Good call on the plate lol. I think based on the kit I have the 55-300 makes the most sense for the long end because it's small (as compared to the 70-200) and light. I'm carrying food and water on my back as well as camera gear.

You raise some great points (and thanks to everyone who has posted so far). I do worry about tripod in sand conditions so I'll have to play with that or tether myself to the tripod somehow just in case. I will have fun promise!

Will definitely be getting up early for sunrise in the desert and watching the sun go down. My 2.8 16-50plm is the fastest thing I own and I'm loving it so far.

---------- Post added 04-14-23 at 05:16 PM ----------

Thank you for your input. The 16-50 will be the walkaround and work horse for sure. I don't have any money for more gear so it's what I have.

Great ideas. I actually ended up buying the "PhotoPills" app a while back and it's got some great planning tools I need to explore.

Using the moon to help me is something I haven't given enough thought, so thank you for the idea.

And @UncleVanya; I can't buy anything else so my choices are fairly easy in that regard:). Thank you for all the information though!

Going on a trip to Morroco in May and will be heading into the desert for part of it (2 nights).

Planning on taking:
- KP, extra batteries, 16-50PLM, 55-300 PLM, tripod, wired remote, O-GPS1, cleaning supplies.

I have a D-FA 70-200 but unsure if I can handle the size/weight of packing that safely for this trip and am telling myself that I can be okay with the 55-300 for anything longer range.

Any tips/ideas are welcome! I just feel like I'm going to miss something simple but important (outside of a big hat and lots of water and sunsreen of course).

My goal will be to take it all in and enjoy myself but also do some Astro (I'm still a beginner at that and I can sometimes get the O-GPS1 to work how I want...).

Thank you for posting your thoughts!

I was trying this on a 16-50, which is problematic with a normal Bahtinov mask.

Inside the hood is a good idea.

I was thinking of 3D printing one with tight slots from some of the reading I had done but my access to one fell apart over the winter. Probably have some luck in the summer. In the meantime I'll try to work with magnifying Live View as I'm starting to feel like that filter price is a little too steep for me at this time.

They seem to have a specific one for very wide angles too, not sure if that would help. For me I'd be trying it on a 16-50.

I agree that it's pretty pricey, especially when I factor in that's likely USD (versus CAD) so that hurts.

Not sure what to do otherwise unless it's just a matter of practice. I have issues focusing through the viewfinder in daylight some days (tack sharp anyway) so I'm just trying to think of ways to give myself a boost in that regard.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Hi everyone,

Let's just say I have a hard time getting good focus on stars because of my eyes. I've been looking for a solution and came across this filter called "Focus on Stars". Essentially a similar principle to a Bahtinov mask but works on wide angle as well. I would need to find a 100mm filter holder as well.

Has anyone tried one of these? They sound promising:

If I could raise the funds I would do it! The exchange rate to CAD is just hard for us even such a deal as this, sorry!

Agree about FB marketplace: always in person, always somewhere very public and safe.

If the 70-200 was also a silver unit there's someone in the wanted section looking for one. Just FYI

I can definitely see the appeal in terms of easy access and that these two lenses would be fairly light (60% of the weight total to something like the 16-50 PLM alone, and $370 CAD cheaper than the new PLM before taxes). Not to mention size, as you say. Thanks for the feedback.

That's a good point. I think I've never thought this way outside of "which zoom range do I need" so I've always had 1-2 lenses in my bag. Short and Long. I'm sure this is because I need to grow as a photographer and move my legs more and look at the scene before firing away.

When traveling, do you find yourself wishing for the 16-50 for the wide end sometimes? 4mm on the wide end can change things up a fair amount (versus just walking a certain distance to reframe one's self I would imagine).

Can't say I've ever seen one around locally in a K-mount unfortunately as originally I was thinking about this for the same FL and a 'step up' in terms of IQ etc. Thanks for the insight no less into the AF performance though that's interesting.

---------- Post added 03-10-22 at 06:48 AM ----------

It certainly is hard to say goodbye to that lens. I've traveled with it and it sure is useful. In an attempt to keep my lens count low and fund new lenses I was thinking I'd be able to get away with only having the 16-50 and 55-300 PLM for almost every scene I could come up with, selling the 18-135 in the process. You're making me ask hard questions to myself on what I value haha (which is good)!

I had read a number of reports of it having issues with being soft on one side all of a sudden or having the focus 'jump' between shots, and then others where people just love it, which is encouraging of course. Sometimes I have a hard time sifting through reviews like that.

Thank you for the recommendation and for taking the time to write to me.

The 16-85 is indeed a good suggestion/alternative, especially considering its price point too. I guess it comes down to a firm assessment of my needs versus how much I'm willing to spend on "wants". The 16-50 is drool worthy but pricy for sure (price is well deserved for the quality and materials etc don't get me wrong).

I am also painfully aware that it's easy to get caught up on fancy gear that won't make me a better photographer :-)

Sounds like they may have done some tweaking (even though the 16-50 isn't explicitly called out).

"Changes to V1.41
[Enhanced features]

• Added Astrotracer Type 3. For details refer to the PDF manual.Click here

[Others]

Improved AF accuracy and stability during viewfinder shooting.
Improved stability for general performance.
* When this update is done, the contents of version 1.31 and earlier will be also updated.
* When this update is done, you will not be able to restore back to version 1.31 or earlier."

And this just made me look at the KP firmware and the latest one says it's optimized for the 16-50 PLM. Curious if we have any real world KP/16-50 users out there that have done some 'lab' tests?
