Great find. I particularly like the K1000 SE. I've always found a split image focusing easier than the standard K1000 microprism.

Also with the K1000 SE having the AOCo on the prism it will have been made in Hong Kong.

You say "one of the batteries in the swapped pair". My K70 only has a single
D L190 battery. Can you clarify what batteries you are using.

Lens, Camera, or Neither

As others have said there is definitely a problem, most likely with the lens. I also have a K70 and 16-85 lens and get pin sharp photos without any back/front focussing adjustment.

Print out a A4 lens focus test card, mount square to the camera and take a full frame shot, this will clearly show the out of focus zone.

spotting scope adapter?

I have tried using t2 mounts and also attaching a 50mm lens to the eyepiece of my spotting scope and had no real success. Difficulty in getting the focus distance right and the stability on the tripod resulted in me abandoning using the K70. Instead I bought a phone adaptor and use my Samsung phone camera with great success in getting usuable images as record/identification shots of a bird.
