Is my K3iii faulty - can it really be this noisy?

Nothing wrong with those picures.
After ISO800, there is a visible degradation in image quality, and basically after ISO1600 the degradation is rocketing... There are no miracles.

I take the 16-50 PLM almost every time. It's versatile and while heavy, the stunning IQ make it worth.

Well! I can agree with that!
I go to as many concerts as I can!
As for the video...you have to concentrate just for the "ticking" noise when I push the focus button.. :)

Hello Guys,

I was not mentioning it because my Lens is doing this since new but now that i read this noise related comments i'm curious about that it's normal or not.
I recorded it so you can hear what i mean. Normally the lens is very quiet, but sometimes especially after zoomed in and out, it produces a little but audible noise when pushing the focus button.
It's like something is moving or "clacking" i checked the mentioned element what is loose for some but it seems to be totally good and silent. Only when operating the focus is this noise after zoomed in and out, basically after big elements were moved it produces this noise. I would be happy if you could test your lens regarding this and write down what was the conclusion.

I uploaded my video to youtube, you can see and hear what i mean. Luckily the mic of my phone is very sensitive so it's loud as hell.. :D

Paint wear

I think these, non plastic, painted cameras are all like this. I had a K3 what i got nearly for free it was that cheap (around 100 USD). It looked out like Arnold Scwarzenegger at the ending sequence of any Terminator movie. At first i wanted to repaint it but at the end i wasn't. However...It worked flawlessly.
Before that, i had a K5 which i bought in mint condition. I placed it once on a rock surface very carefully and boom....it got a tiny paint chip from that only.

HD Pentax 16-50mm 2.8 plm vs Sigma 17-50 2.8

I had the old 16-50 SDM and i was very happy with it, but the new PLM version is in a whole different league. The focusing speed is exceptionally fast, quiet and accurate. The picture quality is much better and i can use the Camera for videos with this one too.
I had a QC problem with mine as it has a little dust spectle under the front element out of the box but overally it's so good that i decided no to bother about it and i'm basically in love with this lens. :D

Dust in brand new Pentax HD DA 16-50 PLM

No grey market, it was bought fully legally from the one and only official ricoh dealer here.
Only that i think that it was in stock meant that somebody ordered it and did not bought at the end because of the dust speck. This means that it's out of stock now so not that easy to change which is annoying that it could take weeks.
I don't think it was refurbished as it looked out untouched.
As for the mount problem i noticed with the k3 iii that it's not as tight as the k3 was before. It don't mean that the lens is wobbling, it means that you can rotate it by "force" for around 0.5-1 mm.....i tried my older lens, and the full plastic 50 1.8 is rock solid, the old 16-50 can be rotated by "force", the 50-135 is a little bit easierand i have a sigma which is much easier to "rotate". This new lens is something similar as the sigma. It's sitting tight but you can rotate it a little bit 0.5-1mm easily. If it were an used lens i would not mention any of this.

Basically i can ask for a replacement and if it's not possible then it could be repaired and that's the part what i don't like as they can say that the one dust spect is normal within tolerance and the loose fit is normal too. Maybe it's that the k3 iii has weaker fitting springs as i can not imagine what can be wrong with the lens mount on the lens part itself. Maybe it's slimmer ba 0.1mm or something... :D
Only i tend to expect a totally mint product for this amount of price which i know that not that much in professional circles but it's much for me.

I'll try, although i think it's not that simple here.
What do you think, which one is the biggest concern ? The speck or the little loosey feel on the mount. ?

Hello !

I made some photos about it: 16_50_PLM | Flickr

I observed something additionally. This lens is not fitting that tight like my other lenses. It has a little bit, arond 0 -to 0,5mm play on the mount with a miminum force, so not as tight like the others.

