Shooting at 28mm - which lens to choose

Never too old to learn, right? Thanks!

Maybe Joe8's contribution in this thread gives a clue.

On my KP I started with mainly A-lenses, both primes en zooms. The A24/2.8 has always proofed to be a very versatile lens as did the A28/2.8. For the convenience and speed shooting theatre dance backstage I purchased a DA* 16-50mm/2.8 which I sold to replace it for a Pentax (Tamron) DFA 24-70mm/2.8 to combine it with my K-1.

First impressions give me a better feeling of focus-control from the 24-70 over the 16-50mm, especially shooting in lowlight in MF mode. But after reading this thread, I'm tempted to use my A-serie lenses more on the K-1, see what these will give me.

That is sort of what I tried to give back in the survey Ricoh invited us to, a couple of weeks back.

As pointed out elsewhere in this thread, it’s not just covid which made parts supply a challenge. Today’s challenges the world faces, increased the demand in electronics on top off inflation. EV development, solar- and wind energy strategies and warfare all fish in the same pond of resources in scarce metals for the electronics industries.

I guess development in photography for the consumer- and (semi) professional market simply plays a minor role in that area, but does suffer from the overall increase in prices in that field.

So developing an upgrade of an existing product saves a lot in costs, but needs to be a significant upgrade at the same time to be of interest for existing users to switch to the new product. A challenge for both Ricoh’s R&D and marketing to keep the Pentax brand buzzing.

You’re probably not. I’ld hate my nose putting its mind in my photo shots.

Seriously: I rather have my eye to the viewfinder and my fingers on the dails, while shooting.

It was a Canon user (EOS R) who actually pointed out to me, he missed a touch screen on my K-1, as he was wondering why my K-1 did have so much detail in a misty background on a theatre stage, where his Canon missed out in that area. :D So I was very happy I don't feel the need for a touchscreen.

About the KP. It was my first real digital camera, since stepping in the digital era rather late. My first digital body was a *is DST, followed by a K20D. But ever since I own the KP, I feel I'm shooting photo's again as I did in the analog age. Only recently I picked up a well used, and therefor well prized K-1 (mk i), which in general compares quite similar when it comes to the userinterface. The only thing I had to do was going over my lenses again, and replaced two DA *zoom lenses for FF-zooms. Practically all my primes are compatable with my KP and K-1 and that works quite well for me.

So if your photography goals depend on having a touchscreen that matches your wishes, your choice in Pentax bodies is limited. Or missing out of a touchscreen is a matte of getting used to.:)

Than, ofcourse... All good phone camera's have touchscreen and the better ones can shoot RAW-aswell. So if that suits you... what keeps you away from that? I can only think off the fact that Canon doesn't produce phones (yet).

Pentax delivered great camera’s over the years. Who dares to disagree with that? You and I don’t, at least. After it’s decline in sales, Ricoh had the guts to pick it up and gave Pentax some very positive criticism from press and in reviews online.

But this is the key element in Ricoh’s organization: the lack of communication in where they’ve planned heading to.

With the new half frame film camera, they seem to try out a strategy on more levels at the same time:

- an attempt to get interest from a new generation photography loving phone-users, ready for something different
- keeping the old-school Pentaxian’s sympathy for regenerating interest in the use of film, by being a player on the production and development of new hardware
- regenerating interest by putting a complete new and different product in the field of photography

A daring approach by Ricoh, which may work. And don’t get me wrong, but I really hope it will work for both Pentax and us, Pentaxians.

On the other hand, the marketing strategy towards the today users of DSLRs has barely progressed. Where Canon, Nikon, Fuji and Sony come with ‘news’ updates by mail, on digital platforms and in the paper press media, it stays remarkably silent on the Pentax-front. This is not their core business, but is today’s brand strategy needed to keep up in any field. Even if you don’t have anything real news to tell, make sure you’re still being talked about and let the world know you’re still out there.

In sports, whether it’s athletics or F1, time laps changed over the years. So when sports photographers in the seventies used MF, they may haved dreamed about speedy AFC, but had to deal with their own skills shooting film.

But what happened in the world of wildlife that one would need rapid AFC more than 50 years ago!?! Did cheetahs train to keep away from traveling photographer armies 😀

Colleagues of my shooting dance wonder why I use Pentax, questioning its speed. But when comparing my shots to theirs, I get more contrast in the background of the stage where it’s foggy from fake mist. Besides that - I can shoot 2 stops faster then they do, both in FF.

