A Pentax light seal dimensions thread

Hi, I’m looking to replace the light seals on quite a few Pentax bodies myself. I’ve bought and used kits fine before, but as I have so many to do, I want to buy the foams in sheet form and cut my own. So… sizes…

I need to collect and record any data/dimensions and figured here might be a good place to get and share that data.

If anyone has experience cutting seals successfully, please share your findings below.

P30t keeps winding on...

Evening. My P30T with this problem seems to be fixed for now.

I should say first: I’ve not actually been able to find which lever, washer, or pawl was sticking.

However with the bottom removed, it’s clear which part should spring back when returning the advance lever. Take a look at the first image earlier in this thread (page 1), it’s the black pawl with the horizontal arrow pointing to it. I sat for half an hour winding on, then returning the lever very slowly while putting some pressure on the pawl to make it seat in the chromed sprocket.

After the first 10 mins it started to re-seat on its own, but only if the advance lever was VERY slowly returned. When it did work, I could hear an additional click on top of the sound the little sprung pawl makes (top left).

After another 15 mins, maybe 100 actuations later, it was working every time, even if I let the advance lever snap back as fast as it could.

I suspect the 15 years of not being used has caused this problem. I’ve now loaded film and will report back if the problem returns!

Don't think I've shared anything shot with a Pentax on here before...

This pic was taken at a Spectacle of Light event at Sudeley Castle (Tudor king Henry VIII's castle, 6th wife Catherine Parr lived and died there) just down the road from us.

I'm quite happy with the colour and exposure, not happy with the flatbed scan

Saw these while visiting a cabinet make friend, thought they'd look nice on some pushed grain. Shame I missed the focus!

DX re-coding solution

Had an idea recently for a more permanent solution to changing a film’s DX code than tin-foil or fairly expensive stickers.
I made it last week but have been waiting to use up a film in my P30t before I could test it.

It mostly explained by the attached photos, but here are some notes.
  • 0.4mm aluminium sheet was the thinnest they had in my local hobby store. I plan on trying .3mm sometime.

  • Choice of tape matters. Very soft PVC tape can puncture, and is also quite thick. Cheap electrical tape is probably better. Best would be to block-out the code with etch-primer and a suitable hard shell paint I think. Future version :)

  • The length of the piece of aluminium’s important as you want it to butt-up to the inside corner to prevent the shim rotating when the film is inserted.

  • Choice of former, in my case a socket, is a bit hit and miss. You want to over curl it and let it spring back to the final size.

  • I taped the sheet to the former before rolling with duck-tape.

...now someone’s going to tell me these are already available online or something right?!

Two-part case for P30T

Took delivery today. The ‘P30’ case, marked P-S (presumably P-series, short version?) fits the P30T ok.
And I needn’t have worried about the screw attachment because it doesn’t have a hole in the base for one.

It’s ok for a 50mm M lens, or maybe a very short zoom.

B&W Developer starter kits

Hi, I'd like to have a go at developing my own B&W film.
I see that there are a few 'starter kits' out there, ranging from about £50 to £350 depending on what you get.
I also see that Ilford's 'Simplicity' sachets seem like a good way to get enough chemicals for a 'do I want to actually do this?' test.

Does anyone have any experience with a kit? Patterson, AG, AP and others offer them.

Are there things that aren't in the kits which experience tells you I'd need? I have a basement that would be suitable for a dark space to work in.

Are there things that ARE in the kits which aren't really necessary, or aren't usually of good enough quality?

Basically I'd like some general advice on getting started, kit wise.

Cheers!

Thought it might be interesting to see your pics taken - accidentally or intentionally - with a fungus-damaged lens, and the effect it's had.

Who's brave enough to share? :D

Haha! I name it FlaviusFluff, or Cygnus-X-B253 to give it the official designation.

I MAY not have cleaned anything before anything 😬

Aye I’ve struggled to find an MC one at 49mm (possible if I’m happy to wait a couple of weeks for delivery). I might try some non-coated.

P.s thanks for the replies so long after the OP.

Hi, I'm Ben from Gloucestershire, UK.
First got into film when I was about 10 and grandfather gave me one of his brood, a Praktica PLC2 with flash and a couple of lenses. He'd moved onto Pentax (P30T) and some more lenses, and still used an Exacta.
I used the Praktica for quite a few years, then went OM10 for a short while (didn't like it, can't put finger on why) then a Nikon D70 and sort of fell out of love with photography (Digital, instant gratification, firing off 50 frames in hit-n-miss fashion until I got something passable, no love).
Generation iPhonography hits and any love or craft I had for photography is forgotten for another 10 years. Until now.

Last month on a visit to a seldom seen aunt in Cornwall I was given Grandad's Exacta and the P30T with lenses and bags etc. I had no idea it was all still around seeing that he died in 2004 or something! Sadly the P30T is near-dead, sticky shutter and suspect metering, but I love the size/weight and wanted to make use of the lenses.
Searched around for opinions on small light Pentax SLRs, found an ME Super in great nick on eBay 3 weeks ago and bought it. While I waited for the Pentax to arrive I stuck some HP5 in the Exacta and took it, along with a light meter (never used one previously!) to an 'American classics' themed event at the local hill-climb and enjoyed every minute of it! Forgive me for sharing some Exacta shots on a Pentax forum, but honestly I was IN LOVE with film again within about 10 minutes, and surprised that any of them came out of this 41 year old camera with very rusty user.

The first roll of film through the ME Super is going to be developed tomorrow, can't wait!

(the '32 Roadster is the first pic I took with camera. The Indian is my favourite. The panned Vixen is technically terrible - I clearly need to practice panning and focus - but I love that it looks like it was taken back in '67)

Cheers.

Edit: I scanned these with a negative scanner I borrowed, and now see I didn't crop them very well! gahhh.
Edit 2: Just remembered, I pushed EV by +1 in PotatoShop for all of the images - really need to learn how to use that light meter - and sharpened the hot-rod a little. Cheating! Not an instant ban I hope ;)
