MZ-S battery issue

Oh man, i totally forgot to mention in this thread... I ended up just sending the camera back. Figured it was still in the window to return it so felt safer just doing that. A friend of mine got an mz-s recently and let me test his out and yeah, no flash/battery issue as far as i could tell. However, yeah, it really does struggle to focus in subdued light so hmmm, maybe it's just not for me?

Haha, i haven't counted, but maybe around 50-60 in the ikea expedit you see there.

On a side note, i went and looked at a pentax mx yesterday at a camera repair/used camera shop and, at least on the copy that i handled the film advance felt unusually cheap and loose. Ended up getting a spotmatic F since ive always been curious about those guys. Test roll was a bit hit or miss, but i think the next roll i'll just use the ground glass for focus as opposed to the microprism spot and see if that changes anything. I've had good luck with the focus on my Super A, but man, the Spotmatic just has such a nice feel to it. Even the 50 1.4 smc takumar it came with feels nicer than any of my pentax smc-m lenses. The grip on the focus ring is more comfortable and less slippery and it has the perfect amount of dampening. On retrospect, i do wish i would've waited for a black one, sheesh those look really nice hehe.

Yeah, the MX has been intriguing for sure! I wonder if there's a way to loosen up the shutter dial? Fully mechanical and tiny sounds great to me, though i did get one and returned it a while back (almost every shot was OOF so probably just needed to be looked at by a technician). Repair guy out here has a clean black one that i may snatch up!

Ahh great! I'll send them an email and see. I guess if i go that route though, maybe it is easier to just return the item, hmmmm....

Yeah, here's another video of it acting up:

Wonder if it's worth getting looked at by a repair person and talking to the ebay seller about a partial refund, or if it's just time to probably ship back. Hopefully i can find another 5xxxxxx serial with the vertical grip :)

Thanks! I think it did seem to at least for now, get rid of that weird whining sound! However, i took a few shots with flash in succession afterwards and the LCD suddenly read that the batteries are dead lol. I'll go to target today and get some fresh batteries and test again (though the batteries i put in there are new lol)

@andrewd

Yeah, i think i'll probably end up sending it back. Though I would appreciate it if someone with an MZ-S could tell me how the flash recycle is for the built in flash and if it does in fact make those old school whining sounds haha. Also, if it disables the af until the flash is fully recycled? Thanks guys!

Here's a video where you can hear the whining sound. Also, you can see that half way through the flash being in the on position, the flash symbol in the lcd shuts off, and it gives a different exposure

May be time to request a return? I really like the camera otherwise, the compact size, yet tough magnesium alloy exterior, nice ergonomics. The 43 1.9 seems promising too (purchased separately).

Hey guys, just picked up an MZ-S and everything is working great, until i pop up the flash and it reads as a half dead battery, no matter which (new) AA or (rechargeable or lithium) CR2 batteries i pop in. The flash recycles up really slow and makes all kinds of whiny noises like a really old vintage flash, and the af doesnt work at all while it's recycling. Like i said, it seems to work fine without flash, but, I'm someone that actually uses the built in flash, a lot haha. Anyways, any help much appreciated!

Thank you guys for the responses!

Hmm, now i'm curious about the 35mm f2 SMC-A, 35mm f2.8 SMC-M, the k 35 3.5, and the rikenon 35 2.8 (first version). Maybe i should try them all lol.

I'll have to run some tests with the 85 for sure, your photo turned out really nice. Do you remember what aperture you shot it at? I'm wondering if i was shooting it wide open a lot when i should have stopped down to 2.8-4.

Hey Clackers!

I haven't tried a decentering test as of yet...i've owned the lens for years now and it's been sitting collecting dust, but recently wanted to give it another go. I forgot i have the pk to rf adapter for my canon eos r so just snapped a couple pics and noticing that haziness goes away by stopping down just a stop so maybe i'll run a roll through it and make sure to not shoot it wide open heh. Curious how the 2.8 version stacks up at 2.8-4

Hello!

I currently have the 35mm f2 SMC-M and was curious if anyone has compared it's optics vs the 35 f2 SMC-A? Noticed it's REALLY glowy wide open, and curious if the A version would basically be the same? If so, wondering how the 2.8 SMC-M and A compare to it? I also have the SMC-M 85 f2 which is so so, but nowhere near as good as my olympus 85 f2 (though better than my nikon 85 f2 ais). The reviews on that lens are pretty stellar on here so wondering if i got a lemon?

I will say, the 50mm 1.7 SMC-M is just about the sharpest manual slr 50mm i've used! Anyways, in regards to the 35 f2 SMC-M, i may try either the SMC-A options, or if nothing else, some of the older K lenses.... 30 2.8 (though i'd prefer a 35 over 30), the 35 f2, or smaller 35 3.5. Let me know your thoughts, thanks!
