Yes I did that before, but then you end up with a less sharp image, 1600 is the limit I use and even then it lacks sharpness. You really need it to be sharp for these little birds. Maybe I should upgrade the camera to the latter version, I guess it's ISO performance is better ---------- Post added 04-10-22 at 01:36 AM ----------

I managed to fix the broken spring on my teleconverter, so the 63B got was converted into a 360mm f5 lens. The trouble with this combination is you get the narrow depth of focus of a f2.5 with the relatively slow speed of a f5. It was quite dark out, so the lens was wide open and the shutter speed was a bit slow. Next time I'll stop the lens down a bit, try it at f5.6 as it was not quite as sharp wide open as some of the other SP lenses I have (but maybe a lot of that is due to the narrow depth of focus).

I tried it against the 300mm macro recently shooting some song birds, it was very good, but I think the macro has the edge over it in sharpness. But it's close.

Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 300mm f5.6 (54B)
A 300mm lens that doesn't strain your wrist.

I used php to make the html, then javascript to control the image loading for larger images (but still not working correctly :(). I don't think I can change the scrollbars easily, as it might break on other browsers. But maybe I'll allow to drag the image around with the mouse. Can't afford to spend too much time on it as I've other projects I should really be getting on with, besides I'd rather add more lenses, and maybe some closeups and bokeh shots.
Cheers

Yes it's very impressive. To think I nearly sold mine as I couldn't get the macro to work. I did a bit of tweaking (following the advice on the forum) and now its working great. ---------- Post added 12-15-21 at 07:14 AM ----------
Yes, I noticed the nice atmosphere it creates. That's really something that can't be measured.

Nice images. Definitely better at closer distances than I found at landscapes.
By the way I've finished my lens comparison page now, you can find it at The big lens test - Ejectamenta
The 24/f2.5 is not on there yet.

Tested the 01BB today stopped down to f8. At this aperture the lens is sharp in the centre and ok at the edges.

There really is not much in it at all, if anything. The Soligor/Kalimar looks a little bit better, maybe because it seems to have slightly better contrast/colours, whereas the Tamron is slightly dull in comparison.

I tested it today on the view from the window, but it didn't look so good, either at the center or at the edges (even at f5.6). The 28-48 zoom is noticeably better.
But maybe it was the rain. I'll try again some other day.
Another lens that does pretty well in the corners is the Schacht-Travegon-35. Not as good in the centre as the flektogon, but holds up in the corners well. Bit low on contrast though.
The Sigma 28mm 1.8 is also a very good lens, sharp in the centre wide open, sharp at the edges stopped down to 5.6. If only it wasn't for the chromatic aberrations ...

It comes in 2 versions an autofocus and manual focus which is a bit shorter. The manual focus version has a nice large focus grip, the autofocus one can hunt a bit when focusing (probably the small aperture). I find it better than the 23a for fitting in the camera bag. Its not a macro but does 1:4 without needing special switches.
Here's an cropped image at 5.6 @ 300mm. It's about as sharp as they get |

Yes, sorry, I got the model number wrong (corrected now). When I tested the 23a recently it was very sharp. ---------- Post added 12-07-21 at 03:22 AM ----------
That sounds like a really amazing lens. But I was only talking about the vintage lenses, out of which the flektogon
was the best I've found so far. But I've got the rare Tamron 24mm f2.5 01BB coming today, which might prove to be better.
I'm still coding my lens tests webpage, I'm putting all of the test results there. You can see the lenses tested at The big lens test - Ejectamenta |

Try the Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm f2.4. The sharpest wide angle I've found so far in the corners and sharp in the center too (usable wide open at f2.4), also nice neutral colours & chromatic aberations well controlled.

The 23A is an incredibly sharp lens at the long end. The only disadvantage is it's slow speed, so I use it only in good light. The SP 70-210 f3.5 is better for low light and is also almost as sharp. If you want totally sharp and low light then the 180 f2.5 is the way to go. I know this is a Tamron page, but if you want very sharp, then check out the Soligor/kalimar 60-300, it's a real sleeper.

Nice pictures, I also had this lens for a while but sold it as I’m more a fan of Tamron’s telephotos and their lovely bokeh. But now I’m thinking, maybe I shouldn’t have?
I’m also quite often under exposing, which is easy with the Sony a99’s live viewfinder.

I can confirm this works. For me all I had to do was remove the long tape, it released tension enough that it went into macro mode. When putting the tape back and the rolling back the grip (actually the most difficult part) I kept it in macro mode. Now the lens goes to macro mode without a problem.

It seems that you are missing the focus you want because of a 'busy' image, this is especially difficult in low light when using a wide aperture. The example image from the other photographer appears sharper because 1) the light is better (therefore the camera allows higher f-stop) 2) The subject is much better defined in the image (there is no other objects to create focusing ambiguity). Auto focus has a difficult job to perform, if you want to be sure you have the subject in focus, either take a burst of photos (one will be good) or monitor the AF point(s) making sure that your subject is selected.
