Batteries for K100D

I wouldn't drive yourself nuts about "the best" NiMH batteries. I seriously doubt you'll notice a significant difference among any of the better brands as long as they are all high mah. I went to Wal-Mart and bought an 8-pack of Duracell 2650mah AAs for $15. They last a loooong time on a charge. I have around 450 shots on a set right now (many of those w/flash) and they are still showing a full cahrge on the battery indicator of my K100D.

What SD for K100D?

I have heard so many horror stories about cheaper memory cards failing, that I was afraid to try it. I can't imagine being on vacation with 200 irreplaceable photos on a card and having it fail.
I decided to spend a little more and get the Sandisk Ultra II. It reads and writes as fast as the camera (K100D) and it has a proven reliability record. I got it through J&R.com for a good price with a rebate.
As for the size, I only got a 1GB. I don't shoot RAW for now, and with the best quality jpeg it will hold something like 330 photos. That's plenty for now. I'm usually home and transferring the photos to my PC well before my card is anywhere near full. I will probably get a second 1GB before my next vacation.

Huh? Did I miss something in my manual? :hmm:
Where you told that using another lens would void the warranty, or any possible damage caused by another lens would not be covered? There is a big difference. I'd like to know for sure because I plan to buy a Tamron lens soon.

Hurray for AA

The fact that the K100D can use AA batteries was a BIG part of why I chose it too. Had I gotten a camera with a proprietary battery, my very next purchase would have been a second battery pack (for $30-$70 depending on model). Before my K100D arrived, I went to Wal-Mart and got an 8-pack of 2650mah Duracell NiMH rechargeables for $15. I keep one set in the camera and one set fully charged as backup. They last quite a while on a charge and I'm never caught without. Not bad for $15.

I love to support the "little guy" whenever possible. I doesn't always work out that way though. Like when I bought my K100D. The only camera shop I could find that carried it wanted $699 for it (plus tax). I got it on-line from Beach Camera for $587 with free shipping. I couldn't afford to pass up $154 in savings. And Beach Camera even exchanged the camera for another new one when I discovered a problem.

If we aren't talking about a big difference I would much rather do business locally. And I'd rather deal with a smaller independant store than a mega-store. I recently went out shopping for camera bags for my K100D. I wanted to actually see them and try them out for "fit" before buying one. I stopped in to a Ritz Camera store in a mall not far from here. They let me put my camera in several bags, and they even got out a longer telephoto lens for me to put on my camera so I'd know if the bag would work later on. After I decided on the bag I wanted, I could have easily gone home an ordered it on-line and saved about $10. But after they went through the trouble, I wanted to give them the sale. I bought the bag right there.

UPS Rant

Better not go to the bathroom! :p
Just kidding. I know exactly how frustrating that kind of thing can be. I'm one of those people who, when I know I have a package coming I'm like a little kid on Christmas Eve until it arrives. Anything to mess it up is a BIG deal. I usually leave a note on the door and UPS will leave the package on the porch for me. If there is a "signature required" and I know that ahead of time, I will have the item shipped to my office instead. Good luck...I hope it arrives today for you.

Sensor cleaning: Pec-Pads or Sensor Swabs

There has been a new devlopment. I returned the camera for a replacement. Although I'm 99% sure the spot was a simple spec of dust on the sensor, it bothers me that it was there from day one. It also bothers me that it didn't budge when I used the air puffer. Sure, I could order a "wet" cleaning kit and probably get it off. But by the time the cleaning kit would arrive and I'd try it, if it didn't work for some reason, it would be past the grace period to return the camera. Beach Camera was really nice about it. I called and explained the situation. They said, "No problem. Just return it and well ship out a new one."
I know I'm going to get dust on the sensor. I also know that sooner or later I will have to do a "wet" cleaning. I just didn't want to do it on a brand new camera.

Thanks. Yeah, I kinda figured they might be. The cheapest I've seen them is $36 for a box of 12 and they are single-use only! I can get an entire kit with the cleaning solution, the spatula tool, and 100 Peck-Pads for that price.

Belive me, I'm nervous about doing it! I tried using a blower first, but the spec I see in my pictures didn't budge. I cleaned both ends of my lens but that didn't change anything either. From what I've been reading, sooner or later everyone with a DSLR will be doing a "wet" cleaning. I plan to use the Eclipse cleaning solution and either a Pec-Pad or the Sensor Swabs. I'm just not sure which is best. I guess the swabs are probably the best, but I don't want to spend that much if it's not necessary.

I need to order some cleaning supplies from Micro-Tools to clean the sensor on my K100D. I noticed that there are two different ways to do the "wet" method. One way involves wrapping a Pec-Pad around a spatula, and the other way is to buy the single-use Sensor Swabs at $3.00 EACH  . What do you guys use/recommend? Thanks.

Trying to decide on a bag for K100D

Cool!! I like that! I might just have to order one of those. Have you ever seen anything that would work in conjunction with that stap which would hold the camera against your chest while walking or hiking? I don't like how a camera will start to swing as you walk. Thanks for that link!

Trying to decide on a bag for K100D

I keep trying to figure out how I will actually use the camera and bag. For example: Let's say I'm thinking about a bag for hiking so I go out and spend $115 on a combination camera bag/backpack like the Lowepro Rover. When I go on hike, I would imagine that 99% of the time I will want my camera out and ready. I don't know how often it will be packed in the bag. It seems like over-kill to spend that much on a setup that the camera won't be in very often. Maybe I should be looking for the most comfortable way to carry the camera around my neck (out and ready). Anyone know of a better stap system than the standard Pentax strap the camera came with?

Trying to decide on a bag for K100D

This is driving me nuts. I guess I need to decide on how I will use the bag most of the time.
I enjoy hiking and would love to take my camera on day-hikes. For that purpose, it seems like a combination camera bag/backpack would work best. I was thinking something like the Lowepro Rover AWII or the Tamrac Adventure series.
The problem is, those are large and bulky if I'm not hiking but still need a bag for my camera (walking around an amusement park..etc.). For that purpose, it almost seems like a small sling-style bag like the Lowepro Slingshot or Tamrac Velocty series would work nice.
There also seems to be times when a simple toploader worn on a belt would be best.
I don't plan to carry a ton of equipment most of the time....My K100D body with perhaps a Tamron 28-300mm lens attached and the 18-55mm kit lens along for the ride. I guess the logical solution is to buy more than one type of bag, but I'd rather not have to spend that much. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Wow....that K10D sounds great! I just got my K100D two days ago. While the new K10 sounds like it beats it easily, I'm still very glad that I went with the K100D. I'm very new to photography and this is my first DSLR. I didn't want an overly-complicated camera, and price was a big issue for me. From what I've read, the K10D w/lens is going to be around $1000. That's $413 more than I paid. I couldn't afford that, so I'm glad I have my camera to use now.

Tamron 28-300mm new purchase

I'll have to remember that. It will probably be around Christmas before I can get one (I just got the K100D two days ago :D ). This is my first ever DSLR and I've got a lot to learn. I'm also on a tight budget, so this lens looks pretty appealing to me. I'm coming from a super-zoom P&S which had a 12X zoom out to 300mm (film equiv). I really like having that "reach" for sports and wildlife shots. Thanks for the info!

I'm seriously thinking about getting the same lens. If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost you and where did you get it? Nice shots by the way.
