Thanks. I love the look of Yashica TLR's, and would love to find one myself one day.

One of my smallest, and definitely my oldest film camera, the Kombi. About 41mm x 41mm x 52mm (1-5/8in x 1-5/8in x 2in). Shutter still works. |

Stopped by this restaurant to find it closed. Walked around to the back door. It was closed for good. No oysters today. |

Are you using manual mode? Anything else (Av, TV, Auto, etc) doesn't seem to work with a M lens on my K-X

After doing some reading about off-camera flash, I bought a relatively inexpensive wireless trigger kit. Here is my first attempt at using it with my Vivitar 550FD hand-held.
I am not sure why the Metz flash does not fire with this trigger, but I shall keep trying. I still suspect something is goofy with that flash.

I was not playing. Most all tubes have heater filaments that glow a little regardless of whether you are playing or not.

I always put a pony first, because it makes the rest of the items on my wish list seem more reasonable.

I have more than a dozen saxophones, and this one (abt. 1969) is my only Selmer, but definitely my favorite. Sounds marvelous with a vintage Brilhart Level-Aire mouthpiece.

Yes, this helps a lot. I watched several videos about real estate and portrait photography which explained the use of off-camera flash even further.
I have all kinds of ideas now... I thought this was going to be an inexpensive hobby.

Thanks. Looks quite interesting. Also probably not something I can justify purchasing...yet.
What is the difference between using an off-camera wireless flash and using some kind of stationary light?

I don't know why, but it works when the flash mode is set to wireless, but becomes unpredictable when set to standard.
This makes me curious about wireless flashes. What would be the advantage to using a wireless flash? I have a difficult time imagining how I would use one if it is not somehow attached to my camera.

I have had a breakthrough after reading some bits in the K20D manual. It says the P-TTL auto mode for external flash is enabled when the flash mode is set to wireless. I set the flash mode to wireless and it seemingly works. I have tried in green mode, P, and Av all with good success.
This stirs up a whole bunch of other questions about wireless flashes...I think I have more reading in store for me.

The firmware is up to date on the camera. I believe the flash is actually older than the camera. It may very well be incompatible.

Thanks, you are absolutely correct about the anodized coating being conductive. The contacts are as clean as they can be. I just think the camera and flash do not interact correctly. It fires, but in program, green mode, Av, Tv, M, and X, there is nothing automatic about the exposure. I have found simply using manual mode, setting my shutter speed at 1/60 or 1/90 and adjusting the aperture thru trial and error I can get reasonable pictures. I'm about to stash them back in the closet and go back to avoiding flash photography altogether.

VERY helpful. I have searched for years for a manual for the Metz flash. It did not come with one when I bought it.
I also started reading something called "The Pentax Digital Camera Flash Lighting System" by Nigel McGregor. He mentions the use of the "Green Button" in manual mode. So nice to finally see what that button does. I'm going to have to spend some time reading the K20D manual as well. It's similar to the K-X in many ways, but has at least 19% more things to confuse me.
A few more questions while I have your attention: Would a lens hood such as the one on my DA 17-70mm lens somehow interfere with the infrared sensor thingy on the front of the Metz flash? Are either of my flash units considered off-camera flashes, or is that something entirely different?
Thanks so much.

I'm not sure what P-TTL is. How would I go about using the Metz flash in anything other than manual mode with the K20D?

Thanks for your help.
I sanded a spot on the inside edge of the hot shoe. Both flashes now seem to fire consistently. There's not much automatic with them, I still have to go full manual and experiment to get the right exposure. That's kind of what I have always done with these flashes. The 550FD actually does have settings which suggest f-stop and distances based on ISO, the Metz has no settings whatsoever.
At least I didn't burn thru several rolls of film to get a handle on where my settings need to be.

I think I recall checking it several years ago. Somewhere between 4 and 5 volts... but I can't swear to it.

True, but the ground contact on both of my flashes only touches the inside edge of the painted rail. I can't see the spring clips being able to contact the flash in any way.
