It is also some of the worst possible IQ one can get, and to top it off has absolutely hideous *and* clunky cameras behind it. Yet, it sells because it's hip and cool.
Pentax may well be onto something here. Particularly when a cheapo roll of film is 10 bucks nowadays...

Twelve years ago there wasn't Tiktok or Instagram everywhere.
The fact anyone at all is even considering buying Instax stuff baffles me, but there it is - subsidizing the rest of Fuji's camera stuff :D. Half-frame is for sure a risky choice but it isn't without merits, honestly.

I was just thinking that the camera will turn out photos at 5:7 ratio - that is a very good portrait choice. Slightly slimmer than 4:3.

Huh, vertical format. This is an interesting gamble - that's right for the instagram crowd.

Recently found a local roaster - so I've been enjoying their lovely single-origin coffees (girlfriend is dead set on Brazil Boa Vista, I am currently hooked on a lovely Kenyan).
Still grinding at home with the 1Z-Presso, but using a bog-standard Taurus filter coffee maker most of the time. It has a nice reusable mesh basket, so it doesn't absorb as much oil as the paper filter and makes a very competent cup.

I didn't get the 52 because it was a bunch of money more expensive (I found a like-new 48 for 40€, so I think it was a too-good-to-pass-up deal), but it was definitely in the cards.
The Godox looks like a LOT of bang for your buck too... if I ever need a replacement for mine. Batteries are a definite improvement.

I have a Metz 48 (sadly Metz is no longer, gotta hunt for a 26 AF-2 so I can always carry it with...) that by all acounts (I'd say "mine included" but I haven't played around with the Pentaxes - so I can only say I'm happy with it in a vacuum where no other midrange flashes exist lol) is a very decent alternative to OEM stuff and even when new it was half the price of those... I personally wouldn't have thought of buying a Pentax flash unless it offered something the others didn't and was a reasonably-priced device. ---------- Post added 01-23-24 at 05:18 PM ----------
High ISO situations are, very often, the type of situation where you don't want to use flash. Increasing the gain of the sensor is very different from adding extra light sources.
The excellent performance of modern sensors does translate to shadow lifting if you don't have fill flash available, but... fill flash is significantly less work.

How many film lenses leave a black ring at the edge? Even with the non-PLM version you're looking at heavy vignetting.

You know, this would have been a perfect opportunity to call it the Pentax Kf like some other brand, but alas... :p

Something just a touch more offensive than the rest of Europe, methinks. I made the mistake of looking at new gear prices the other day and my wallet both curdled and curled into a sobbing mess :D:D:D

This sounds quite reasonable - at 50x70cm I start seeing the limits of the K-7 (approximately 170 dpi without cropping)... it's mitigated by printing B/W, particularly of minimalist subjects without a lot of finely-textured detail, but you start feeling the difference with the K-1, which gives you preposterous detail at that size.

Emphasis mine.
From that wording, the thickness itself is not an issue - it's the kludginess of many cameras.

But they haven't given an indication of *numbers*. It is entirely possible that "high prices" might have meant the camera would cost 3000€, if they thought it wouldn't sell at that price.
If we don't even have an inkling of their target price range, speculation is pointless.
But since we're at it... My speculation is that the K-3iii sold more poorly than they expected simply because it was too expensive for the specs: contrast and compare Canon R7, Fuji XT-4 or even X-T5 nowadays, Sony A6700, etc...
All of those leave the Pentax in the dust except in ergonomics, build quality (at least, apparent build quality - failure rate is probably similar if you get to the actual numbers) and having an OVF, so I *very* much doubt they are thinking of a very high range for the K-1iii (which would have the benefit of being full frame which at least makes it easier to accept a higher cost).
IMO, they want the K-1iii to compete with something like the Canon R5 or Nikon Z7ii in price, at most competing with the A7R4 (with the more expensive OVF compensating for the near-certainty that we won't see the drive rate, buffer depth or AF performance of the MILCs). They are certainly nowhere near the electronics needed to get in the whereabouts of the A7R5 or similar stuff.

Eh. It doesn't suck, it is just used for different types of photography.
I shoot landscape primarily and I don't even remember the last time I needed all the DR in the K-1 (though I've gotten close a good number of times), so I'm fairly certain the intended users are going to be fine with this.

There are three possible customers for gear:
1) No previous camera gear
2) Pre-existing customer who buys deeper into the system/replaces a broken piece of equipment
3) Customer switching from another system.
I think that oftentimes it's easy to focus only on Customer 3, when that train left the station a very long time ago, and this is the case with most brands at this point, because frankly there isn't *that* much difference in performance between the bigger players, at least not enough to matter once you've got enough gear that it would cost a bunch of money to switch.
A DA* 50-135/2.8 PLM (or DFA 70-300/4-5.6, or modern DA* 55/1.4 or what have you) is not going to pry Customer 3 away, but it might make it so Customer 1 doesn't dismiss Pentax at first glance and so Customer 2 buys their lens... and doesn't become a Customer 3 for other brands, which means they won't buy *any* other lens anymore. It's not necessarily about the media splash but about making the cash flow for longer than the initial rush.
I am certain that the Mono would have had even more of an impact if it had a more fleshed-out, modern system to support a prospective user who wanted to add to another system.

In this particular case it's often because startups with 30 employees are starved for exposure to possible industrial partners - a larger company will have built its own communication channels (well, maybe not Ricoh Imaging, considering their marketing :D:p... although they do seem to be doing a bit more in social media and such nowadays) and will likely get less benefit out of the trade show.

They might consider the HD DFA 100 Macro to be that lens, because it's not that much more expensive than the HD FA reissues (okay, 650€ is more than 400€ but it's not THAT much over it that it makes it a different class of lens IMO).

Yep, I don't see any IQ improvements being noticeable over my K-1 already... if they upgraded it with the K-3iii's AF and a bit faster usability from the electronics side, I'd be set for life (or for as long as the body lasted, more likely :D). Anything else would be just GAS talking.
