Pentax Product Placement? Spotted in the Wild.

It certainly looks like a Pentax MX in black, but it's missing the 'MX' logo that would be on the right side of the lens AND the depth of field preview lever. Hmmm... Otherwise it's a dead ringer.

So I looked it up, (Hello, Google Images) and it could be an MX or an ME, the only visible difference from the front is the Logo, which is missing. Actually, I thought it might be MY old MX when I noticed the notches on the prism cover! Mine had a hard life, worked great until some time in the '90s, despite actual DENTS in the prism cover and various physical evidences of abuse. I miss it.

What it the image is reversed? There isn't anything on the other side, could be left/right reversed. I guess? Already spent way too much time thinking about this! LOL

15-30 f2.8 weird issue

So, today I'm looking at my K1 with the 15-30 on it, and for some reason just kind of going over the thing... and I noticed that the battery grip is 'ON'. This doesn't turn the camera on, it's subject to the normal power on switch on the camera. It does, however, enable the shutter release on the battery grip. I'm not normally on the battery grip shutter release, but my right pinky finger is in the vicinity. When I was having the weird issue it was just after sunrise and I stepped out on my porch to play with my new toy; it was around 20 degrees F {about -8 C?) and I was wearing pajamas and slippers. Makes you try to get small to avoid the cold, could have affected my grip on the camera. I've never been able to duplicate the error since that one first issue. Most likely, I was inadvertently triggering the shutter release with my freezing little finger.

Conclusion: Operator error. D'oh! :o

Creativity/Ability are in you head.

From the online idiom dictionary: A 13th-century French proverb observed "mauveés ovriers ne trovera ja bon hostill" , ‘bad workmen will never find a good tool’, and variants of this early saying can be found in English until the mid 19th century until the emergence of the modern version. I remember it as "Tis a bad workman that blames his tools".

Bear with me: Moto analogy. In the video link below, a similar controversy resulted in a grudge match. A motocross magazine editor/expert class rider, Warren Johnson, asserted that a Professional motocross rider, Ivan Tedesco, was faster due to his superior equipment. Ivan stated that Warren could ride his pro MX bike, and Ivan would ride an XR650L and still beat him.

The pro bike is a 65 HP beast weighing less that 250 pounds, while the XL650L is a street bike weighing more that 300 pounds with about 45 HP and DOT tires. With equal riders. the street bike wouldn't be in the same ZIP code as the pro bike. If you've got 6 minutes for the video, and if you like motorcycles, just skip to the show, I laugh every time! The pro bike is obviously crazy fast, and the street bike is obviously not! Ivan hams it up using his TURN SIGNALS when he passes and beeping the horn! LOL

If you don't care to watch the vid, what happens is the pro rider on the street bike makes the magazine editor look pretty stupid on the pro nationals bike, lapping much faster on the worst possible bike.

This took more text to convey than I thought, sorry, I do know this is a pentax Photography forum. But I always refer to this video when this subject comes up.

It's not your gear, it's your grey matter.

Very cool, Ginnyfoos! I seriously considered mentioning the helmet thing, but didn't want to be a killjoy. I thought you had used one of those rear axle sidestands, though I didn't see it hiding behind the rear wheel. Great shots, provocative. And very Moto! :D

Thanks, Sergysergy. Yeah, I'm in the 'wait and see' mode. Will see about checking it on the kids cameras, will goof with the air pressure theory, but mostly will take it out shooting some snow pictures today! 8^)

Got it at B&H, and I think I have a couple of weeks left where I could exchange it, but we'll see...

Hawkfan, Howdy. We retired a couple years ago and moved from Phoenix to Payson area. Then we were taken with that same gypsy dream; I have a DP crowding my front yard now, working on the house for this coming summer season, then plan to ditch the permanent home address. The hobbies take a hit; I'm trimming down to photography in one large camera case, and may be able to stuff my dirt bike in the trailer with the car? But everything (else) must go, as they say. LOL

I'm a noob on these forums too, but welcome! There are a bunch of friendly and knowledgeable folks on here, seems like a great place to find answers and just hang out!

