You never have? I salute your good luck then. I don't quite understand your meaning though.

You prefer not to use it. If something you purchased fails during the warranty period, would you not have it repaired under warranty? What alternative is there? Would you rather pay to have it repaired yourself, or simply discard it and buy another? Sorry, I'm not being disparaging, or dismissive, I'm just not really sure what you mean. I think we would all prefer not to have the need to utilise a manufacturers warranty.

I'd simply like to know that if something I purchase fails, I have recourse to have it remedied, not at my expense.

I get everything delivered to my work. It's a large business (one of the largest in the city) so we have our own mailroom. We have a real problem here (NZ in general I believe) with couriers either not bothering to even attempt to deliver (my work mate has a security camera and has captured couriers driving up and leaving a "could not deliver" card in the mailbox, without ever going onto the property!) or signing for packages themselves and leaving them on the doorstep.

There's no way I want $1300 worth of DSLR sitting on the doorstep for all and sundry to see for several hours!

My Mum used to work in the mailroom, so they let me know when a package comes in for me. :)

Yeah. It probably would have gotten to me quicker. And been cheaper.

When I was comparing prices, there was very little difference between buying here or from the US. By the time I pulled the trigger, the local price had gone up by $150, and then the K-70 price dropped at B&H. Could have saved myself $250.

The price you pay for living here, I guess. Remoteness and small population means we pay a premium. Although I was pleasantly surprised to find local retailers stocking Peak Design accessories for cheaper than I could get direct from the Peak Design website. Got a Peak Design Slide for NZ$89. It's NZ$105 on the website (before shipping).

What's the deal with Pentax warranty if you buy from overseas?

We were lucky. The photography club at my high school was run by a local professional photographer. So not only did we learn the technical aspects of developing film and photos, he arranged outings for us to shoot at various locations/events/situations.

We visited the remnants of an old mining works. One of those photos I posted to the Weekly Photo Challenge 476 - Minimalistic Imagery. Didn't get any likes, although I did only post it an hour before the deadline!

I also remember going to a local event, like a street fair, and he also arranged for us to do a shoot in the CBD with a model. A great learning experience. I was 16 or 17 at the time.

This was taken in 1988, when I was a high school student.

Pentax Spotmatic, probably Ilford film, self developed and printed. It's part of an old mining works here in New Zealand.

Thanks all.

Yeah, I can't wait.

Thanks Ross. I've read quite a lot of the Kiwi thread. Seems like a nice vibrant community.

I've just dug out the old SF7 to confirm which Tokina Lenses I have. Looks like I made a half decent choice back in the day.

I've got the Tokina AF SD 28-70mm f3.5-4.5 and the Tokina AF 70-210mm f4.0-5.6 which both are fairly favourably reviewed in the Third-Party Lens Reviews.

I do remember I opted for the Tokina lenses as they were cheaper than the Pentax lenses. A mate of mine also got an SF7 about the same time and he opted for the Pentax lenses. I think they were Pentax FA series lenses. I should ask him if he still has them. :)

Ah, the good old Wanaka tree.

Did you have to shoulder your way through a phalanx of tourists and instagrammers to get a pic?

It really is an amazing place though. I live in the North Island and the landscapes are just so different. I went to Wanaka and Queenstown on my honeymoon (a long time ago now, 25 years to be exact) and one of the lasting memories I have was hiking up to a lookout over Lake Wanaka. Absolutely breathtaking. I think it may have been Diamond Lake/Rocky mountain lookout.

Going to Singapore in January. Looking forward to some great photographic opportunities.

Been lurking for a while and finally joined the forum today.

Many (many,) years ago, when I was a high school student, I joined our school's Photography club. With my Dad's Spotmatic, I shot and developed B&W. I can't say for certain, but I suspect it had the Super Takumar 1.4/50mm lens.

Then, in my Uni days, I bought an SF7, with Tokina 28-70 and 70-210 zooms. Served me well for years and years until digital cameras came along and killed off shooting on film for the masses.

So now, 30 years later, I'm finally in a position to join the DSLR world. I've had a few cheap point and shoot digital cameras over the years, none of which I used for anything other than family snaps and holiday pictures. Now those have fallen by the wayside for phone cameras.

I haven't done any "photography" in a long time.

I've purchased a K-70. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for it to get to me (the NZ distributor had no K-70s in stock!). I can't wait.

I'll agree with that. You can count the number of retailers selling Pentax in New Zealand on one hand.

As for the distributor here, I purchased a K-70 on the 21st of October, the distributor had no K-70s in stock. I'm still waiting. :(

The Rare and Wonderful Pentax GPS

This is my first post on the forum! :)

It does seem a shame that GPS isn't included in more DSLR cameras.

I've purchased my first DSLR, a K-70 (still waiting for it to arrive. The NZ distributor is out of stock, unfortunately), and I'd like to be able to tag the images with GPS data.

Luckily, I'm a systems administrator during the day :), so I've coded my way around the problem.

I've written a python program that can import GPS data captured from an app on my android phone, and match up the date and time in the EXIF data to a point in the GPS stream and add the GPS data to the EXIF.

The idea is that, when I'm out and about with my camera, I just start the android app recording the GPS data, 1 data point per second, and leave it going. Even at 1 data point per second, you could leave if running most of the day and it's not that much data.

I've tested it with some sample K-70 images and it works well enough. As I haven't got my camera yet (the wait is killing me!) it hasn't been tested in anger yet.
