You've reminded me of that witches scene :). I was taken to the pictures as part of my GCE English literature class to see it( the film, not just the naked witches! )........ a great film for a group of troublesome teenagers to watch.

We were also taken to see a science fiction film where our teacher outlined the storyline as that of the "Fantastic Voyage", we were all well and truly looking forward to seeing that. Unfortunately she was a bit confused and we sat through 45 minutes of men in chimpanzee suits before eventually arriving into space for the following 2 hours of bewildering and confusing boredom.................. she'd taken us to see "2001 - a space odyssey"!

I guess it was preparation for the first time I saw David Lynch's "Eraserhead", now that takes some understanding.

Thanks Billy............ I've made a quick mod from your suggestion :)

Couldn't help but notice your location I used to travel out to your state in the mid 90's and stay in Sturbridge where the company we did work for was based. It's a beautiful place, wish I'd moved out there.............. ah hindsight how wonderful!

Dark and menacing but a very benign place to walk, peaceful. I have several similar shots to this but most have little to no cloud, it's luck of the draw on the day as I never plan these as photography trips, merely walks. The other thing that is welcome is the lack of con trails! That is partly affected by the jetstream which is often overhead at some part of UK and you see more flights taking advantage of it.......... and ruining peoples photos .

Thanks to both of you for your replies. This area is littered with castles being a part of Britain that was often fought over by the English and Scots. Well there was no telly in those days they had to have something to fill the day :)

Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!
All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!
All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!

Well maybe not as he'd be 150mls too far south and three centuries too late :D Having said that, Roman Polanski did film his version of Macbeth just 10mls up the coast from here( Bamburgh and Lindisfarne ). This is a colour image I took in 2011 with Samsung GX-10, de-saturated and with brightness/contrast adjusted accordingly. The location is Dunstanburgh castle( 14th Century ) in Northumberland and the tower on the image is known as Lilburn Tower. The tower sits on an outcrop of the Whin Sill a volcanic remnant that runs diagonally across the county. Just to the left of the tower off the side of the image is a nice crescent shaped cliff of basalt like rock with pillar formations( similar to giants causeway but on tiny scale ). Quite atmospheric but on a busy day the walk to the castle resembles a veritable pilgrimage :) , not good for photo opportunities but still a nice day out. Personally this image is how I like it, although I have got colour vision!

Yes Joan Baez has a lovely voice. As a kid( my mother wasn't a nanny goat! ) we would listen to the Carpenters in the car on 8-track cartridge player......... Karen Carpenter, another voice hard not to fall in love with. I very much like Leonard Cohen and I find his duet with Julie Felix linked below has two wonderful voices overlaid with the genuine feelings between them and the eye to eye contact throughout the song. They were good friends. The song "Winter Lady" used at the sad ending of the western McCabe and Mrs Miller( Warren Beatty and Julie Christie ) is also moving.

Hey thats no way to say goodbye :-

Thanks Jeff. Yes there is all too much doom and gloom at present caused by the tiniest percentage of humanity( used loosely ) upon the remaining majority....... beggars belief to be honest and all of this on the back of a still existent pandemic. Most of us just want good food, good health, a warm bed and to give and receive love from others around us...... bizarrely we don't have the urge or desire to invade other countries! John Lennon's "Imagine" seems an appropriate song for one world leader to learn and observe.

Thanks Tony. It's surprising how widespread the forum members are. The replies above reflect this from USA to UK to Australia, the benefit of the internet to unite people with similar interests.

I should have created a different post title I didn't realise it was so popular! :)

Thanks for all of your replies K2 to K50, MikeNArk, angkymac. I have now listened to Joan Baez singing "Hello in there", very nice voice and lyrics. I think of her from the soundtrack of "Silent Running"..... not a submarine film :-) but a science fiction film with an environmental message pertinent to us today. It's either a sign of old age coming on, or a sign of the state of the industry, that I constantly have to look back to good music. There seemed such musical class and talent in the 60's + 70's, many of whom are still performing.