Therefore I don’t think faster cameras are better by definition to make good photos. To me it’s more a combination of knowing the ability of your gear, reading your subject and the timing when to press the button. And besides that, not to be afraid switching to MF when the circumstances ask you to, instead of holding on to AF.

That said - if I was to shoot video - I would switch to another brand for sure.😉

Well... I do care for what is discontinued, and whether it gives the IQ I'm looking after in my work, or not. Just to keep in mind how rare some lenses have become, with good specs and well judged by its owners. Some discontinued lenses are replaced by better IQ-optics. Which is a good thing ofcourse. But lenses like this DA* 50-135mm have rather nice IQ. This one being discontinued may rise in value in the near future, especially in case it's not replaced by at least an equivalent successor.

Thanks for this indepth view in the Japanese language. It the nuance I missed earlier. ありがとう

For me the grip of both my K-1 an KP (with BG) combined with button layout are key in handling during my shoots. Especially when shooting dance in low light theaters, the K-1 provides me enough speed and sharpness. I know there are way faster cameras on the market for shooting fast movements like dance and sports. But being so used to my cameras and their layout, keeps me from changing brand.

And I was called a pessimist in another thread😀.

As Ricoh/Pentax called out to other brands hoping they would pick up their filmproject, I’m struggling to see the roadmap. I really don’t feel being a stockholder, but it sort of is the same idea investing in your gear - you do want to know whether it’s worth investing in it. I have the idea Ricoh does attempt to listen to their customers, asking for our wishes/interests/planns. Next step would be some transparency on their side what they are up to.

When I read this, "still stock in circulation" this mostly means "last copies available - not to be continued". Like the KP at that time was 'still available, but discontinued, nor continued by a mkII version.

I was more frowning at reading the words "We are pleased to inform you..." as if it is good news the so loved K3 III and other products are discontinued. If there is no follow-up for some of these items, to me it doesn't make sense other then productioncosts made it non-providable to continue.

I may not be a K3 III-user, or in the market for it, but concerned for the overall productline of Pentax DSLR's. The film-project is a pretty expensive gamble to me, which can go either way. If there is no prospect on a new DSLR in the near future, besides what there's left now, I keep my hands tight and hope for the best. I wish Ricoh will eighter announce a K1 mkIII or a K3 follow-up soon.

Problem with lens

The use of cleaningpaper for spectacles is strongly discouraged by both my Pentax-reseller and my optician. These easy-to-use cleaning whipes' paperstructure is simply too ruff for the lenscoatings and may cause tiny scratches.

For cleaning my gear I use a set of non-aggressive Zeiss cleaning spray with dedicated whipes. A bit smelly, but highly effective.

In extreme circumstances - both humid and cold - acclimate your gear isn't only needed before you start shooting. It is well worth the effort to let your gear breath air after usage, leaving your camerabag open and unpack it once being inside again.

In one of your earlier posts you mentioned fungus after touching you lens in the middle of the front glass. Fungus on glass usually is refered to when it is inside the lens. Zoomlenses - especially those which extend - are overall more sensitive for growing fungus, than primes. That sad - I did some cleaning myself on manual A-lenses a couple of years back, all primes. They still function as they should and it didn't come back. My more expensive lenses aren't DIY-material for me. For about €100,- I got an M 300 f4 done by a specialist, some I didn't dare to do myself.

Last year I bought a copy of this lens. Since I recently bought a K-1 next to my KP, I didn't feel much use in keeping this lens. So I replaced it for a 70-200 f4. To be honest - my experience with the 50-135 f2.8 is rather low, compared to my other lenses. I did feel though that this *-lens did a great job in IQ and handling. Compared to the smaller range * 16-50mm 2.8 ID lens the difference was big. Especially in handling focus manually, that latest mentioned was rather short from 2mtr to infinity. This 50-135 though was pretty decent and that improved the IQ overall. Hopefully Pentax/Ricoh have something up their sleave to replace this nice lens. If that should be a limited-version, I'm not so sure.

As a KP-user recently equipped with a K-1 next to it, I do see a significant advantage i shooting low light with FF lenses on a FF-body. Since the last upgrade in DSLRs were two versions of the K-3 III, to me it’s about time a K-1 III will see daylight.