Interesting question, one I've wondered about over the years. Sometimes these things are crazy easy to check out; a little data mining and you've got some answers. Other times pertinent data isn't being recorded, and there's no way to find out. Maybe one of the mods would know?

I've been on a number of forums and moderated on one. When I had a question on my Pentax equipment I went looking for a forum. Stumbled onto this one first, and it didn't take much lurking to see that this is one stellar forum with friendly and helpful members. I signed up, posted on the welcome page, posted my question, tried to set up my sig. Have tried the sig thing three times, but you have to be a member more than 3 days. Argh. Makes sense, but argh.

I've been using Pentax equipment since '77. Don't often have questions, but not a photo equipment wizard. I generally know how to do what I want to do photographically, and am somewhat of an enthusiast about the equipment, but am not a great resource on a big forum like this. As some have said, I may be doing a lot more lurking than posting. On the other hand, this seems to be a very friendly forum; this can lead to a good bit of 'hanging out on the forums', a social outlet via computer for like-minded people who share at least the same hobby.

All that blah blah basically says that I'm also curious about how many 'welcome' posters remain after their first question is answered, and can see reasons for some to post up daily, and for others to lurk, while others yet get their answer and disappear for good. The forum seems to be very healthy, booming even, lots of posts, lots of answers, buzzing with activity. It's mind boggling how big discussions can get on a good forum!

And so, I'd like to point out that this is a 'Gee-Whiz' sort of exercise, based simply on curiosity. You never know what you'll learn until you start asking questions.

Wow, what a welcome!! If I had a globe and stuck pins in it for each location represented here, I'd have pins all over it! Scotland (Highlands), Arizona USA, Norway (Wow, what great pix on 500px Troenaas), Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Virginia USA, Florida USA (interior swamplands, about as different as can be from Arizona!!), and Italy. Who doesn't like good cameras? 8^)

I'm only a two day member, so don't have a sig line yet. Just to jump in the world view here, I'm in the mountains of Arizona, just below the Mogollon (Mug-E-Yawn) rim in Star Valley. Not too far from Mikesul, a 1.5 to 2 hour drive if the weather is good. 8^)

Looking forward to a long stay here on Pentaxforus.com; Seems like a stellar website with good moderation and an excellent membership. Every post I've read has been positive, helpful, or welcoming. Not all forums are like that, unfortunately. Peace out, all, and I'll be seeing y'all around the forums from time to time. 8^)

That should be "CIF SHOULD only work with a manual lens...". When you have a malfunction, you have to be very careful with your assumptions. If it was working like it should, we wouldn't be talking about it! :D

I cannot reproduce this behavior either, at this point. Creepy, freaky issue to have in my expensive and ultra cool retirement final camera set-up. Intermittent problems are always the worst.

---------- Post added 12-28-19 at 08:37 AM ----------

Two of the kids have Pentax cameras, so that is a possibility. Good call, could pin the issue to the just the body or just the lens!

I'll put that on my to-do list, although the priority dropped dramatically when the system quit doing it.

That being said, it is always a concern when you have a problem and it goes away but you didn't FIX anything...  It may come back at any point in the future. I'm not real happy unless a root cause is discovered and a solution found. Life has a way of bending that around, though; sometimes it's just not going to happen. Then we say "It was an anomaly" and try to look smart, as if that explains anything...

Ah, this is why I love good forums! (and I'm starting to think this is a really good forum!!)

My first thought was 'good idea, but the lens doesn't get longer/shorter when you zoom like my 28-105 and 150-450 do'. So I got the 15-30, took it off the camera, and had a look-see. It doesn't get longer/shorter, but the internal element cluster DOES move for and aft when you zoom. Putting my fingers over the opening in the lens and zooming it, there is definitely air moving when you zoom. The camera and lens are both weather-proof, so air can't freely escape the system... This theory is standing up so far.

