Wow! That is awesome and thank you for explaining everything in detail. I was wondering how I would reduce and blur the background and branch so that the macaw would stand out more, plus increase the lighting on the top of the macaw. I'll play around more.

Thank you! I was feeling some loss of confidence on the settings, so it feels good hearing that I was in the right area with my settings. And you're totally right, getting a faster lens comes at a significant investment and after getting the KP and the DA*300mm I'm not prepared to fork out a ton more. Maybe some inexpensive CPL and ND filters for each of my lenses, and MAYBE trading in my two kit lenses for the PLM or something similarly priced, but going to try to just work with what I have for now.
On darktable, there are a few areas for noise and grain but I don't know which to use or what it should look like when adjusted. It is a very powerful program with overwhelming options it feels like but that just means I need to practice and read the user manual. I'm horrendously bad at not reading manuals and just trying to learn by experimenting.
For @MossyRocks - here is the RAW (PEF) download: I hope this is allowed. IMKP0463.PEF - Google Drive |

Agreed, the 55-300mm PLM is much nicer. It's on the list to attain!
I had the iso range set 100-819200 and all my photos kept coming in at 819200 in anything but the brightest light. So I reduced the top range to 12800 as the grain wasn't as bad but still find that even in bright areas the ISO is high. I was working off TAv mode. ---------- Post added 01-24-20 at 01:30 PM ----------
Thank you for the tip on rawtherapee, is it easier to use?
I think where I was standing while taking this photo was a bit darker than other areas of the space. It was all natural light and sometimes beneath a partial tree canopy.
I'll attach the raw file later today.

Thank you for the kind words!
Change the aperture to f4 in darktable? Is that possible? I, too, was wondering how I could lighten the bird a bit more.

My second trip out with my new KP and I'm definitely needing to practice more. ISO at 12800 blew me away but it's quite grainy - tried using ISO 100 and it was pitch black or excessively long shutter. I couldn't figure out how to lower the upper ISO threshold while I was taking pictures, and I didn't want to stand around fiddling with settings while people were trying to look at the birds and plants. It was also my first time shooting in such an environment - indoor gardens with a glass dome roof but with large trees. It was also my first time ever shooting RAW, and my first time doing post processing with Darktable and with RAW.
Tips on settings, how to become accustomed to RAW, and tips for darktable much appreciated.
Thank you!

Compared to my K7 it definitely feels smaller. I attribute that to a smaller "left hand" space left of the lens and left side dials. I change between the medium and large grips, which I think is actually really neat in concept, and I like the ergonomics for your thumb.

I was watching Air Crash Investigations, then gave myself a fear of flying! D'oh!
I subscribe to Grandpa Amu. He's this elderly woodworker who makes AMAZING things like stools from one piece of wood while keeping the pieces all joined, and puzzle toys for his grandson. It's just so peaceful and amazing and a talent I admire but cannot do.

I like Cherry Hill coffee quite a bit. It's local and I know the procurer who travels to various countries to source beans. They only do small batch too which is cool.
My favourite maker is a Le Creuset french press.

I will have to watch a few youtubes on how to use it, but next time I'll check out colour balance. I just downloaded it and played around but was getting confused with the multitude of colour adjustment options. I won't even get started on what one is supposed to do with curves and levels!

Surfing is all year round here with wetsuits but when the surf is that big and fast people will not go out. There's a strong riptide and the waves are just too close to risk going out.
I think the water is around 4-5°C around this time of year and goes up to about 15°C in summer. Still chilly, I won't go in unless its the hottest day.

I will look into it, but what is WRT autofocus? I tried centre-spot AF with other wave shots and on closer look the focus was totally off, much nearer. I'll have to read more and wait for a bright and sunny day to practice more shots. Thank you for the tip!

So far only have had my KP for a couple weeks. The first night I played with it and caught a little monster in our chinese takeout bag, then the ocean pic is from my Christmas vacation to Vancouver Island.
Enjoying learning more about photography with this gorgeous camera! Just got to figure out the autofocus, my mind is just not wrapping around it properly. |

Very nice shot! Wish we could get snow like that where we live. I think we've had a white Christmas 4 times in 35 years.

You should totally do it!
I'm sure the water was cold but luckily we were dry and warm on shore at plus 5C and no wind surprisingly! The roar was deafening, it was so thrilling! Thank you :)
Ok so I tried increasing the saturation... I worry though now I see vignetting. Is this a fault in my DA* 300mm lens or a product of GIMP or contrast processing?

So I tried my hand at upping the contrast, using GIMP. Haven't figured out how to use Darktable as a plugin but increased the contrast using the Color tab -> Auto -> Stretch Contrast HSV function. I didn't like how blue just upping Contrast made the image.
A sad/frustrating thing I noticed looking over more pictures to try and adjust, was that most were out of focus. The focus point was nearer than the big waves I had been aiming at with centre-point AF.

Thank you for the tips! You are correct, it was very grey-day and misty above the ocean. I'll post process those couple pics and see what I get. I wish I had shot RAW, but I had completely forgot about it. Next time for sure!
