I don't think we can get that in the UK but I have tried WD in the same manner but that didn't work. I also tried watchmaker's oil thinned with alcohol but that didn't work either. I did both over a week putting a few spots on each day.
All five screws seem well and truly stuck :-(

Ok thanks. I tried Acetone, Iso Propyl and Meths. I also held a soldering iron on each screw until it was almost red hot (took ages) and they still didn't shift. The screws are corroded judging from the heads and the self timer. The screws holding the self timer boss are rusted solid and the front plate screws had gone green but cleaned up ok to get a screwdriver in. I have a NOS front plate to fit in its place but didn't have the screws for it.
Although the front plate has bad corrosion the top and bottom of the camera are fine and all the gear wheels etc. are corrosion free.

That's my guess but wanted to be sure, it would be great to find some genuine N.O.S from somewhere. Like you, I expected the spares lists to specify but so far haven't found one that does. My guess is m1.7 or M2 countersunk brass

Hi all,
I need to get the front plate off a Spotmatic II but every one of the 5 screws is locked solid. I've tried fluids and heat but nothing frees them. I am going to have to drill the heads out to get the plate off.
My question is, what are the details of the screws as I need to buy replacements to put the plate back. I don't have any other Spotmatics to use as a reference.
Thanks
Nick

I must be blind Steve, I have read from page 27 onward and still can't see where the tolerances are quoted. ---------- Post added 02-29-20 at 12:57 AM ----------
It's a great piece of kit. You really need to make up a jig to hold the camera and light source, though. A few folk seem to have made the jig from lego

Thanks Steve, I can't see a tolerance range quoted only millisecond equivalents, unless I can't see the wood for the trees. I have a generic chart which gives a range e.g. 1/1000 should be acceptable between 0.70 and 1.30 milliseconds, I may use that if getting spot on is impossible.
I'm using a Phochron XA tester with the twin curtain sensor as it gives 1st and 2nd curtain readings. This is the link Phochron XA- hand held shutter evaluation
It works well and you can self check the calibration too. It will work with any camera as long as you can get to the back of the camera, some older rangefinders bottom load so they can't be checked without disassembly.

Hi,
Does any have the shutter speed adjustment tolerances for a Spotmatic SPII please? The service book has the procedure and says to adjust within tolerance but I can't see what the tolerance range is.
I can adjust to what I consider acceptable but would like to adjust to factory spec if at all possible.
Thanks

Thanks, won't be too long before I get out shooting. Just need to renew the light seals and it'll be ready, has been a delay as life has got in the way a little.

I use a Leica M2 along with a Spotmatic and S1a, the Pentax's are just as smooth as the Leica, if not a tad smoother. Leica has a reputation for a "buttery" smooth wind-on, the Pentax is possibly a little bit smoother still. I rate the standard of the cameras and lenses as being roughly equal to a Leica. I am also a Nikon collector and the Pentax handling is far superior to a Nikon of the same period.
I think these early Pentax models are real "sleepers" and one day the market will wake up to it.

It performs quite well and was a popular lens in its day. The problem with most of them now, is the helical grease has gone hard and the focus stiffens right up. Folk then squirt thin oil in to free up the focus and the oil sooner or later ends up on the aperture blades.

Just a follow up, it was all sorted with a couple of small blobs of nail varnish and working fine. Only small issue was setting the infinity focus point but that doesn't take long.

First buy a set of JIS screwdrivers, although the screws are slotted these drivers have a very thin blade which will properly fit the screws on the base plate. You will also need some thin oil like watchmakers oil, available on ebay cheaply. Take off the base plate, there should be a small plastic spacer on the bottom of the rewind button that falls off easily, so keep an eye on that. This video gives the instructions (it's an SV but is the same as the S1a). If you are lucky and the mirror only sticks every so often just a tiny drop ( I mean tiny) of oil on spindles and teeth of the two dark cogs will do the job, if not follow the video. It's very common on this series of cameras.

Thanks Steve, are you a fan of the S1a? I like them because they are solid and simple, nothing much to go wrong and just do the job. Once I realised the stuck mirror was such a simple fix, I was happy to buy faulty ones at a cheaper price.

Oh dear, oh dear :-) I seem to have bought a few more Pentax cameras. To be fair they were cheap on Ebay and mostly faulty with sticky mirror issue. Cured that and all now work, just need light seals replaced.

I've looked through a loupe at other threads and I can see signs that it has been used before. I'll do the same I think, I tend to use clear nail varnish and it has worked before.

Thanks PJ, I had read that article buy completely missed that comment, probably because it was referring to a different ring and I didn't make the connection. Yes, if one ring was secured by a dab of varnish, others might have been too. I'll try 4 dabs of varnish (it's a big ring) and see what happens.
Cheers

Hi all,
Does anybody have detailed experience of repairing a Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50/2.8 Zebra M42 please? This came to me with sticking aperture blades and a loose focus ring. The lens was very oily/greasy from someone else's botched previous attempt and the blades were flooded. I have sorted that but can't stop the focus ring loosening. If you look at the image the focus ring is secured by a notched spanning wrench ring (the outer notched ring). When I tighten the ring and then turn the focus it loosens again and repeated movement of the focus ring just undoes the the ring. I am reluctant to use more than a smear of oil on the mating surface for obvious reasons.
It is almost like there is a thin slip ring missing or the notched ring needs to have thread lock to stop it moving. This type of lens is new to me and I haven't stripped one before. I have looked at a schematic which suggests there isn't a part missing but I can't work out how to stop the ring unscrewing :-( .
Anyone know the answer please?
Thanks Nick

Thanks Jono, I have the 55/f2 already and a Carl Zeis Jena Tessar on the way. They'll get a good outing once I have sorted the lights seals, which are also on the way. I have another S1a (with meter) and an SPII coming too :-)

It's a decent light meter and does incident too. I don't think it will take a bashing but otherwise does a fair job
