Why does angle >45 degrees create K-1 Astrotracer trails?

Ah now there's something new. Yes thanks for pointing out to check "compass" mode. While I do check calibration with each new location, that's something I haven't yet tried. Thanks that is a good way to try that out.

Pairing the D FA 150-450 with the old SMC 1.7 TC?

Happy owner of the H D FA 150-450mm on a K-1 and the photos are of superb quality. I recently tried the new 1.4x rear converter that isn't officially rated for full frame and had noticeable degradation in sharpness. While I do suspect I received a bad copy of the 1.4, I am tempted to try the old SMC Pentax-F 1.7x SMC Pentax-F 1.7x AF Adapter Reviews - Pentax K-mount Teleconverters and Adapters - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database with the D FA 150-450 to see if there's comparable results.

Anyone try pairing the two? Should I just try another copy of the 1.4?

Yes exactly! I've also read similar comments in Q&As, can't find the links but they're out there.

Oops sorry I missed the first reply.

It's the elevation of the object. In my location Andromeda is nearly overhead.

Why does angle >45 degrees create K-1 Astrotracer trails?

After reading other forum posts the general consensus seems to be that an angle greater than 45 degrees creates trailing when using astrotracer. I'm using a K-1 and started getting into deep sky, and immediately noticed trailing when imaging Andromeda. It was at an angle greater than 45 degrees.

I am a previous successful user of astrotracer but the OGPS unit seemed to perform better than the K-1's internal sensors.

Anyone have any suggestions here or should I just invest in a tracking mount?

BTW here's a successful stacked image using 10 second exposures at 12800 ISO... Andromeda and M32 | Made from 15 light frames by Starry Sky ? | Flickr

A ridge of weather started moving in and created this neat effect of clouds radiating from the Milky Way. We were camped up in the mountains during a climb. Stacked image from 6 exposures, each 10 seconds at 12800 ISO f/2.4. You can see a hi res version on my 500px: Clouds from the galactic core by Justin Long - Photo 1000277820 / 500px

Composition of 16 frames, each 10 seconds at 6400 ISO f/2.4. After a day of summiting two peaks, we enjoyed the Milky Way for a couple hours before it was time for bed. That's our campfire in the foreground. Hi-res available here: Camping at Sun God Mountain | Made from 16 light frames. Alg? | Flickr

Compilation of 25 exposures each of 2 seconds at 100 ISO using the K-1's interval and averaging features. A rolling mist over the trees blended the colors together creating the rich sky seen in the photo.
