I think I'm going to swipe a random eclipse photo and upload as my own. Not like anyone would notice, they all look about the same anyway. :p

Why use a real camera?

I think that's more to do with lens scratches than anything. Since they don't have lens caps like a camera, you need to get lens protectors similar to screen protectors. I made the mistake of not using one (and replacing as necessary) and didn't realize it until the damage was done. Lesson learned for next time.

Hey, I gotta do something fire related when I'm not able to get my candle fix in the off season! Lol. I had a plan to go spin up some steel wool this winter, but Mother Nature wouldn't cooperate and this was the next best thing.

I did try this at home... On a brick surface and with a couple days worth of snow melt/rain over-saturating the ground, a bucket of emergency water, my first responder trained wife with me and a kid on standby to call 911 if needed. But that's probably a bit overkill, as this is something I've seen demonstrated in high school chemistry. As long as you don't go crazy with using something like a long burning wick or hot burning fuel, it's pretty low risk. You don't want to wear loose clothing either, at least on your arms.

Only thing damaged was some hair on the back of my hand/knuckles, and some dry skin needing moisturizer. Guessing the butane sucks moisture out of your skin.

Interesting remark about how you saw the dragon head too, because that's what my wife saw. I hadn't seen anything at first until she remarked seeing it but didn't actually point it out. When I went back to look, I saw what I outlined and then she pointed out what you're seeing.

Shot these to kick another item from my photography bucket list and because my local club's theme this month is self portraits. I don't consider myself a portrait photographer in the least, so I had to do something extra interesting. Enter soapy water and butane. There's plenty of guides online for it, but it's generally safe due to the low flame temp, quick burn off, and the water creating a barrier on your skin.

In the first photo, it looks like a baby dragon flying up from my hand, breathing its own fire out. In the second, I outlined the dragon shape in case you need help seeing it. In the third photo, I loved the unnaturally wicked shape the shadowing gave my eyebrows as I'm just casually holding a flame. The fourth goes out to fans of Home Improvement. "Howdy ho good neighbor!"

Sometimes it is hard work, and sometimes it is something to take seriously, but that doesn't mean the people doing so are not enjoying themselves. I'm probably one of those middle aged men that you speak of, but those are often times where I feel I'm in my element. Lol

Finding it tough going…

The one major downside with Pentax has traditionally been its lackluster autofocus compared to other brands. That's why I typically shoot burst mode with moving subjects, which gives me a higher chance of successful focus on one. I don't have one to try, but I've heard the K3 III has a vastly improved autofocus.

If I'm out with others and have my camera with me, it's because I want to involve them with my photography. If I'm wanting to work alone, I go alone.

I've found when in public settings, most people are actually rather courteous. When they see me setting up a shot, they either go around behind me, quickly finish crossing in front, or stop and wait without me having to say anything. Though often times I'll wave them on through because I try not to hold others up as well.

Is there any trick for doing longer exposure with shake reduction?

I'm thinking you are simply moving more than the sensor can compensate for. It's a nice tool, but not a miracle worker, especially for longer exposures.

Can you clarify what you mean here? I know of an intentional camera movement (ICM) technique that involves camera rotation around the lens axis, but those are not done free hand. It uses a gimbal on a tripod to pull that off.

That quote, plus your mention of turning the horizon correction off makes me think you are asking about more than shake reduction.

Which is what I've been trying with all the reporting, hiding, and blocking.

Raw vs jpeg

I like to compare this to steaks.

Shooting in RAW is like buying a raw steak. You have to personally prepare and cook it, which gives you the flexibility to make it however you desire. It takes practice perfecting it, but you'll get exactly what you want once you do.

Shooting jpeg is like buying a steak at a restaurant. You can select only a few options at the start, then someone else makes it for you. This takes out a lot of the guesswork and gives mostly consistent results. Even though the final result served to you is usually pretty good, it's still someone else doing the work based on what they, not you, think is proper.