So, given that, why doesn't it do it now? When I was having the issue, it was literally the first 5 or 10 times I zoomed the lens since received. It's a brand new lens, so extremely few cycles on the zoom system. Could it have loosened up, reducing the air pressure difference when I zoom it? I don't have a model for that, but it seems at least plausible. If so, the problem is gone, never to return. But how can we prove it?

If you are reading this and have, or are getting, the 15-30 Pentax lens; please check it out. When you first attach the lens to the camera, turn the camera on and zoom in and out a few times. See if your camera body takes an image without you touching the shutter release, and if it stops doing it later. Then please, PLEASE come back to this forum and tell us what you've found! That could be very telling. Thanks in advance!

And finally, thanks to each contributor! Pre-internet I would have shrugged my shoulders and carried on, trying not to worry about the lens/camera. With the internet I've enjoyed some excellent input and hope to get even more if someone follows up with a report on Their new 15-30 behaviour. Awesome!! :D:D

You guys are on here a LOT! Wow! That's why I love the internet; good forums will get you great information from the knowledgeable members. I hope to contribute something useful at some point! For now I'm all ears, except for the occasional call out for help.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to y'all.

" like the zoom seizing of the diaphragm or something like that which puts my wide zoom out of commission."
Or, not of; should have been " like the zoom seizing OR the diaphragm or something like that which puts my wide zoom out of commission. "
I'm a <5 post guy, don't see an edit function on my post, and can't EVER get a post on a forum without goofing up the spelling of something or another...

But that's a 'by the way' thing; what I'm posting about is the 15-30 on the K1. I posted (above), the snow picked up quite a bit, I grabbed my camera with the 15-30 still on it and took a couple of pix. Since I was on the camera anyway, I zoomed in and out. Faster. As fast as I will on a good lens (which isn't super fast!) and nothing happened. An hour ago if I zoomed quickly the camera spontaneously took a picture. Now it doesn't.

Now I'm REALLY stumped. 8^/
Comments/suggestions welcome. Heck, at this point I'll be happy to get some opinions!! ;-)

So I'm shooting this morning off of the front porch with my new 15-30mm f2.8 Pentax lens on my 2? year old K1, nice snow coming down. When I step out onto the front porch, I think 'Cool, super wide angle, I can get the Christmas lights top and bottom and the snow as well!'. I run the zoom from 30mm to 15 fairly quickly, and the shutter clicks. Hmmm? Zoom back out to 30, then quickly to 15 and k-clunk, another exposure. I do it again, and yes, there is the auto-preview, and another image is saved to the card. Zooming slowly doesn't produce a volunteer image, but if I zoom fairly quickly it takes a picture without my finger on the shutter release.

This isn't the worst thing that's ever happened to me, and I'm not flipping out. If many forum members find the same functionality on their K1/15-30 I'll quit worrying about it, it's something I can easily live with. My concern is that something is loose or out of place in the lens and something bad will happen down the road; like the zoom seizing of the diaphragm or something like that which puts my wide zoom out of commission.

Has anyone else experienced this? Should I return the lens and get another? Or should I just calm down and put the lens to work?

Howdy howdy! New to these forums, have a strange problem? or not with my new 15-30 f2.8 zoom on my K1. Will post in appropriate forum after a thorough search... but presently I can't type in the 'search' box. Sigh... new guy limitation?

First Pentax was an MX in black, had an SMCP 50 f1.7, 24 f2.8??, and the legendary 35-70 f2.8. Later i used Vivitar zooms, 28-200, Motocross/Desert Race use, hard on equipment. Next was an ist-D with the kit lens and a lot of use of my old glass. Now I've retired, went to the K1 and keeping mostly with Pentax lens.

Other hobbies include shooting (firearms), dirt bikes, 4-wheeling. See y'all around the forums! 8^)
