Hi,
I saw an email from the site this morning pointing to a survey from Ricoh. So, I filled it out stating that I was interested in (a) a 100 MP 645 body or, better yet (b) a 150 MP 645 body. And with a $10k budget.
Not that I think it'll work, but it is worth a try. ;)

Hi,
Oh, No!
Film is a four letter word!
Fuji is a four letter word!
Fujifilm is eight letters, but made up from two four letter words!
Oh, well. Doesn't matter to me.
Nice shot. :)

Hi,
I always like the shots of this river. Reminds me of the Sacandaga in the Adirondacks in New York. That is, as opposed to the Cape Fear river which passes by the farm here in North Carolina. The rivers here are muddy. Any shot I'd take would look like it was a river of coffee....

Hi,
I chose the A*300 and both TCs. The 1.4x does well, the 2x not so much. Which, has been my experience with several brands of 2x TCs on small format.
My A*300 came with an aftermarket tripod mount, so that makes a difference.

Hi,
Sorry for my delay in responding. That four letter word popped up. Work. :P
I see the pics now in both posts.
They were worth the wait!

Hi,
I am sitting here thinking of another S word.....
Same number of letters. Keep the S. Change the T to an L. Keep the A. Change the two Fs to V and E.
There you have it.
Oh, and get rid of the DER in underpaid while we're at it....

I worked very hard to eliminate these things. Talk about spreading disease. ;)
i figured we (at Ericsson) had pretty much managed that by the time we released the T68. Which, BTW, was the first to sport a camera option. Then we combined the phone and the PDA and, well, we all know where that has gone.
And, now the pay phones are gone.

Hi,
If I were buying today, I'd still go for a MF 50 MP class over a FF 50 MP class. I mostly print at a 5:4 ratio and I have to crop significantly fewer pixels from a 4:3 format than I do a 3:2 format.
Now, when I decided, back in 2020, I opted for a far lower cost used 645D than a used 645Z. Today, the Z is far lower cost than it was then yet the D isn't much lower cost. So, I'd buy the Z.
As it is, I really want a 100 MP MF sensor. Not so much for the greater resolution as the BSI design. And that pretty much means a Fujifilm GFX 100s. But with an adapter for all these Pentax 645 ad 67 lenses I have. A minus is I lose the AF capability for some of my lenses. A plus is I can gain shift from the adapter.
I'd rather see a Pentax 645 with a 100 MP sensor (or, better yet, the 150 MP one) but that doesn't seem like it will happen.

Hi,
I'd jump on a 645Z upgrade with the 100 MP Sony sensor. I'd like to see the physically larger, not quite 645 full frame, 150 MP sensor even more. If I was in the Pentax R&D group, I'd be pushing for both. But, while I am in R&D, it isn't with Pentax. So all I can do is post my thinking. ;)
If anyone from P R&D happens to read this, note the word: Jump. :)
I'd prefer either upgrade over buying a GFX100s.....

Hi,
In the FWIW dept, as a forum member, I read it as Brand Bashing as well.
But, I accept that I mis-read your intention. Which, is all too easy to do with written, as opposed to spoken, words.
Back to the concept of the 645 series, I had thought that we'd have seen at least a 100 MP variant by now. If not a 150 MP variant. Or both. If I were a part of Pentax R&D, that's what I would have pushed for. Both 100 and 150 Sony sensors. I'm in R&D all right, just not with Pentax.
And I'm about ready to buy a 100 MP MF camera. My plan is for second quarter of this year, which is what it has been for a year now.
I'd rather buy a Pentax 100 MP DSLR than another brand 100 MP mirthless and an adapter.....
Ha! Mirthless. That's what autocorrect turned Mirrorless into. :P

Hi,
Right now, 20" on the long side. As in a 16x20" print. But, I want to be able to go up to 44" on the long side, or thereabouts. And so a 100 MP imager gets me to 264 PPI which is Good Enough. The local camera shop has a large format printer. At least I don't have to buy and find space for one of those.
And, I don't want to be getting into the stitching operation if I can help it.
This is all for paper printing. What I have works out for my textile printing for those quilt blocks. That printer is slightly smaller than 11x14" and is as large as I can go there. And, no one wants larger than that anyway. That's a pretty large central block on a quilt.
And, that was the driving force here anyway. That need to print DuPont textile inks onto fine fabric. The paper printing part came along later. Now, the paper prints outsell the textile ones. Just how things go, really. And, I've printed some larger than my Epson P5000 can do. If those sales pick up, I need to do something different.
Of course, that means more trips to shoot all these lighthouses. Sigh. Many hours to get one, and maybe a dozen shots per total. Heck, as I think on it, maybe I don't want to upgrade the camera....Ever! ;)