I would see this gentleman and his friends sitting on a bench regularly, a bit like Simon and Garfunkels old men in the song. I struck up a conversation and asked if I could take their photograph and they obliged. I gave them framed copies to keep and in doing so was asked by Mr D in the posted image if I would photograph him with his dog. It was a spur of the moment request and I had my camera with me so proceeded to attempt a portrait I guess. The dog was extremely lively and finding a space away from the clutter of our modern lives was hard, there's nearly always parked cars and bins in line of sight. Anyway I tried to make the best of a bad job and just at the instant of taking the shot I made an audible clicking sound and instantly got the dogs attention for a second. Mr D was a ex-merchant navy seaman and had lots to talk about. As much as I am not a people person, preferring wildlife, I find that I really enjoy chatting and getting to know people and their life stories, then trying to capture some of that in a photograph. Sadly Mr D and his friends are no longer with us and the bench now sits totally unoccupied....... "winter companions the old men". The image dates back to 2005 but sticks in my mind hence why I thought of posting it.

The camera, lumix fz-20, was my first foray into digital and still sits beside me and gets used on my cycle rides from time to time..... safer than crashing with a DSLR! In daylight it took surprisingly good, sharp images and only 5Mp.

Yes Kevin I see your point re: slightly not horizontal, the lampost at right hand side shows that to some degree. A small crop may well fix that without too much loss to the overall image.

This was originally a colour image that I converted to B+W and resized slightly. I'd taken one image prior to this but walked further along the jetty as I wanted to get the curve of the jetty, shadows and lamp positions just as I liked them. Unbeknownst to me there were three seagulls flying to their roost as this was approaching twilight, late afternoon. The pure chance of everything falling into place with the seagulls balancing the three lampposts and the curves etc was not far off unrepeatable...... though I'd prefer the seagull positions to reflect those of the the lampposts! This dates back to 2007 when I'd only had the GX-10 a couple of months and was still quite taken by it's image quality( well I was used to lumix fx-20 so a bit of a step up :) ). Now owning a K-70 the image quality and ISO performance is in a different league but the probability of getting a similar image is small and simply pure luck. I was digging around my old images on a nostalgia trip and thought I'd post it having been looking at other bits and pieces on the forum.

Unfortunate Samsung GX-10 aperture problem

hi Not a Number

That photograph of the module is useful as it lets me see how this works mechanically, I haven't found any good images of this area of the camera. The phrase "not a trivial task" wasn't what I was hoping to see .

I'll do more research then if it's a runner I'll see if it's available in the uk too.

Edit: I've now viewed the photos and unfortunately this unit doesn't use return springs on the slide system and the main gear has a different placement. I'm a little concerned that the k10d and GX-10 may have all of this control integrated as part of the mirror box and not a removable subsystem. I'll continue digging around, I also now have to k10d service manual to view too for further clues.

Edit 2: Well on looking at the K10D service manual it does indeed show the G100 unit and on playing with the slider on my camera, the return springs that I can see are actually underneath the slider in a manner that would be hidden on the web images so this may well be worth investigating. The pentax manual is a lot shorter than the samsung yet gives more photographs of each sub assembly the samsung is good for disassembly/assembly but its exploded views are graphic and not particularly detailed compared to the photos. The G100 seems to have a "reset" position where the slider is held down and a latch clicked while setting the drive gear at at fixed point. This may be worth looking into if I do disassemble it. The samsung manual seems to have no images nor reference to the G100 unit but clearly is identical to the k10d other than the external case shape.

Hi Photoptimist

My worst case scenario was to do exactly as you did and consign it to M42 lenses( if I ever use such ). I'll see if it is repairable but theres little video wise on the net and like yourself I'm surprised that it doesn't happen more frequently. Though from an engineering perspective I'd never expect it to happen as you would design to protect against situations like this as they are likely to happen in real life. Quite depressing and it isn't really a fault of the tubes as they work perfectly in a metal to metal interface, it's the plastic mount that has caused the stuck lever. It's a nice camera and I don't want to give up on it if I can sort it out in a financially viable way.

