied to the leisure industry line ranging from Bowling Allies to camping gear, to nice Harleys. AMF declared war on Harley workers . . . or was it the other way around?

Anyway they started selling crap with outdated lines. Dealers reported having to park them over cardboard else they would leak all over the showroom floor. Great sight for potential buyers. After bleeding the company AMF decided to sell the shell of what had been. Odds were on how long it would take the Hardly Drivables to go into bankruptcy. Then things changed with a new management team. Today Harley is once again considered "cool" and few are predicting it will leave the scene anytime soon.

Substitute Pentax for Harley and you can get the picture. But Pentax needs to do more than introduce new color schemes and balsa grips. If that is there idea of the future perhaps they should join AMF. I hope they continue to build on their great designs with ever better user experiences.

I also get into the parks for free as a permanently disabled person with the Golden Access pass. In Colorado I get into our State Parks with the State Equivalent and also get a lifetime fishing permit. Now, all I need to figure out is how to fit some hip boots onto my wheel chair.

By the way, I am not sure I should get in for free, but figure it is like tax regulations. Right and wrong lose meaning when Uncle Sam sets the rules. You just need to go with legal or illegal. I am not about to walk away from a tax deduction, nor a free entrance. I just go with their regulations.

Dear Not a Number and Stevebrot,

Thank you for putting me onto the other thread. I searched under headphone terminal differences and the search came back empty. I recognize that all the "issues" my wife and I are "discovering" are almost certainly well discussed on prior threads. The trick is to gain enough knowledge to ask the right questions.

I went through with her the port by port parts of her K-70 camera, and then thinking that they would have likely been standardized skipped over the headphone terminal on my K-3. Then when the new remote arrived I thought I already knew where it belonged on both cameras. This taught me that the differences between the 2 far exceed the enhanced photo set up options that my K-3 gives me.

Thanks again for helping me out.

I purchased a Vello Freeware Wireless Remote after reading that the remote supported K-5, K-5 II, K-50, and K-500. But when I got it home and tried it on my k-3 and K-70 the plug was to narrow for my cameras. Is there a difference in the terminal jack size for my cameras and the K-5 etc?

I would have thought that something like that would be standardized across all modern Pentax cameras. If they are different, does anybody know where I can get an adapter?

I purchased 10 of them, and have so far used 4 of them between my K-3 and my wife's K-70. The write speed works great for my limited demands. They work great in some repeated 3 burst modes, and they accomodate the pixel shift mode where I think the hangup is the camera buffer speed, not the cards. I am very pleased with them.

When I was on Amazon yesterday I noticed they had gone up by $2.00 to $11.99 which is still not a bad deal, but not as good as they were.

The link to Amazon is

https://www.amazon.com/Lexar-Professional-633x-64GB-UHS-I/dp/B012PL6K8M/ref=...3&sr=8-4-spell

I bought mine on Friday, free prime delivery today on a Sunday. I tried to give 1 of the cards a quick test. In continuous shooting mode, taken at approximately 20 ft using my K-3, Pentax 18-45 at F4 set to capture 6160 x 4000 captured in Adobe Digital Negative .DNG format 18 files were captured in approximately 8 seconds, file sizes around 29.5 MB for a capture of 531 MB while the buffer was being loaded. Then for the next 25 seconds the capture rate was an additional 38 files for a rate of 1.52 frames per second and 950 MB (38 Mbs) more data being captured.

Note: Those times may have been slowed down by a weak battery. I tried to see if it would keep up at full HD mode, but the battery died after 20 seconds. I will try again tomorrow.

I ordered 10 and they all appear to be in original packaging and were made in Korea.

Amazon has a sale on Lexar 64 GB Cards for $9.99. The card is
Lexar Professional 633x 64GB SDXC UHS-I Card

I know about counterfeit cards, but according to the listing these cards are sold and shipped by Amazon. That should preclude the counterfeit card issue as I do not think that Amazon itself, as opposed to a vendor on Amazon would be putting out counterfeit cards. Hopefully, I will not get trapped by my inheret cheapness, but Amazon has a great return policy if they fail my tests.

The K 70 I ordered from Ebay arrived today and appears to be in great operating condition. It is 3 years old, but had only 1,575 Shutter Count so it is virtually new. Hopefully the weather in Denver will improve tomorrow so that I can make some test shots. My entire family will be together on Saturday so we will get some pictures out of it. If all the grandkids make it we could have up to 34 people there.

The main thing is the pictures of my kids , their kids, and finally everybody as an individual. Just being there is going to feel like Heaven on Earth. When I die the only thing I will leave behind is my wife the six kids/their spouses and my 20 grandkids including those who joined my family with their mother. Those people represent a lifetime of work and they really are worth it.

I only hope that my rusty old skills will be effective in capturing this grand event. I know it will be wonderful from a technical viewpoint and the test will cone when you put that which I have learned fron Ude online coursework, my new pride and joy the new (to me) K -70, and my Affinity Photo post-processing to document the work of a lifetime -- my family.

I am finally getting a chance to realize my dream. Years ago, I bought what I thought was a fairly good start up kit with my SF 10.

3 years later my daughter kept pestering me to let her borrow it for a school trip. Since she was getting into photography taking courses on developing her film at the school dark room lab etc I foolishly said yes, unlike the previous 2 trips.

You guessed it, she put it in a bag along with a bottle of sunscreen that she could not take 2 seconds to shut, and I got a camera back that would never need to worry about getting a sunburn. It was ruined, but at least the lenses were okay. WQell I had to send a never ending seies of kids to school which along with a disability retirement at 45 meant no replacement. I made do with a string of point and shoots -- the last one of which was a GE X-5 with 14.1 megapixels and a 10 x optical zoom. But it was not my old Pentax.