And if Ricoh decides differently, please let it be a KP II with better battery life.

PENTAX Film Photography - A new challange by PENTAX

In my film-era I once owned a Olympus EE2 half frame 35mm camera. Neat from the outside and easy to go around with. But being used to full frame 35mm, I was still too fond of landscape format vs portrait. So you can call it a generation gap, or me being oldfashioned, but when it comes to film I'll probably stick to my ME Super or Program A bodies.

That said, it doesn't mean I want to downplay this whole project at all! On the contrary - if this will help keeping film alive by getting a younger audience interest in film photography, it'll help keeping film affordable for young and old.

Which SD-cards speed read/write for K-1

Thank you all for your input. Especially the first reaction made me wonder why I didn’t take a look there!?! I tried the manual and looked on thenRicoh-Pentax pages… But why not here in the reviews??? 😳

I decided to go for two Lexar 128Gb XC1 160Mb/s. The last number is overkill in theory, but i price only a couple of Euros more.

Until now I only once was confronted with a SD-bug after my KP showed signs of a buffer overload. Then I did have to try to save my images, which succeeded for about 95%. That was with an older type of SD card though, 32Gb.

I expect the K-1 doing a better performance here, hence the bigger build size and battery than the KP. Hope to be right at this point. Only time will tell.

Which SD-cards speed read/write for K-1

After shooting with my KP (first owner) since December 2023, I recently purchased a healthy used K-1 to it.

Since I'm used to shoot in raw, I'll expect to need 128Gb cards. I now have several Lexar 64GBSD-cards, but the specs are dazzling me. 95 MB/s, XC1, U3, V30 (gold series) - how do those figures compare to SD 120MB/s, HC 1, U1, V10 (blue series)?

120MB/s looks faster than 90MB/s but all other figures seem faster!?!

The Gold-series are XC 2, which means an extra set of connector plates on the back of the cards. But I figure that's post K-1 design, so I checked the Silver line instead.

According to the Lexar site, between the blue- and silver series there's a signifacant difference in writingspeed: blue up to 45Mb/s vs. silver 120 Mb/s.

So which other numbers do you reckon I have to look at, before buying 128GB-cards?

Watson D-Li109.... Couldn't find them on Amazon, let alone this side of the ocean. Do they still porduce this battery? Is is it used in other Pentaxes aswell?

Do members here have any suggestions for other aftermarket brand batteries? I've got two Jupio D-Li90 for the batterygrip and an extra Jupio for in the KP, but I'm not really satisfied with the batterylifes of this brand.

Ricoh financial results Q 2023

Point(s) taken. Prioritizing markets, production capabilities, developing follow-ups on existing models (as a survival tactic) and meanwhile developing new lenses and a new camera is a delicate business.

The KP though was and still is a body that closes the cap between the KF on one side, and de K3 iii/K1 ii on the other, being less bulky with its sleek designed body and 2D adjustable backscreen.

That combined with its already outstanding capabilities it could have survived longer on the market with a firmware update once in a while, at least for the market outside Japan, since there is a demand for the model on the western market, looking at the used market price for a decent KP-body. Bodies change from owner within days, rather than weeks on local websites. Shipping them used from Ebay, from Japan to western Europe is less providable due to import taxes. So I feel there still is a cap to fill, that is if(!) that would be of a concern for Ricoh, which it apparently isn’t. An that, to me, is a shame.

I own a KP too, after having started with an istD s, then a K20 and finally added a whole bunch of non digital primes. Stepped up to digital primes, finding myself to add two zooms 1:2.8. The KP stays though and I still don’t get why that model didn’t get a follow up with more battery life, but the KF was launched instead. Maybe Ricoh shouldn’t have ditched the KP from the program before launching a KP successor, as I even hear compliments on the camera quality and on the photos coming from my set, from a big Nikon-fan (who’s now considering slightly towards a Fuji and in the professional business for decades).

The monochrome exercise? I read quite some enthusiastic posts here, but allready see them being offered second hand now. So for a niche market that may have been a succes. I’d rather seen them putting more effort in a KP-like body or speeding up on the full frame side though. But having said that, I have to add the disclaimer it’s just my humble opinion.
