Buying a Camera From a Hot Climate Region

I live in Hawaii and have seen a range from students bringing in older cameras. Hawaii has micro climates and some people live on the leeward side that has a desert like climate. The dominant trade winds blow out to sea, and a majority of those folks are in Honolulu with air conditioning as well.

The worst are those that live either deep in a rainforest valley or on the windward side where it is cooler with more rainfall and trades winds coming off the ocean or anyone living within a couple blocks from the ocean.

I've lived here for 24 years and have gear older than that in excellent condition, so it's really more about the care taken by the owner than it is the location.

Advice on Taking Portraits with K10D

Have these bodies and lenses in question ever been tested in a somewhat controlled environment?

Until recently I had been getting not-quite sharp pictures of some subjects with my K5 and 60-250. But only occasionally. Finally I took the required hundreds of test photos and determined that the lens was just not autofocusing correctly at some combinations of focal length and subject distance - and that was repeatable. My K5ii - no issues that I could find. The difference was remarkable, although the AF hardware is completely different so maybe not surprising.

With regards to the photos just posted above, I think you have to say something about each one - what it's supposed to illustrate, and what you were trying to focus on. The results don't seem out of context for the situations. Some of the situations are ones where AF is unlikely to do what you want. The last photo is confusing in that nothing seems to be in focus. And it's missing by a lot, beyond traditional focus adjustment ranges of newer bodies (without using debug mode.)

There's no reason why you should not be using f/3.5 or wider unless you are using a lens that is not sharp at that setting.
Your 31mm and 77mm should be VERY VERY sharp at f/3.5.
In fact you should be able to take fantastic portraits at f2 or f/2.8 with those lenses.
Using center point focus should hopefully give you sharp focus on the eyes but as mentioned, if your K10D needs focus calibration, then that would be recommended. If you spend about an hour doing that, it would save you much time later...

The k10d af is not the easiest to use from time to time.
You could do a calibration test with the lens used.
If the lens is mf, I learned to ignore the green points completly. The were not half as precise as me just looking through the view finder.e

Okay, you've got to be having a blast with that setup. How cool! I don't have the 77 or 31, but I do have the 43. Here's a shot I took with it and the K10D a few days ago.
