Finding it tough going…

You are quite right
I uploaded a Lego theme I did last year - I really enjoyed it
I’ll probably take the idea further, been buying used lego figures off eBay recently for this very reason
The K5 with 15mm & +4 Close up lens gives me roughly the same look I got using the Lumix LX100 last year. The difference now is that with my newly acquired right angle finder I won’t have to put my chin on the floor to view the image.
Last year I was taking 1000’s of shots every weekend of my son playing football and had been for several years
Absolutely loved it, sadly he changed clubs and the whole dynamic has disappeared
I also did a brief stint of URBEX style photography with a work colleague - that was interesting but dangerous and I could never quite get the image I saw in my minds eye. Unfortunately said colleague has quit so I’m wandering around aimlessly - yet not wanting - actually refusing point blank to take cliche shots. The problem is my head is so full of cliche shots it’s difficult to “see’ in a different vein….if that makes sense.

But… the lone tree, the lone bench, the bicycle, long exposure of water, contrived portraits…arrgh!!!

You’ve raised 3 very good points there BigMack
I’ll take all three on board?

I remember back in the 90’s when I was a student doing a HND in Design (Photography)
I had a idea in my head involving the need for water in the studio
The college wouldn’t allow it, nor would they allow me to use their lighting equipment at home as it was a safety risk
So I booked the day off, went home via a Tip (dump site), picked up a old sink
Got home and cut the sink in two, siliconed a piece of plate glass to the now half sink
Stood it over a bucket in my bedroom
Got my Pentax MX with 28mm lens and close up filter and rubber hood pushed right up to the glass (tripod mounted) for lighting I had only my desk lamp with a 60w bulb, so used that
Pushed T-max to 3200/6400??
Furiously spun the water in the sink then pulled the plug…

After several attempts I was sure I’d captured the whirlpool effect of water going down with the stainless steel sink overflow and plug chain in the background
I developed & printed it at home and went back to college the next day. It still wasn’t quite right as droplets of water were on the inside of the plate glass, so scanned the print retouched then printed out via dye sublimation - remember this was 1995/6, computers and photoshop were very primitive back then.

Fellow students had spent all their afternoon using 5x4 Monorail cameras and expensive bowen’s flash set ups to take pictures of bottles. The theme was “Liquid”
Needless I got top marks and learnt a very valuable lesson too, equipment means little. The ideas are in our heads the camera just records them and it’s surprising just what can be achieved when you really want to.

I’ll see if the picture is on my phone - lol

Gestalt Theory in Photography – FStoppers article

I had vaguely heard of Gestalt but not in the context of photo composition. I can recognise the five "Laws" the article describes, although I would prefer to call them types rather than laws, and I'm sure there are more than five. Another that is often used is what I would call the "echo" in which a main subject is accompanied by a secondary version of itself, usually more distant. This is not the same as his "Law of Similarity" which involves multiple versions of an item of equal status. Cartier-Bresson used the echo composition a few times such as in his photo of the two Mexican harlots, and Monet used it in The Poppy Field near Argenteuil which has a slightly eerie doppelganger feel :

Photo of a purple dahlia after morning rain. The water drops on the petals gave the flower a refreshing magical look.
Enlarge the picture and you will see the very tiny ones on the rims of the petals.

It's very seldom that I'm really happy with my pictures, so the most recent image that I'm really pleased with is from last year in August, during one of my attempts at street photography. I was chasing puddle reflections after rain. A habit of mine is that I don't take multiple quick shots, almost never use burst, but instead I hold my breath and try to take only one decisive shot, which is not so great if I miss. In this case I am happy because I was disciplined to let the man come close enough to have his reflection framed by the leading lines on the ground.

Here is the best of my 2023 Annular Eclipse Photos. This was taken with a Pentax K-70 with a 500MM Tamron 55BB Catadioptric Lens (750 MM Effective Length) with a Thousand Oaks Solar Filter. ISO Set to 100, F8 @ 1/15 of a second. Camera was on a tripod. It was slightly overcast which accounts for the Halo. We were on the eclipse center-line near Kanosh, UT ( 38.760163, -112.555746)

All taken on Fujifilm X-E2.

It handles really nicely. The focus is firm enough for this focal length. It can be a shade difficult to manually focus, but at f/5.6 and above you’ve got practically everything in focus anyway!
It can have some hazy highlights but I’m here for that.
Super out of my comfort zone with such a wide angle (18mm equivalent) but I’m sure I’ll acclimatise!

A study of Steve McCurry's photo book

A couple of years back , I was of lucky to visit Steve McCurry photo exhibition, a collection of large format (as large as 2 to 4 meters tall) back lit pictures photographers over the course of a few decades. The exhibition left an impression on me, it was the inclusion of people in most of his photographs along with context to tell a story.

