I'm very new to the world of digital photography (My LX is still my go to camera) and I've only recently bought a KP. I do love it and i'd like to post some pictures on this forum. All my pictures are a .DNG format and this forum doesn't accept that format. Any help for a luddite?

Well spoken to Pentax's authorised repairer in the UK and they say the PLM lenses can only be repaired in Japan as they can't really source the parts. Ouch

So ive tried some of the trouble shooting mentioned here. No luck unfortunately. The lense definitely makes a noise when i half press the shutter button. So it is trying to focus. But no joy. Guess i'll need to find someone in the UK to repair it.

Thanks anyway.Very annoying for a lens i dont often use but really comes in handy when I do need it. It finishes off my camera bag as it were.

The lens is definitely communicating with the camera. It says it is in the wrong position when fully retracted and when it extends to the 55mm position it switches from MF to AF-s on the LCD screen. Just when I press the shutter button half way it does nothing. And yes I’ve tried rotating the manual focus ring but nothing changes. Completely at a loss. Will try seeing what distance it’s focussed on later. And when I stated whacked, it’s just a turn of phrase. I am gentle with my lenses

I don’t use this lens that often but I whacked it out of my camera bag the other day and put it on my Pentax KP and it wouldn’t focus. Nothing on AF. When I put the camera on to AF and started spinning the focus wheel again nothing. It just wouldn’t change from the focus setting it was on (blurry). I tried to other lenses on the camera just to make sure it wasn’t that but they both worked perfectly.

It’s not a lens I use often at all. But it’s the first time I’ve ever had a Pentax lens fail on me. Am I doing anything wrong? Any hints or tips. The lens (whilst second hand) has been in my camera bag less than a year.

Extreme cold

So quick update, and I’ll post the photos when I get back to a computer. Both the camera and lens did admirably. Managed about 50 pics and both worked fine. But I was flitting in and out of buildings. It was about -30/-35 degrees C. The only thing that failed was the strap which went rock hard within about 2-3 mins. Very weird.

I’ve only been able to look at the pictures through the screen on the camera. I was surprised at how flat the light was, very little contrast. But that’s not the camera’s fault.

All in all no complaints at all.

I’ve got a KM for day to day fun. The problem I’ve found is that the mirror gets stuck up in the cold (found that out when trundling around New York a few years ago when it was snowing)

Does anyone have any hints/tips/suggestions for extreme cold conditions.

For context I’m a cargo pilot and we do fuel stops between Asia and Europe. On Sunday I will be in a Russian city called Novosibirsk (new siberia). The forecast temperature will be within -35 and -46 degrees centigrade. (-31 to -49 Fahrenheit).

Having kittens about taking my gloves off. But if I do. Will the camera work (KP). Will the lenses work. Any suggestions for these extremes?

Thanks. I was just wondering if dust inside is a sign of the weather seals failing prematurely rather than the affect it’ll have on the pictures if that makes sense. If it wasn’t a WR one I wouldn’t be remotely worried but I know nothing of modern WR lenses so just checking if it’s something to worry about or if completely normal. I waffle on without getting to what I actually mean sometimes

I’m looking at a second hand WR lens. I’ve only ever had A and M series lenses before. In the description there is the following message “ There is an extremely minor amount of dust within the lens.”.

Now dust inside a lens normally really doesn’t bother me in the slightest. However I’m wondering as it is a WR lens this may be something to be concerned about or not in that some of the sealing may be slightly failing. I know it is weather resistant and not weather proof but I thought I’d ask the learned group before exploring this lens further. Unfortunately I’m unable to view the lens before I buy due to the current Coronavirus measures. However I am able to return it if I’m not satisfied.

So thoughts? Dust inside a WR lens no problem at all or a potential risk?

Mea culpa. I’m a bit of a Luddite when it comes to tech my day job has me working with 1980’s computers (I kid you not, there’s still a lot out there) and have only gone In to the modern digital world when my kids thrust an iPad at me. My lenses have been acquired over a very long period (basically when I found one at a car boot sale) and my wife has made me promise that I’ll only buy a new one if I sell an old one. On that note anyone want to buy a HANIMEX 80-200 1:4.5 macro zoom :D

Thanks all. Once this lockdown is done I’ll take the camera out and learn to use it with my lenses. I have 28,50,85,100 and 135mm lenses so it seems I’m quite well stocked in the larger end. Eventually going to have to find a new wide angle (80% of my pictures so far were taken using 28 and 50mm. It’s just the type of photography I like doing), but if I attempted that now my wife would kill me. Been researching the potential of a zoom and the 16-85mm seems attractive or the sigma 17-70. But not for at least another 6 months

Ok. So I thought I understood crop factor. I did not. I’ve swapped the same lenses between my LX and my KP and I now think I do. Something new to learn.

That's exactly it, it just feels wrong (not wrong as in bad, wrong as in i'm just not used to it) the looking through a box really is a great description for it.

Ok thanks, maybe it's my mind playing tricks on me or i'm remembering my film pictures differently and i'm too used to the "numbers" to those and just not used to the angle of view. My first digital camera after years of film, so it just all "feels" different to what i'm used to.

I've just bought myself a Pentax KP (absolute steal so couldn't say no). Up until now I've been using film cameras (Pentax LX and KM yes i know it's 2020 but it's how i got back in photography) and as the lenses (all M and A series primes) were designed for them what i saw was what i got, well what i saw was what i got 2-3 weeks later when i finally got round to developing them.

Now I know about crop factor but I'm finding it a difficult transition to what i'm seeing in my viewfinder to what's actually coming out in the pictures. Is there any way to crop your viewfinder so that what you see is a little closer to what you take or is there a way to uncrop the picture, or is this just something i'm going to have to learn to work around?

I'm sure there will be many helpful hints and tips on these forums about that area but i'm struggling to find the info.
