Just take lots of photos, front lit, back lit, side lit. An hour after sunrise, an hour before sunset, sunny days, overcast days. Photograph what interests you and don't get hung up on "gear". Those two lenses will be more than enough for a few years. Look at your images and be your toughest critic. Look at your work and continually ask "can I improve on this"? Celebrate mistakes because mistakes tell us what doesn't work which gets you closer to what does. Remember, a person that doesn't make mistakes doesn't make anything.

Many thanks for the replies. Highlight Correction (is that the same as highlight recovery?) was set to AUTO. I have now set it to OFF. AF was not set to spot metering.

Today I was shooting in the glorious Australian summer sun, not a cloud in the sky. I had my K-70 in TAv mode and shutter set at 125th and aperture at f7.1, ISO was set to AUTO. All of my shots were overexposed by about 2 stops. The camera kept selecting ISO 200. Using the sunny 16 rule, ISO 200 would only be appropriate for a shutter/aperture combo of 250 f16 or 125 f22. The subject was a little lighter than mid grey. Why wasn't it selecting ISO 100? I'll be shooting in shutter or aperture mode until I can figure this out.
Thanks for any advice.

Finally got it to upgrade. Somehow the filename had managed to have a "2" added to it. Once I changed the filename to exactly what it was called on the Ricoh website the camera recognised it. I must have downloaded the upgrade twice, hence the addition of the number 2!

I'm trying to update the firmware but having the same problem as you were. I don't know what you mean when you say "I forgot to delete the file folder"
I have nothing on the men card except for the bin file but when I start up holding the menu button I just get taken to the usual welcome screen. What am I doing wrong?
I have just tried putting the .bin file into the DCIM folder on the just formatted memory card, same result, taken to welcome screen.

Cleaning up my darkroom today I found a YG filter for my 67. it doesn't say what the factor is so I measured it on my densitometer. For a comparison I also measured a B+W standard yellow that know has a one stop factor. The Yellow filter measured .03 which is precisely one stop, as expected. When I measured the Pentax YG I got .19 which is 6 1/3rd stops. This doesn't seem right. What factor did Pentax assign this filter? Have I had too many beers tonight and messed up my calculations or is that factor correct?

My friends K 70 with the defective solenoid has a serial number of 81111xx. The dealer in Australia told him they put two solenoids in the K 70 and neither worked so they are giving him a new K 70
Does anyone know what serial number range is definitely affected? My K 70 has a serial number of 81161xx so presumably is a bit newer than my friends. I don't suppose there is any way of telling which solenoid your camera has without taking it apart?

I haven't been through all the threads on the KF but I must say I'm surprised that it doesn't have built in GPS. I would have upgraded my K 70 if the KF had built in GPS. Thoughts? ---------- Post added 12-30-22 at 08:49 AM ----------
As I just posted elsewhere, a guy at work just had a solenoid failure on a 9 month old K70 purchased new from an authorised retail outlet in Australia. Of course it could be old stock so I will get the serial number from him.

I know this is an old thread but I thought you might like to know that a guy at my work who has a 9 month old K 70 has just suffered the dreaded solenoid problem, I'm a bit surprised that it has happened on such a new purchase but of course it could have been old stock. I will find out the serial number and post.

Out of curiosity, have you been able to get your K-70 to auto expose properly when using the external flash? I've hooked mine up to my Elinchrom strobes but have to take a flash reading and set everything up manually, I thought this camera would be able to play nicely with an external flash but it seems like that is not the case, perhaps I'm doing something wrong?

One thing I would like to see on digital cameras is better warnings for when there is no SD card in the camera. I took some pics yesterday that did not need the screen unfolded, the camera let me take the pics but after I had finished I realised that there was no SD card in the camera. There was nothing in the viewfinder to tell me no SD card was in the camera, it should flash with a warning ""NO CARD" in the viewfinder. had the same problem with my old Pentax DSLR.,

I'm now back from Italy and I couldn't be happier with the shots my K-70 produced. One thing I've learned is that for any sort of high contrast scene it's best to have exposure compensation on 1 or 2 thirds under, highlights can very easily blow out. The amount of shadow info that is captured in RAW is amazing but highlights can be lost without underexposing a bit.

I'm now on my trip to Italy and the K-70 continues to amaze me! This photo was shot on RAW auto, a bit of tweaking in Lightroom but the camera did an amazing job.

The first time I came across this overused term was in D&CCT in the 90's. The author seemed pretty proud of himself for inventing this term which, as far as I could see, simply described the out of focus area of a photo shot with a wide aperture. People like to complicate photography, I don't know why, but they do.

Regarding my two MX's. Both had light meter issues, as in the meter stopped working, I had one fixed and it broke again, in a way they did me a favour as it made me go to a handheld meter and I never used camera meters again. I had a rewind lever break on one and the shutter gave up when one was stored for a couple of years.

I had 2 MX's over the years and found them to be easily broken compared to the rock solid tank that the K1000 was.
In many ways the K1000 was the perfect film camera. Didn't need a battery, all manual, you had to figure it out and in the process, learn. Almost indestructible.
Surely, with all this interest in film, the time is approaching where some manufacturer sees a market opening.

Thanks so much Des and wadge22. Flash compensation was off. I've found that if I have a light modifier on the flash is when I have the problem. If I take it off I get pretty good exposure.

Just wondering if there is a way to tell the camera to underexpose all images by 1/3rd stop without manually doing it ever time I turn the camera on.

I recently purchased a K-70 as a replacement for my first digital SLR, a K-x.
I couldn't be happier, the image quality is amazing. What I really love about it is with tricky exposure, the camera usually gets it right but if it's not spot on, all sorts of magic can be preformed with the RAW image. I have tons of old Pentax lenses lying around including 7 67 lenses, I've only used DA lenses with this body but I will try a few old lenses on it soon. I doubt you'll regret buying a K-70.

If you just want to chuck a few 800 pixel wide images onto the web, in camera jpegs are fine. But if you want to extract the best image, RAW is the only way to go. It captures everything the sensor sees and you can do with it what you want. With a jpeg, you've already compressed the image and lost tons of info. Another RAW advantage, if you have your camera on some weird setting like tungsten when you are shooting daylight, if you are in RAW, no problem, all the info is there. Cards are cheap, why wouldn't you shoot in RAW?

The difference between the K-70 and the K-x really is night and day. I was putting the camera through all sorts of ad hoc tests. One shot I took was purposely severely underexposed. I opened it in Camera Raw, made an exposure and shadow adjustment and got a really decent image. That image would have been dead on the K-x. Thanks again to all that encouraged me to upgrade. The K-70 is amazing!

I've had the 18-135 for a week now and am pretty happy with it. Attached is a pic I took at the weekend, it was in very poor light but the combo of my new K-70 and the 18-135 turned out some decent results.
Just one question, the zoom seems quite loose, if I have it out at 135 and tilt the camera towards the sky the zoom collapse back to 18, is this normal for this lens?

Just an update. The flash and camera seem to like each other when I put the camera on full AUTO. The problem seems to occur in AE mode.