More recently, I looked again into one of his books ("The Unguarded Moment"). Beside telling a story, I could observe that McCurry's pictures are almost all technically sound.
We notice people, often some characters telling something about the culture of the country they live in, also eyes and gaze that immediately capture our attention as a viewer.

In addition, to showing people like playing a role in the photographs, light is often also used to lead the eye. In a lot of photos, the subject is off center, often including some negative space. Finally, the use of color film that makes colors pop and the scene to come alive.

Over the course of 30 years, the style remains consistent:
- a life's situation
- an original character
- people in action
- a complimentary context (such as people sleeping next to a sleeping Buddha, the fisherman and his fishes)
- a fascinating eye gaze
- some negative space
- interplay of light and shadows
- lots of vivid colors

What changes from the first pictures (~1983) to the last pictures in the book (2008), is image quality. 1983 pictures aren't as detailed and sharp as pictures post 90s (still film), possibly due to using better lenses, but none of this playing a role on the story telling.

Personally I'm not a fan of these filters, but I can understand why some people elect to use them as the myriad of post processing programs out there can leave one catatonic over the sheer number of choices on how their images can look.

So, I set my camera to the new picture style, set my white balance to CTE, and went out and had some fun with it.

Pentax K1 impressions...

My K1 mark 1 arrived couple of days ago.
In the past 8 years i shoot mostly 90% landscape nature photos,i've owned Canon 70d,Canon 6d,Canon EOS R,Nikon d750 and Nikon d7200.
I must be honest,Pentax K1 is the best camera i've ever used and the image quality is amazing...colors,tonal range, dynamic range...exceptional !It is a dream for Landscape photographers and for people who care about true image quality and natural editing photography !
The body itself does not feel big to me at all...its very ergonomic and easy to use,i thought passing from Eos R to Pentax K1 the body will kill me,but not at all...I prefer the K1 body actually.
About the lenses, was big fear for me...but i ended up with second hand Tamron 28-105 (simply amazing cheap, light and very sharp lens) and Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro (again very sharp, cheap and light lens)...could not be more happy than that, they deliver amazing image quality for landscape work if stopped little bit down on this 36 mega pixel sensor.I have plan to buy soon some super wide Irix 15mm or Sigma 12-24...and i am done.

I know its nothing new,but i just wanted to share my thoughts :)

This weekend I was at Ansel Adams exhibition in San Francisco. There were a lot of his famous pictures, but Ansel Adamas is well known to visitors of this forum, so unlikely I can say anything new. In addition to his work there were photos produced by some other professionals. One particular master got my attention: Abelardo Morell. He shoots in various styles, one particular is Tent Camera. This method assumes usage of periscope which is set on top of a small tent. Periscope projects landscape image onto the ground and picture is made with digital camera mounted next to a periscope. Attached is sample of his work. Artifacts form the ground are blended into landscape producing some new effect. If you find it interesting you can read more on his site: Tent Camera. Abelardo Morell
I tried to find out more about the periscope he is using, but looks like he keeps it as his know-how. Does anybody have ideas what kind of periscope lens could be used. Definitely not something one can easily buy.

I just ran a roll of Fuji 100 color film through this old gal and I must say I am rather impressed with the sharpness and color fidelity of the photo's. I purchased this off of eBay for the tidy sum of $51 dollars. I had to clean the lens and clean the shutter blades a bit but other than that it seems to work quite well. This camera is definitely in the top 3 rangefinders of my collection so far. It also came with a nice leather case in surprisingly great condition. The lens is a Schneider Kreuznach 50mm F2.0

K-3 and Five Star 500mm 200 image Gigapan

Not sure if many Pentaxians are into gigapans like I have been for a long time, starting with a Kx, Kr, K-5, and now K-3 mark 1, but recently I coupled my K-3 to an old Five Star 500mm and rigged up a temporary power supply form a car lighter socket to shoot this gigapan. The entire camera, lens and Gigapan were all bought second hand and totalled around US$1000. Lotsa fun for little money! Video about the day's shooting begins in the video below at 43 seconds until about 2min 18 seconds.

31mm Limited for Street?

I will point out the difference between f/1.8 and f/2 is trivial. In terms of resolving power both lenses are on roughly equal footing, and in any case the best examples of street photography aren't centered upon the sharpness of the lenses: sometimes it is about capturing the subject and the ambience of the environment.

Image from Eduardo Asenjo

Street photography isn't a genre for those obsessed with pixel peeping, it is about capturing a narrative in a public environment where there is next to no control over the environment or subject that studio photographers enjoy.
