Thx!
No Kp problems yet fortunately, as I am indeed restricting the screen movement.
Nonetheless frustrating, when you read the description of these design faults, that's where my annoying sits.

Cheers, Gerard
(And I did replace the K30 solenoid myself, at least got big respect from my family.)

Not much to add here, but as your cat is in 'panorama', how did you crop the pic?
I have the SMC version and for traveling I just love the 15/18-135 combo. As others have stated, backlit pictures are a strong point, also in landscapes.
I also found one 'architectural' pic in my collection. Both at f8......

Thanks for your very useful advice! And very beautiful pictures too,
I had some Minke whales under my kayak (guided tour) in the St Lawrence, was a great experience!
@Thor Sanchez; I was ridiculing the crime threats, I should have added a smiley. Don't worry, my Kp will travel!

What Lens for Venice with a Pentax k70?

Was there in 2022, tourism hadn't picked up fully so I was lucky. I second most of the above advice. I used my Siggy 10-20 a lot, though not always in the extreme WA. My second used lens was the 16-85, I think the 16-45 will be perfect for shots from the boats. But you might want to go wider in the narrow streets and canals. As mentioned, the 10-20's are a steal nowadays, at least in Europe. Bringing a bright lens for night shots is a good idea, I used my Sigma 30/1.4 for that, with your K70 the macro 35 should give you good shots.
Enjoy!

Grtz Gerard

PS I noticed you were enquiring about a 16-85 in another topic. As others have mentioned it is a great lens. But, considering Venice, I strongly advice you to consider a wide angle!

Another very satisfied user of the Siggy 50-150 here.
I 've never owned a 50-135 so can't compare, but no complaints about the focussing or the bokeh.
And yes, the exterior finish is 'Sigmatic'
However, my used copy was about half the price of a used 50-135, but of course I could have been lucky....

I did this trip last summer, a car-bicycle combo. Travelled LA->SF by car and then went back for some bike rides along the route. Because of the bike I left my Kp back home and took my (repaired) K30 with the proven combo 15ltd and 18-135. Didn't run into situations that I couldn't handle, apart from an evening boat trip in SF bay. Used the 15 almost exclusively for street shots (and Hearst Castle!), the 18-135 stood up to its reputation and was perfect for the rest. Wildlife (seamamals) included, but they come in really close!
Have fun, Gerard

Until recently only used my 18-135 on moving subjects paired with my K30, with rather disapointing results. Last Sunday it was coupled to my Kp, oh boy was I positively surprised! Not razor sharp but way above expectations!

Whilst using a K200 I had a colleague using a Canon 5, and I was quite convinced I needed full frame (but didn't want to spend the money)
Now reading these comments (thx guys) and owning a Kp I am happy that I decided once more to stick to crop.
And talking about dogs and Iphones, this one taken with a second generation SE:
(of course it would have been even better with my Kp, but then I didn't have it with me)

OK, first guten Rutsch like they say over here!
Xmas story being told; for about one and a half year I had been watching the markets, local and the Bay, for an affordable 400 to make a gentle start into birding. And then end of November, within 3 days (!) both a Sigma 400/5,6 APO V3 and a Tokina 400mm f5.6 ATX came on sale here locally, with only €25 between them! On PF there doesn't seem much between them, both screwdrive, both need stopping down, both collar. Sigma has a limiter though. I decided on the Tokina because it was within cycling distance and could therefore be inspected. Happy!

Steve McCurry XL exhibition in Vienna (was Graz) - Austria

Visited the above mentioned exhibition today and it blew me away! It is (for me that is) a totally new concept of presenting the pictures. They are 'printed' on transparencies, back lit by (I suppose) LED and are mostly in size 4 x 2,5 METRES! And some are even printed larger.
Pictures are hanging down in a large totally black hall, as if looking down on the human visitors. I have never seen anything like it, for me this was exposition 2.0. Obviously his colorful pictures seem made for this processing, but still.
Have a look at my Flickr for a short impression:

Taschen sale photography books

Taschen books are running their yearly sale, with some very attractive offers.

'Geneses' by SEBASTIÃO SALGADO for €/£ 30, which is an absolute steal for this epic book
In the series 'Bibliotheca Universalis' there's a three for two offer; amongst others:
Photo Icons. 50 Landmark Photographs and Their Stories and
A History of Photography. From 1839 to the Present, which is apparently a companion book to a running exhibition in the Tate's London.

See their website taschen.com, prices mentioned correct in Austria, UK, Germany, check your local site (country flag upper left corner)
No affiliation :):) and if considered inappropriate, mods please feel free to remove

Repair K-50 vs new one
Posted By FotoGekko
Replies: 30

As I recently went through the same route (although be it with a defect K30) here's my personal view. I had already decided to do a self repair, bought a broken K10 for that purpose. Then around Xmas the Kp was heavily discounted in the Netherlands, so I jumped it. (After the handling of solenoid proces by Pentax I decided no K70 for me)
The output of the Kp is outstanding, very clean Jpeg's, I am much less inclined to shoot RAW now and the low light performance is way better than my old K30.
I am still trying to get to 'grips' (pun intended) with the ergonomics though and the K30, which I have repaired in the meantime, fits my large hands just better. The funny thing is I was quite convinced the Kp was heavier, but there's only a few grams difference.
So my two cents.....

Good luck with you decision!

PS The repair is not to bad and well documented, but you do need a pencil soldering iron. On Willhaben.at there is a IstDL2 including a 28-80 and a 35-105 on offer for €50, which will give you 2 solenoids. A good price, you could sell on the second one!

Thanks,

I already feared so, but couldn't find the exact info.
The whole lot will go to the eternal fields then, (unless a K10 owner wants it for just the postage)

K10 focussing screen any use?
Posted By FotoGekko

OK, after successfully swapping the solenoid of a dead K10 into my K30, I just found out that the donor K10 has a microprism diagonal split focussing screen. Can I put that to any use?
From searching the forum I get the impression that the K10 screen is different from the later models. In one of the threads Steve Brot states for instance: 'The instruction photos on focusingscreen.com show a K10 which installs opposite of the one for your K30'
Must say up to now didn't really mis an old type screen. I do have some fast MF lenses however and wouldn't mind experimenting a bit.
I still have an old K200 as well, would that fit?
I bought the dead K10 in the Netherlands and can't contact the seller any more, so haven't got a clue what 'mark' FS it is.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Cheers, Gerard
