Another quick LX question...
Posted By Eyewanders

Normally I'd say that Youtube is good for some things and not necessarily for others, but then I realize that
A) that applies to the internet as a whole. And,
B) it's K David, so it'd be rather reliable if so, or at least learned from a reliable source.

My particular LX has electronics that have been "going out" for nearly 6 or 7 years now (since finally diagnosed by Eric H about 5 years ago).
Oddly it's been getting better over time, go figure. In any case my meter stays on after the shutter fires. I've never thought that to be anything but by design, and to be frank I'm not convinced now that it isn't, though I don't think I've ever noted that it stayed on longer than 30 seconds... in fact I'm nearly certain it doesn't. And again, the PCB in mine is *confirmed* to be "going out". All that said, there are quite a number of different printed circuit board types that were used in the LX and change over time without notice or regard to production run or model number etc (this is part of the problem in successfully replacing them), so I'm sure that there may well indeed be different symptoms for different vintage LX cameras with slightly troubled internals. (This adds to the mystery and the exciting mystique of owning one.)

I just performed the same with mine to the exact same result. Sometimes it remained longer than other times.

K135mm/2.5 doesn't focus to infinity

Adjusting the infinity focus on prime lenses is pretty much straight-forward. The basic procedure should be similar with K-series lenses. Remove the name/trim ring. Remove the 3 or more screws holding the filter ring. Remove the three screws holding the outer barrel to the front helical assembly. With the lens mounted on a camera body focus on a distant object by turning the front helical with your fingers. Replace the outer barrel aligning the infinity mark (centered) to the focus mark. Replace screws - don't tighten them down completely (or only one or two) as you may need to fine tune. Check infinity focus and minimum focus. Adjust if needed. Tighten the screws and re-install the other parts.

Check the lens disassembly database for tips on K-series primes

K135mm/2.5 doesn't focus to infinity

Sometimes this just happens... it could have been like that since new, and it’s possible prior owners never noticed.

In many cases, there’s a way to adjust where the lens focuses at the stop.

I adjusted my K45-125 zoom. It wouldn’t focus past ~15m. Now it’s fine. I had to pull back the lens rubber grip, loosen some set screws, move the lens, and repeat until correct. It took an hour or so of pointing the camera down the street one night, but it was totally worth it.

Just a word of caution. When it comes to old cameras, 'unmarked' often means 'unused', which can be problematic. If the LX has been a shelf queen for a few decades it will almost certainly need a CLA.

Nikon follows Sony in cooking raw files for mirrorless cameras

Processing data from the sensor doesn't mean cooking. It's like for meat, you want a 500 gr of chicken, chicken is prepared, without the guts and feather, so that you can cook it without preparation work. JPEG is like the chicken wings already cooked you can eat, maybe add salt and deep into chili sauce.

---------- Post added 27-08-19 at 22:16 ----------

Mirrorless raw files must be processed in order to avoid horses look like zebras and to avoid zebras look like checker boards  P.S we don't have this problem with DSLRs.

The Light Seal Project...

Hi Folks,
I thought I had joined this group long ago, but if I did I couldn't find my sign up/login info, so I'll appear as a new member. Lots of you may know me as the light seal guy and before I go a step further, I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported the project and all those folks who contact me. A week or more ago I received an email message which made me think I needed to show up and say something. A couple of things, actually. 1...I did retire, but that was about 7 years ago. Retirement only means I no longer take in camera repair work and I spend my days working on many other more mundane things now. 2...the "Light Seal Project" is still alive. 3...I'm still happy to try to help with any light seal question or problem.

The message I received seemed to imply the sender thought I might be dead or something. Ha, ha. Well, no. I'm still alive and hope to be for many more years. You know, some scientists believe the first person to live for 200 years has already been born. I don't think it will be me, however. Even at this point, I consider it an accomplishment if I can put my blue jeans on without snagging a foot, falling over and knocking myself unconscious.

