The BEST lens to learn lens cleaning on...

Steve it may be useful to watch Youtube lessons on lens cleaning first hopefully if you have not already done so on this particular lens to get your bearings then I would imagine you would be fine.
Personally have not pulled this particular lens apart have worked on the Domiplan and a Leica Summitar lens after watching a Summaron lens I was told was good for parts being cleaned up and sold for a 400% margin on Gumtree so that sharpened the mind wonderfully:)
Mark with a pen were things align before you pull each section apart and sometimes counting the number of turns accurately and keeping notes may be necessary with some lenses when dismantling. You should be OK then when re aligning things accurately during reassembly and you will find it is not too difficult or stressful if you have an accurate record of where you are at particularly if you have to leave halfway through the job.
I put everything on a large tray with the lens in the middle with lamps around the tray and sheets of white paper on the tray to keep everything clean and easy to find in the parts in the order they are disassembled with tools outside the tray.
Not sure if this helps am sure other guys will have some important things to consider and enjoy the experience,

cheers Nick

Many thanks and yes older glass does have it's attractions or in so many cases what is old is new again such as with the 58mm f/1.9 Primoplan even though modern lenses are great too:)

Vintage/ antique store lens advice

I would probably stick to the 50-55mm-58mm lenses as they are easy to find with the f/1.4 Takumars usually very good re aperture blades not sticking and ease of focusing is superb.
The 50mm f/1.4 lenses tend to be of higher build quality and or the f/2.8 135mm lenses.
Try and get multi-coated versions of lenses if possible with the improved performance and contrast.
Many of the older lenses such as many of the m42 mount auto takumars may have 10 aperture blades that can be helpful for pleasing bokeh and obviously not multi-coated so will need to factor in a good lens hood.
When inspecting lenses of course see if the aperture blades are sticking and if the focus is a little stiff.
Hold the lens up to a bright light or the sky at various angles and rotate the lens slowly to see if there is a problem with fungus or haze.
A small amount of fungus may be OK on the edge of the lens perimeter further from the sensor.
Know the prices of certain lenses you may be looking for, and be prepared to pay more for a superb quality lens that will not require servicing.
Personally find that putting a cheap lens with a slight amount of fungus in an oven at 66 degrees centigrade for three hours seems to snot the fungus:)
Enjoy your journey of discovery,

cheers Nick

The BEST lens to learn lens cleaning on...

Had the strange experience of a Meyer-Optik Görlitz Domiplan 50mm f/2.8 lens coming apart while focusing. The lens was extremely simple being a triplet lens to clean and reassemble and pleasingly much sharper as it was full of large dust particles.
After doing some research the advice seems best to be to clean the rear element of this lens in situ as the rear element is used for the lens focusing calibration.
Not sure if this principle applies to any other Meyer lenses too.

Live in subtropical Brisbane with a keen interest in old lenses and film cameras having had the shutter bug since 12 years old.
Trained in farm management originally working in the country for half my working life. We left the country settling in Brisbane and we have a business using my horticultural knowledge. Many plants grown in my garden are photographed with their bird and insect companions during the year.
My father Wally was my mentor using many lenses and techniques in the film days to make films, slides and prints for recording his medical research.
With my father's passing Wally's lenses were gifted to me and very fortunately now with lens adapters for modern digital cameras it really has been a joy using these old lenses.
My wife's father Lindsay did research in the field of entomology at the CSIRO. Lindsay's Pentax camera with lenses were gifted to me.
With this legacy there has been a voyage of discovery tinged with sadness at times not being able to thank Wally and Lindsay for this photographic inheritance.

Am looking forward to learning more about photography in this excellent forum and incredible resource and do hope to share some knowledge using various lenses in the future,

cheers Nick