Last November my wife gave me a copy of Affinity Photo and it was instant love. The old GE was going to have to be retired. After looking around I got what I consider to be a pretty good deal for my Pentax K-20. In the 25 years or so since my old camera got ruined I shifted from walking around to driving my wheelchair around, so I will not be able to wander along the edges of streams etc, but it will still be a fulfilled dream for me.So yeah, I plan on using it most every day. I also have 3 grandkids that live here with their parents. I plan on teaching them to love what they can do with a camera and how much they can improve the photo with the software.

Thanks again for your folks kind directions. As soon as I can figure out my Paypal I will make a donation.

Thank you for your rapid reply.

My new camera is a significant investment and I really want to take care of it while also using it a lot. I will compare my lenses to the chart when they arrive on Wednesday.

Do you have any suggestions on what I should ensure is in my cleaning kit? I am a newbee and probably do not know enough to even ask the right questions yet. Sorry about that.

Hello everybody, I just took the plunge and moved into the DSLR ranks with a Pentax K - 70. I have been on a disability retirement for 20 years and I am largely confined to a wheelchair, though I can stand for short periods. I am also in need of my O2 tanks and so my base will be my Jazzy 1170 XL which is a workhorse. There are few trails that I cannot take, just need to be done before my O2 runs out 3 or so hours per bottle. I cannot get my chair to a beach sand, where there are steps, or where there are no bridges at least 3 feet wide.

I just bought a used Pentax K 70 DSLR off of Ebay with a claimed 1,758 shutter count. The kit supposedly comes with 5 lenses. They are --

1. Pentax 16mm –45mm – f/4 to f/22
2. Pentax 35mm f/2

3. Pentax 80mm – 200mm f/4.5 to f/32
4. Pentax 80mm – 320mm f/4.5 to f/38

5. Sigma EX 105 mm f/2.8 to f/32

Prior to this I had a Pentax SF 10 SLR that has now given up the ghost. I do not think it is worth fixing, is there anything I should pull off of it prior to trashing it? This older Kit had 2 Autofocus lenses.

6. Pentax 28 mm - 70 mm f/4 to f/22
7. Access 80 mm - 200 mm f/3.8 to f/32

I think that lenses 6 and 7 will work on my new camera, with Lens 6 being close to Lens 1 and Lens 7 being close to Lens 3, with Lens 7 being just a little faster even though it is older. Is there any problem connecting these Pentax SLR Lenses to my new Pentax DSLR Camera?

Also my kids got me a present about 30 years ago of a manual lens off of QVC. It is one of those low cost manual focus types with Pentax, Cannon, and Nikkon adapters. It is

8. QVC HQ Optics 500 mm F/8 Lens

If I try to hook this up to my DSLR will I be hurting the cropped sensor? It wasn't the greatest lens on my SLR, but I wonder if I can get used to it on the DSLR. Alternatively, Ebay has a lens

9. 1,300 that with the 2 times Barlow goes to 2,600 mm f/8

(are they called that in Photography, it was what we called them on telescopes)

I know this is a very slow lens, but is it worth $190 and will it hurt my new Camera body? The lens can be seen at

Opteka 650-1300mm (1300-2600mm) Telephoto Lens for Pentax Digital SLR Cameras 814578024531 | eBay

What additional lenses should I keep my eye out for? I want to at least experiment in macro photography. Should I invest in Barlow Lenses and other specialty adapters?

Filters:

1. UV Filters I already know enough to ensure that each lens has a UV Filter for protection at all times.

2. Polarizing Filters -- do I want circular or regular? Should every lens have 1, or 2 if I need both circular and regular polarization.
3. Neutral Density Filters -- Do I need for every lens, or can I skip some?
4. Other Filters -- What other filters are recommended and why are they important?

Flash:

I am not sure how good of a flash the camera comes with. It seems to be about 3 inches high with a upside down u shaped window going down to camera body. The flash itself appears to have either 2 bars made up of several LEDs or has two 1 inch or so long elemends above the hot shoe.

What should I be looking for in a flash? I have seen reasonably priced master/slave battery operated flash that can be had for under $40. Are they worthwhile or should I stick with major brands and if so what are they?

I have also seen some flash units that appear to encircle the lens. Are these of any value?

Finally, what type of lighting is recommended for interior video shooting using the x-70.

Cleaning and Tools

I have seen numerous cleaning kits. Beyond the dust bulb, lens brush, dusting brush, Qtips (special type ????) Cleaning solution bottle (what type(s) of solution are recommended), lens tissues, and micro fiber cloths what is suggested?

How often do I need to clean the CMOS-C Sensor? Are the little kits sold on EBAY etc for around $3.69 for 10 swabs the best way to go, or is this something I should avoid? I used to put in a cleaning tape on my analog Mimi DV heads and they worked good.

With tools the main 2 items I do not have are the Japanese Industrial Standard Screwdrivers and Lens Spanners. I have an excellent Leatherman tool a great supply of various pliers including mini pliers, and various auto/home tools picked up over 60 years of being a do it yourselfer. I have been told my new lenses are fungus free, but will not know for sure until later in this week. What other tools do you folks recommend?

Finally, is the SWX - 70 very good at being a DVR? If so what lenses should I use and do I need any lighting?

Thank you in advance for any answers you can give me. I look forward to joining the community.