After the tsunami wrecked some of the custom foam factories in Japan, it took a couple of years of work and negotiations to have all foam, velvet, etc made for me here in the USA. It is better quality than you'll find anywhere, is guaranteed to last longer and made to my specifications. I will tell you it is more expensive but you truly do get what you pay for. The seal kits are all "pre-cut" now (meaning one kit re-seals one specific camera make and model) and I should mention some have been discontinued. Those discontinued kits are for cameras which enjoy only a tiny bit of consumer interest. Partial list: all Bronica cameras, Fujica, Chinon, Ricoh (aside from the 500g), many Yashicas, Autocord, all of the plastic fantastic auto everything models (including SLRs). Not to say these are bad cameras, but the buying public seems to have become much more discriminating today.

What is new with the project? Improvements of several types. For example, the kit for the Pentax MX contains 5 mirror damper pads which by definition are fiddly. I'm experimenting with new ways of cutting these tiny pads which will hopefully make them more easy to remove from the backing paper for the user and more easy to use. And release tabs are on most other foam pieces and have been for a while now. I'll include an image of the MX mirror damper pads so you can see.

The "tri-dot" battery converter (which turns a #675 hearing aid battery into a clone of the old PX-13 type mercury cell) is still being made although as demand for this type of battery plummets, it is becoming hard to find expired batteries to recycle. They're all made in China and the Chinese have finally realized they were making too many. I expect to see this shape/size of battery to disappear soon.

So again a big thanks for everyone who's been supporting the project. Please tell me if you have any questions, concerns or if you just want to talk bad about the many parasites who continue to copy my kits and plagiarize my instructions.
Best regards,
Jon

A Proper Goodbye to Pentax
Posted By EdMaximus

About 2 years ago, I posted a thread on here that I was leaving Pentax. But from that time on, I was still using my Pentax gears for all my personal work and rent Canon /Sony for some client works.
A few months ago, I decided to buy into Sony's system with the A7r III. I haven't been using my Pentax kit since then and I'm about to post it on the marketplace.
So this is the real goodbye to the brand and community that helped me become a photographer.

My first camera was the Pentax K100D. I bought into Pentax in 2009 after I stumbled on Ben Kanarek's work which led me to this forum. Below is the only photo I have left from using that camera.

K100D, Takumar 135mm

I then made the jump to the Pentax K-7. That was the first time I felt like I could actually do photography for a living. I used to live in Central Florida and drive down to Miami to shoot models.

K-7, FA77mm (all three shots)

I switched to the K-5 once I felt like the K-7 was limiting my work. That probably was a lie back then but buying it wasn't a bad decision.

K-5, DA 40mm (left), FA 77mm (right)

I bought the K3 right after I moved to NYC in 2014. That was when I started to take photography seriously. A majority of my work with this camera was for fashion magazines and my personal projects which ended up in many fine art publications.

K-3, FA 77mm (left) | DA 40mm (mid) | DA 40mm (right)

I almost gave up on Pentax after the K3 to move to a full-frame system. Then the K-1 came out. I bought one in late 2016 and thought it was the perfect camera until I started doing jobs that were requiring tethering. This camera has been responsible for my best work so far. Same with the FA 77mm. I would say 70% of the photos in my current portfolio were shot with that lens/camera combo.

K-1, D FA 24-70mm (left) | FA 77mm (right)

I'm now shooting with Sony exclusively. The A7RIII has been the most impressive camera I've ever used. But it still doesn't have that Pentax feeling in my hand. If someone getting in photography ask me for camera recommendation, I'll most likely still recommend Pentax (with a few caveat)... I hope Ricoh keep investing in the brand... Big thanks to this community for existing and for being nice when I used to post on here years quite a bit... And keep shooting!

ATTENTION MELBOURNE APS-C SHOOTERS: DFA* 50-135 cheap

I've just come from the JB-hifi Discount Camera store in Elizabeth Street Melbourne (next door to Michael's; not the bigger general JB store a few doors further south). They have a NEW Pentax DA* 50-135 SDM AW for sale with ticket price $487. However, they are actually having a further 50% sale on that, so it's $243.50! The Pentax web-store price is $1299.