Hi All,

I just got a new Da 16-50 PLM and after unboxing and inspecting it immediately noticed a little spect of dust/hair under the first lens element.
Is it a common thing with new lenses or should i exchange it immediately... ?
Otherwise the lens is working flawlessly. After some initial testing the focus seems to be accurate at the outer focus points too...

Can someone check the accuracy/difference of all AF points in AF-S Select

I had a topic before on the name K3 III AF Adjustment anomalies and i think that the cause of all of this are the different AF Adjustment calibration needed for the outer AF Points and additionally the different calibration needed for the different zoom ranges of the zoom lenses.

So at the end i decided to give up calibrating for the center point. Yes i do the AF calibration for the center point but after that i take quite a few shots with different focus points and in different focus modes and take the one AF Adjustment setting which seems to be the best all rounder.
For example my 16-50 is sharpest on the long end with AF Adjustment value +5, but using overally in all range and especially with the AF auto area mode, it's giving the most satisfactory result with AF Adjustment +4 for most of the pictures.

To be honest with the old K3 i was never using the AF auto area modes while with the K3 III i tend to use it mostly. So calibrating only for the center point is quite useless. Maybe if Pentax could implement AF Adjustment for several AF points individually then we would have a perfect calibration. :D

And to be honest again, it's only pixel peeping as the machine is taking exceptionally good pictures and the focus is generally fast, good and accurate. Only if some are doing AF Adjustment then it's easy to fall in the trap of pixel peeping.

Try out the multi-auto white balance setting. It can fail sometimes but all in one most of the time it gets the balance right.

At first glance i see the k3 iii -s much wider dynamic/color range and much more detailed and smoother color rendering. It's night and day. However if you would like to play a little bit with color, at first i advice to change the white balance to multi-auto and the color profile to Landscape.

If you aim for a low priced one, then go for an used K3. It has flash and a good step from the K5. I had both. The K3 is much faster and the focus is night and day. If money is not an issue then go for a K3 III.

K3 III AF Adjustment anomalies

You're right, bad choice of word on my part. I only wanted to say that if i use the zone modes, then the precisely choosed AF adjustment value what i got when calibrating against the center point, should be lowered to have the best results.

K3 III AF Adjustment anomalies

Hello Guys !

I was a little bit reluctant to make this topic but i'm deep into the woods regarding thins "issue" and would like to hear about your opinion on this topic. The thing is that before this machine with the K3 anf K5 it was an easy choice and a very much convenient way to do the AF Adjusment of my 16-50 and 50-135 lenses. I just calibrated them to be good at their higher ends "50 and 135" at F2.8 with the central focusing point.
Now with the K3 III i noticed that if i calibrate the lenses to their best with the single center point method then after choosing the best, the grouped modes are not giving the sharpest images. I have to confess that for me that calibrating with the single center focus point the sharpest images are almost front focused ones.
Now if i use this method then a way less ideal AF Adjustment setting for example like 0 or +4 instead of +5 or +7 are working way better with the grouped, automatic focusing.

So for example, calibrating with the center point and using that is doing great images all of them with AF Adjusment setting +5 , then using the more intelligent focusing the pictures are way better with AF +4, or even the defauilt 0 setting.

What are your opinion on it ?

Best Regards,
Levente

Silly question about positioning the K3 III in a camera bag.

Thank you for your answers,
.
I have an old Lowepro Nova 3 AW yet, it's quite similar to the Nova 180 AW series, maybe the predecessor of it.

I decided to place the camera in the bag upwards, with the lens downwards. Maybe it's not that stable this way, but i think this is how it should be.

Levente

Dear All,

I just have this beautiful and great machine and i have a silly question about carrying it in a bag.
With earlier cameras i most often used to put the machine in any bag with the lens upside as it seemed to be the most stable and convenient way for carrying the machine with me.
Now this machine has this joystick thing on it which is popping out from the body a little bit. If i put it onto any surface this way then the stick is pushed a little bit and i think it can do a damage on the long term.

I'm curious of your view on this topic......