Hi,
Y'all laugh at the Beaver mimicking power saw idea. But. This is how things get invented.
I recall wanting a camera to go with my cell phone at Ericsson. So, the Communicam was made to attach to the bottom of the T68. And we all know what happened next.... :P
And, then we decided we wanted a PDA as part of the phone. And we all know what happened next.... :P
I won't go into all the 'and then we decided we wanted' when I was with IBM prior to Ericsson, but after a few rounds of that, the entire planet wound up full of computers.... :P
What in heck would follow a Beaver Power Saw?? I shudder to think! :P

Hi,
I already have enough computing power. This is true for medium format where it would not be so for small format of equivalent resolution. This, because I don't fire very many shots on MF whereas I am a lot more prolific with SF. But, then, I don't print large with SF whereas I do with MF. And the framing costs aren't an issue as I sell the MF prints. Someone else pays for the frames. ;) SF not so much as a paper print but on textiles instead, so no frames.
And, it's all money making on this end. As it stands, the 16 MP I have in SF is sufficient for the smaller prints I make from it. Well, some money anyway. Not enough for me to quit my day job, but enough to where I can slowly build a fund to buy new photographic gear.
Now., as to 100 MP, I don't need that so much. But, I desire the improved sensor design over the 50 MP. And, Sony only offers that in the 100 MP and physically larger 150 MP sensors. They never revisited the 50 MP. Now, I can see Pentax upping their game with the 150 MP sensor as they have lenses than can cover that larger area. And, if they so chose, then I'd be looking to buy that. If Pentax opted to Me Too it with the 100 MP, I'm good with that as well.
As it stands right at this moment, it would have to be a Fuji GFX 100s as so many on this board have opted for. I'm standing pat with the old 40 MP Kodak CCD for a while yet. But I am really hesitant to move to the 645Z. Yes, it offers improvements over the 645D but it's still not what it could be with the 100 MP sensor.
And, I am not a fan of upscaling a smaller number of pixels to fit what I want on the printer. I'd prefer to have those pixels at capture. If this wasn't the case, I'd not have bothered with the 645 system in the first place.

Hi,
I understood. And, what Richard is using it for is what I would use it for. :)
I love that spot. It looks a lot like the Sacandaga where it meets the Hudson (and makes the Hudson a much larger stream) in the Adirondacks.

Hi,
I have named the Pentax 100 MP as the 645Y and the 150 MP as the 645X. Just run the alphabet backwards. ;)
And, they could do both. Sony makes both sensors. However, I am having my doubts as well because we have not seen the 645Y.\ and they've had more than enough time.
So, sadly, you may be correct: The Z is the end of the road....

Hi,
Many Fuji cameras with Pentax lenses. And that makes sense as Pentax has no MF body with the 100 MP Sony sensor. And, they have until 2Q 2023 to announce one before I wind up joining that club I think....

Hi,
I usually use a tripod with MF. But, I wouldn't rule out a monopod.
I have hauled a SF camera with a 500/4 on a monopod around road courses (auto racing) since the early 1980s. I do like the monopod for not only holding up the heavy rig, but I carry the setup on my shoulder like a lumberjack does an axe. And then another camera with a normal-ish (35/50/85mm) prime or a zoom lens by the strap on my other shoulder.

Hi,
What a nice loco and car set. I bet it didn't look that good when it was brand-new. Sort of like restored cars. Much better paint and attention to detail. And the old girl looks to be right at home today.
Of course, in addition to other engineering disciplines, I am also a licensed steam engineer. Not for locos, although I could easily learn any one of those, but for steam stationary and traction engines. Low pressure stuff. And, mostly Case brand as they are the most common. I have some shots of such, but SF not MF. I have yet to get into shooting the stuff at antique farm equipment shows with MF. I really ought to get into that habit. Maybe a good use for the monopod, actually.....