I have downloaded the GX-10 service manual with exploded views and disassembly instructions but whether you can access/purchase the part is unknown. You'd think it would be an easy fix being a likely failure point. Not a happy chap!

Hi
I have just acquired some extension tubes with all 7 contacts for the KAF mount( marked as pentax on end cap ). I have used these on my GX-10 and K-70 without issue when using any of my DA kit zooms or the DA55-300mm and sigma 17-70mm. All work fine. Unfortunately I also have the so called plastic fantastic DA-50mm and this is where my problem has arisen.

The DA-50 when interfaced with a tube would have a very stiff aperture movement but seemingly only on the shorter tubes. When I looked closely this would show itself before any metal to metal contact of the aperture lever in the lens with that of the tube by slow mating of the tube and lens. It was as if the plastic body of the DA-50 was distorting the frontplate/aperture lever fixing of the tube and causing the tube lever to seize or bind. None of the metal bayonet lenses caused any issues at all.

Unfortunately when testing with the longest tube that had seemed to work ok the problem raised its head again to the extent that the aperture slider in the body of the GX-10 no longer works. The slider will move up and down against its spring by finger movement but does not actuate on shutter or DOF preview. The cog behind the slider can be seen to work rotating each time. I've looked at the k-70 and it works similarly and the cog does not seem to be attached to the slider. Does anyone know if the aperture slider is driven from that cog or by a solenoid that has possibly failed under the stalled/seized aperture. Has anyone had a similar experience with GX-10 or K-10d with a seized lens aperture mechanism, it must happen from time to time. Has anyone repaired such a fault themselves if they have had a problem.

I'm seriously annoyed with myself but more so the plastic bayonet mount which clearly is behaving in a manner that the stiffer( or better toleranced ) metal to metal mountings don't. I feel heart sorry for my GX-10 that was enjoying semi-retirement but still in use and running well turning against the DA-50( I should have just got an A-50 f1.7!). I noticed a thread list john pye as a new repair centre but if it's fixable myself I would look into doing so.

Hope you can chime in with any similar experiences and the resolution or not.

Misc Reflections of an industrial river

Thanks for your replies. One of the limits of the FZ-20 is that it's wide angle is only 35mm so not ideal at times. So my framing was sometimes limited for various reason's( traffic, as in stepping back into :(, or visual obstructions etc ). On the whole the fz-20 was a very good camera for it's versatility but its iso performance above 200 very poor. But Panasonic have gone on to greater things today. My samsung GX-10 was the next big leap in 2007, now in 2019 a newly acquired K-70...... a joy to use. Pentax really do design for photographers I feel, well thought out.

I have a few other reflective images I may post from the same day, they weren't planned, just fortunate on the day as is often the case.

This image was taken with my new at the time FZ-20. Not sure if it's good etiquette to post a non-pentax image but back in 2005 a pentax dslr was rather hard to come by. The reflections on this day were of really high quality and rare to find as most often the wind blows through or the tide itself creates constant movement. Here it is perfectly still calm with the bridge structure reflected in a manner to make it hard to discern the waters surface. A river that into the 70's had zero dissolved oxygen, lifeless from industrial activity, now supporting salmon, otters etc. A positive turn-around but at the expense of a huge shipbuilding industry and it's history.

The FZ-20, which I used only a month ago for fun, was a very good walkaround camera. At the time my colleagues said "A panasonic eh, you should get a canon or nikon, what do Panasonic know about cameras". As an electronics engineer I felt they knew a lot for this next chapter of photography.

Hi

The image below was taken by pure happenstance. It is inside my garage in 2012 whereupon having went to open the roller shutter door I noticed upon the magnolia painted wall the image of my gravel drive, outside wall( bricks visible ) and plant pot. The small gap in the door where the locking bar sits was acting as a camera obscura( you can see the door edge and cobwebs ). This clearly happens when the sun is incident on my outside wall and hence is not an uncommon event simply one I'd not have seen had I not kept the light off as I did that day on entering the garage. Just a lucky coincidence but imagery at it's most basic.

The photograph was taken with a samsung GX-10 and is purely just a record of the interesting optical effect.:)