It's amongst assorted sale lenses near the stairs at the back of the shop.

I was of course tempted by the price, but the 50-135 is just not a lens I need. Rather than buy it at a steal and have it sit on my shelf unused, I would rather some keen PF member snapped it up.

Good luck. First come first served.

P.S.: I could have bought it just to sell at a huge profit, but that didn't seem honourable.

What is your "Lens of the Year 2018"

Tought question. I spent 2018 shooting Single In Challenge with M series primes. It took most of my free time, so didn't shoot much otherwise. So I have 12 lenses to choose from and I shot a month with each. I admit weather has a lot to do with my choise, as I choose Miss July, M40/2.8, to be the lens of the year. Also can't underestimate the effect of summer holiday for the choice :D

But it's not just the weather. Tiny pancake lens is fun to carry around in K5. Lightweight and compact. I enjoy the focal lenght on crop body. It's quite comfortable for general shooting. I took two short trips with it this year, on one it was my main lens and on the other the only lens, and it proved to be a good choise, if you want to travel light. It's not even close to sharpest lens I've used during the year, but I really like the rendering.

I would also like to mention M100/4 macro, as I got it as a gift last Xmas from PF member and I took the shot of year with it in June.

Looking at your photos throughout the year, you must have many favorite photos and notice what lens helps produce those photos.

Please share:
  • 1 or 2 of the lens helps you produce many of your favorite photo in 2018.

  • post the top 3 images produced by the lens or lenses you mention.

  • a link to your gallery.

I hope your information can help us (me) make a decision when purchasing new gears in the year to come.

Have a happy new year and I hope you all have a wonderful year ahead.

-edit-
Not to be confused with a list of new lenses in 2018. This post is just another way for you to show your work and talk about your beloved lenses. It could be the lens you used the most in 2018. A legacy lense you just discovered in 2018. A lens helps push you to a next new level this year. The lense makes you WOW. The lense that helps you won an award in 2018. After all, it is "your" lense of the year. :)

I think at the top end they can sell more fullframe camera's for Top end $ then aps-c. On the other hand, I just think the full-frame is deeper into the development then thè aps-c and thus earlier to market. But I know nothing!

Bokeh comparisons with different focal lengths

So I have just got myself a Super Tak 85mm f1.8 and wanted to try and compare bokeh results from what I think of as my portrait lenses.

Bokeh is a hard thing to compare objectively.

But I think the take home from here is the longer the focal length the smoother the bokeh and the fact that focal length tends to override the effects of having a fast lens used wide open.

And of course the longer focal length tends to give a less distorted perspective of the subject.

I feel the moral of the story is go out and get yourself a 135 rather than paying over the odds for a fast lens.
Note that the 105 here gets some of its smooth look because the focused subject is framed a little larger meaning the background is relatively speaking further away.
First post has the lenses wide open

Surprised to find little contributions to this thread, as this really is a very fine lens, particularly on APS-C cameras, where it is sharp and contrasty edge-to-edge throughout its range.

Buy K-1 on sale? or wait for possible K-1 II sale? or maybe new FF next year?

OK, I decided I couldn't pass on this sale this time around after I missed it by debating it too long the first time around. I didn't expect there were any new K-1's left for them to sell.
A K-1 bundle is on the way from Adorama along with a sandisk extreme pro 128gb card.
I decided $400 was just too big a price jump to go to the discounted K-1 II, its almost a 25% bump. I am guessing since I am moving up from an original K-5 I will never notice the difference between the two.
Good I bought a DFA 24-70F2.8 last time they went on sale for under $1000 so at least I have a lens worth the quality of the K-1.

I've been waiting on this camera since I was still shooting with a Super Program and the IstD first was announced.
I think its been long enough already.
