I reviewed the tutorial and I may try this in the future. It looks a little intimidating, and I would have to get some tools. But I will keep this in mind.
Thanks so much for the step by step instructions and your patience with me.

I tried using this method and the firmware shows next to my DCIM folder when the camera is connected to the computer, but the new firmware is not on my Firmware Info/Options once the camera is disconnected from the computer. Just the 1.00 firmware is showing on the camera. ---------- Post added 03-22-20 at 02:59 PM ----------
Update: tried 1 last time - this time, it worked!!!!

I have to order a card reader for my computer.
Thanks for the instructions, now I have to wait for the card reader to arrive in the mail. This may take some time now since this virus has shut the world down.
I'll let you know what happens after I get this done.

Do I need to update the Pentax firmware to 1.06 before completing the 1.10 firmware update?
I tried to follow the instructions in the Updating Procedure from 1.00 to 1.10 but I cannot access the MENU on my camera once it's connected to the computer. The camera is on, but the viewing screen is dark. Maybe I'm doing something wrong...

this picture was taken a few moments ago with the 55-300 mm lens on M mode, the f/stop is 6.3, iso 100, shutter speed 8 at 300mm with a flash.
I don't know if this information will help you or not.

I purchased the K-30 camera new from Adorama in NYC, online. I chose a new camera.. I found the paperwork today and the description of the camera does not indicate it was refurbished. I can only rely on the camera shop's integrity to sell me a new camera for the price I paid.
I took many pictures yesterday with both lenses, with and without the flash. I found in Manual mode the pictures for both lenses were dark unless I used the flash.
I forgot to add in my last post, the 17 pictures I took of the glassware were before the 18-55mm lens and camera started having this problem.
Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

I took 17 pictures of glassware with live view and they were all fine. I turned the camera off and on as needed if I had to make notes and I didn't want to just leave the camera on.

Sorry it's taken me until now to respond.
The 55 - 300 lens is HD Pentax - DA 1:4.5 - 6.3. 55 - 300 mm ED PLM WR RE.
The firmware is Version 1.00.
The 18 - 55mm lens is SMC Pentax - DA 1:3.5 - 5.6 18 - 55mm AL WR.
I took your suggestion and cleaned the contacts on the lens and the camera and tried taking pictures again with the 18 - 55mm lens. I was able to take a few with the viewfinder and live view, but the pictures are dark. I also took pictures with the 55 - 300mm lens right after, and the pictures are great, lots of light.

I purchased a Pentax 55 - 300 mm lens for my K-30 camera and I used this new lens last year for my vacation. I got fabulous pictures and I love this lens.
Today, I needed to take some photos using the lens that came with the camera, an 18 - 55mm lens and I found that the lens would not take photos when I used the viewfinder. I could only get photos with live view. As I continued to try to figure out what the problem is, I found the camera would not take photos with this lens, then the shutter would not release. Then it no longer worked even with live view. It didn't matter what mode I used, still no photo.
I switched back to the 55 - 300mm lens, and the camera works fine.
My question, does my using the 55 - 300mm lens cause the old lens to stop working with the camera?
If I can only use the 55 - 300mm lens, then that's ok. I rarely use the original lens anymore. I just want to understand if I caused the problem or if the camera needs to be repaired.
Thank you.