A lot of it comes down to personal preference and whether or not you want to do the work, but shooting in RAW allows the best flexibility if you don't nail the exposure. Getting full sensor data is like being able to trim the fat yourself vs a jpeg where the camera trimmed the fat for you.

These aren't even ads, which are "sponsored" posts. The posts I'm talking about are suggestions and not promotions, and now make up 70+% of my feed. So the tv commercial analogy doesn't fit here.

I report them all for spam. If it's a page, I'll block it. You can't block a group, so I'll opt to hide them. In rare cases it'll keep spamming me from a group I've hidden. In those cases I'll report as spam, but also use the report to admin option until they message me. Then I'll ask them to block me from the group side. They are usually confused at first that I'd ask that. Lol

Did they get bought out by Facebook?

Just kidding, but that's been my problem on FB for over a month now. Social media companies like to show us what they think we want to see, not what we actually want to see.

I use to think that, but I wonder how many of those selling their used equipment are turning around and buying new Pentax gear? I'm willing to bet a sizable number of them are giving up the hobby or moving to other brands, and buying used Pentax gear isn't helping the company as much as we think.

Or let's flip this on it's head. What if you buy someone's used Canikon gear because they decided to switch to Pentax? ;)

Knows what it's worth, but doesn't list an real price.

Wants you to make an offer, but no low balls on his Schrodinger info based lens.

Not for me. If I'm buying used, I'll only shop within my home country (though preferably locally). $700 sounds like a big savings, but not for me when factoring shipping times, unknown sellers, questionable recourse if things go sideways, etc.

And while I get the complaint of not updating, it seems Pentax is already good enough to not need to keep churning out new products every year. Updating for the sake of updating creates a lot of waste as more products are sent through the supply chain and across the user base.

Were they listed as shipped and sold by Amazon? Never had any problems with them directly, but I wouldn't trust the third party sellers. Case in point, there's a graphics card I am kinda interested in and I saw one on sale, listed as new, but at a very substantial price cut. When I looked, it was listed shipped and sold by a third party seller who's company name looked like a string of random characters. I'd fully expect that to contain a box of rocks, or perhaps a broken low tier GPU if I'm lucky.

16-50SDM vs 16-50PLM

Been there, done that with other things, and now in the same boat because I need a good short range sports lens. Even though I could get the SDM much cheaper, I'm holding off until I can afford the PLM version. Otherwise I'd get the SDM and still lust after the PLM.

What resolution monitor do you use?

One downside I found with curved screens is the way light is reflected. If there's a light source behind you, the reflection can be more distracting. Instead of a single point light reflection. It'll make a line across the width of the screen.

This may not be a problem if you don't have lights behind you, but I have a big ceiling light behind me that I can't block or rearrange for, so curved screens are a no go for me.

It's an LG, but several years old and not a current production model. I also opted for an IPS LCD version and will continue to do so with future monitors until something better comes along without the risk of burn in. I may consider a VA LCD panel because my Hisense tv has that and I've been very impressed with its viewing angles. Its local dimming is impressive as well and something I may also consider in a future monitor, but local dimming quality can be hit and miss across brands.

I have a 27" 4k monitor and wouldn't go back to lower resolutions. It allows me to maximize the viewable area in a photo because the editor interface is a natively smaller portion of the screen. If on a lower resolution monitor and scaling the UI down, there's a risk of distorting the text.

I use RAW Therapee, which has some edit functions that only show up in the preview when viewing at 100%. That means another benefit of the smaller UI is I can see a lot more of the image when viewing at 100%. That's helpful because being limited in the viewable area makes it harder to judge the results over the entire photo.

Suggestions on Removing reflections in glass window from a pic

Well I think I was mistaken on Topaz, at least. I tried tinkering last night and I think it was just too large an area to remove properly. In true AI fashion, I kept getting a rather derpy wolf result. Lol. It kinda worked on the legs, but the face was a complete no-go.
