If you look through the view finder and can see through and an object appears the mirror issue mentioned is not relevant.
You can find (similar) manual here (MZ50, MZ.. are similar) Pentax camera instruction manuals, Pentax professional instruction manuals
Seems the camera cannot focus correctly for some reason. Unfortunately the build quality was no longer top notch that moment. I had 2 MZ-5N and a MZ6 with a mirror lock. If it is working, they work great and are fun to use. Minimalistic design, light weight.
Note the film put in can be returned, via a trick so you can use yr film again. Not sure how many shots you made, you can consider to let it develop, so you can see the result and know if you should continue.

I think we al state the same, the first few clicks do not allow other time + aperture to be set. It is 1000 and not 125.

Not sure if it still applies but the first 1,2 exposures after you have opened it for fil loading it only shows 125 and it is seemingly not working. After 2 clicks it the meter will work properly, the defect described is also mentioned in the manual of the camera.

Last year I did had a similar issue with my Pentax ME F after long period of non-usage, a knock or bounce on the back of the camera did help to get it back.

Likely the famous "mirror gear lock". I like many others did had the same issue with a MZ5n/MZ6. It means the mirror does not return in it's natural position. On the forum there are blogs how to repair it, you need to have patience and some gear.
Maybe you did not use yr camera for some time and the lubrication get hard. So the gear motor get jammed.

I bought one 1997, an used it till I got digital Nikon D50 2005, recently i started with film again so staring my mz-5n to my astonishment it failed (infamous mirror lock). since i really liked the camera, I was able to buy one on line for 35 Euro, for the moment only manual focus. It really works nice, so browse on the internet they are still there.
However if you own Mz-7, MZ-10 try to enjoy them with care.

Have 2 Pentax (ME F, MZ-5n) camera's for a long time. But after digital area with a Nikon D50 (stolen) and D90. I want to go back to film the coming weeks. I still have some old lenses, so will keep you informed about my "old" stuff.
Hope to have a nice time in the forum.
